Hi, does anyone know where I can get a cake decorating job in Oklahoma? I have been looking around but can't find one. I have 2 years experience in cake decorating and do cakes for family and friends. I would like to work at a cake bakery to gain experience and do what I love. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I really appreciate it, Thanks!

Have you tried working out of your home and advertising for yourself?

I went in for a trial as a cake decorator a few months ago. My advice would be to practice your piping before you go in, because they expect you to be FAST and ACCURATE. I could do the accurate, but not the fast, unfortunately

Aside from that, you can set up job alerts on most of the major job seeking sites. Just set one up so that you get an email when a cake decorating job in your area comes up. I'd probably try to do as many cake decorating courses as you're able to, work on expanding your portfolio, maybe even ask around at places you'd like to work and see if you can do a shift a week work experience.

I think it's really about getting as much experience and expanding your skills wherever possible. You're far more likely to get a job if you've taken the initiative and honed your skills to prove you're serious.

You may want to look around at what cake decorating jobs in your area pay too...most of the ones I've seen around here only want to pay $8.00 an hour. That won't even cover daycare for my kids and gas to get to work so it's not an option for me right now.

Also, when answering job ads on craigslist, if they don't have the business name or a local phone number listed, be very careful about giving them any of your information until you know they're legit.

i wouldn't mind doing a walmart or food pyramid job, but then again i'm just looking for a pre-college job...and i want to be surrounded by cake, i don't care if its crappy cake, i just want to be near it

That really sucks that it's illegal to operate out of your home. I hear all the time about "out of home" cake bakers.

Wow, talk about an infringement on rights.

Some states it is legal to have a cake business from home, some it is not.
And of course There needs to be regulations on anything having to do with food, and that is for the safety of the business owner and the consumer.

Yes I do understand that I can't do it in my home that is why I want to work at a bakery to gain experience and at the same time do something I love. I mostly do cakes for family and friends. My husband is building me a bakery but with the cost of all the commerical equipment it will be some time before it is all completed. Thank you for all the replys and info. I know I will probably not get paid as much but in a way I can gain more skills and see first hand what it is like to actually run and operate a bakery. liz

Yes, I understand about safety and regulations. It's my opinion that an adult person can choose whether or not they would like to buy cakes out of someone who works from their home. I don't think I like the goverment eliminating that possibility for me.
