I have an order for a 2-tier Penn State graduation cake this Saturday, and the customer wants the same style cake and the lion logo on the top tier as in the attached picture. The top tier is 8" round, so not sure I can cut fondant neatly for such small white parts of the design -any ideas? Would run-out royal icing be better? Would the blue bleed? I'm using Satin Ice blue fondant, and maybe have to color it darker, but I don't have the fondant yet to know. If I do a royal icing design, it might not match.

I've read the following tutorial from CakeJournal:

With tons of Christmas orders, I need a foolproof and quick way to accomplish this design. Thanks advance for you help and sharing your experience icon_smile.gif -Kim

Personally- I'd just do the fondant one. Run sugar takes too long to dry.

After you cut out the oval, try popping in the frig for a bit, or let it dry a bit...maybe if it's firmer the details will be easier to cut out.

Another idea if you are interested in a quick fix is to have a edible photo printed for the top. You are gauranteed a crip clean picture and can have it done in like 2 minutes.

I would print the logo on regular paper, cut the white part out, put shortening on the back of the paper and put it on top of white fondant, take a exacto knife clean it very good and putting shortening and cleaning it every little bit you cut you should be fine, make sure that when you remove the paper on top you don't take the fondant out of shape or just leave it with the paper on top over night so it gets a little hard, this will help you when you cut the blue part the white part will be a little hard and it would be easier to handle it, even if brake a little you can glue it with royal icing.

Good luck!
