How do I make a pretty colored purple icing

I have a terrible time making purple icing that stays a pretty purple color. I have tried mixing red and blue but I can never get the right shade. Any suggestions??

I could never get a nice purple by mixing red and blue together.... it always looked gray. Try using wilton's violet. HTH icon_biggrin.gif

When your making purple icing, stir in a few drops of milk. When the icing is made with water, the purple always grays out and get ugly. Milk works every time.

I'd like suggestions about this, too. Wilton's violet is not a very pretty color, either.

Ramacake, I guess you were posting as I was writing! I'll try using milk. Thanks.

I am not a fan of wilton's violet i find it a bit 'grey-y' for me, i just ordered americolour's regal purple after seeing some nice examples of good purple cakes using it
