I find that if I roll my gumpaste really really thin (so that I can see through it a bit to my work surface) then I don't have trouble getting them out.

The trick that worked for me is to THWACK the plastic against the edge of my table. Then the letter just pops right out.

Here's a video that helped me a lot!

really thin, let it dry out 5-10 minutes before starting to cut, thwacking.

Yep, I had to roll mine really thin to get it to come out. I guess next time I try I'll have to try "THWACK" icon_lol.gif

Great advice above, and great link to Aine2's video. I also wanted to add a link to Tonedna's video. Between these two videos, I finally was able to make my Tappits work! http://www.youtube.com/user/tonedna1?blend=2&ob=1#p/u/13/IfuxL2PqoVA

I have both the FMM and JEM cutters and can't say that the twacking works for the JEM ones. They are tiny and each is an individual piece per letter.

The best success I have had with the JEM set is to roll the paste thinly without lifting it off the board the press the cutter a little lighter so that it doesn't lift the letter off. Then use the FMM small cutting wheel to cut around the letter, lift off the excess paste then remove the letters once they have firmed up for a few minutes.

yes, i agree. i tried rolling thinly but the JEM cutters are so small that you cant thwack them!!! i had to use picks to drag the letters out and some get disfigured!!! such a bother for just trying to add words to a cake.

I've found that, in addition to letting the GP or fondant sit for a few minutes before cutting, that all of my cutters work better after a few uses. I guess they have to "season" or something like that LOL. So I just cut a few letters, and if they don't come out right away, keep trying with that same letter. I also tap my cutter onto my cornstarch puff lightly before using the cutter on a letter. The cornstarch can be cleaned up with a little shortening or vodka. HTH.

I have to admit, if you can pull off the technique that Tonedna uses in her video, where the letters stay stuck behind on your cutting surface, that is infinitely easier than trying to thwack 'em out of the cutter. I have only used the Funky Alphabet (large and small) and it's definitely a challenge... but when I've managed to get the gp to stay stuck on my board, the process is so much easier. I am a chicken so I still use the cornstarch too icon_smile.gif.
