I have this bride (who isn't even paying for her own cake...a friend is. Not that it matters, but..) she is nagging me to send her pictures of the cake
"so far". She wants too see the cake with buttercream, after it's covered in fondant, the gum paste flowers... pics as I am putting it together.
It's a bit of a hassle- and quite frankly an annoyance!

Have you had brides like this? How do you handle it? Perhaps I should just suck it up and take some pics!

Thanks!

Tell her no.

I mean you could tell her it's x amount per photo but no don't do it.
It opens the door for arm chair quarter backing--she's gonna start critiquing.

She's clearly not comfortable with her friend's offer to provide the cake.

No way.

It's called looking a gift horse in the mouth. Tacky tacky tacky.

I've never had someone ask for it and I will not provide them. That's like asking a factory to take pictures of their manufacturing process .... why? so you can steal my production methods and start your own factory? This is why many factories will give tours but "no cameras allowed".

If she can show me that KFC gives her photos of her chicken order "in progress" and GM gives her photos of building her car "in progress" and Prada gives her photos of making her purse "in progress", then I might think about it.

She's paying for the cake ... not for the "how to" step-by-step photos of how I get it there. THat's considered proprietary information and is company confidential.

I thought is was a truly strange request- wondered if she just learn how to's or something. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being insensitive. Thank you!

I had a client ask that sort of....except they wanted to see me set up the cake at someone else's wedding. I was like...umm no...I can't allow you to come to someone's wedding. sorry dudes.

They didn't book either. WHATEVS!

My opinion is that is a customer request something way out of the ordinary and my initial reaction is shock and the feeling of being hit in the stomach then the answer is no, it is against my policies. If they don't book who cares...those strange requests are 10 times out of 10 from a PITA bride.

wow. that is a weird request. like she is going to have time ON HER WEDDING DAY to check up on you? What if she didn't like how things were going? That would cause her undue stress, not to mention the stress you would be under.

Um, no. There is obviously a trust issue with this bride, and you could tell her you would be happy to email her a picture of the finished product once it arrives at the venue. Then at least she'll know it arrived in one piece. Sheesh.

I agree with the general consensus here: it's proprietary information and takes time away from what you're supposed to be doing, which is making and decorating the cake.

Yeah, I'd tell her I'm not a photographer so I don't do that. If she insisted, I would tell her fine, but she would need to pay my photographer's fee (a good $1k for one day's work).

My first thought is that she might be a scrapbooker and want to have all of her wedding documented including the making of the cake. I know my sister takes pictures of just about everything so she can scrapbook it.

If you don't feel comfortable with doing it then I would just tell her. I am sure she would understand.

When she shows you the pics she got of her gown in progress, she'll get the pics of her cake in progress. Do these brides really think they are the only ppl ever to get married??!

Yes, yes they do. They're the only ones. It's THEIR day. The day may be on the calendar, but they own it. It's THEIRS. <--sarcasm

you should read some of the bride's forums on wedding wire dot com ..... I am freakin' amazed how bent out of shape brides get because their mother's sister's daughter's boyfriend's sister "....picked the same wedding date as mine!" (stomp foot. stick out bottom lip.) And they are actually looking for sympathy because someone DARED to want to get married on the same day as them. I've even seen postings in which the bride is complaining because someone's wedding is in the same month, or it's BEFORE their's ("and I was engaged FIRST!") or even if they are already married and someone gets married on their anniversary! icon_surprised.gif

Yeah ... .they DO think they own that date.

Just tell her that you don't provide pictures along the way.

Someone else on CC had the same problem a few months ago. I just remember reading the thread.

I had request for pics on a cake I was making for a co-worker. She is a major scrap booker. I made pictures of the process of making the flowers, frosting the cake w/buttercream, the fondant, almost step by step. Her mother even requested some with my hand in it doing some of the work... What a pain in the ____ Ever try taking a photo of your own hand ( staged) to look like your doing the work ( left handed ? since I took the photo right handed) ...... I understood why she wanted it ...but never again.... I would forget and and then remember, try to stage it , get a good shot.... make my big hands look decent in the photo...now that wasn't fun. NEVER NEVER AGAIN!

So this is where it starts! "I can't believe my cousin's sister in law is naming her baby the same name as ours", like, huh? Did you copyright it?

So, I called her up an explained, quite nicely, that I don't do that for various reasons. She said "FINE" and hung up the phone.

I then got an email from her explaining that she didn't appreciate me trying to hide my work from her and that there must be something that I didn't know her to know...she's had lots of bad experiences with people before and now she's just so uncomfortable she dosen't even know if she'll be able to eat the cake (remember me saying that her friend is paying for this??)

Anyway, I wrote her back giving her three references and explanied that her very generous friend signed a contract and if she cancels she is out the $350 deposit. We shall see what she replies with icon_smile.gif

I'd also suggest to reiterate that the cancellation must come from the friend and not her.

And make sure she understands that her little tantrum will cost THE FRIEND $350.

I just got off the phone with the bride's friend who started apologizing profusely...and even went as far to say that she feels bad for the fiance, and that he doesn't know what he's getting himself into.

She told me to please continue with the cake and that if it comes down to that she'll just have me set the cake up at her assigned table at the wedding and she and the guests will enjoy it.

hahaha.

I thought the bride must be a scrapbooker when I saw the post yesterday, but reading the rest of it, it sounds like she's just a control freak instead.

Sounds like this Bride isn't going to be happy no matter how beautiful and delicious the cake is. If you didn't have a signed contract, I'd say return the money and cut her loose. I have a feeling this one might be more trouble than it's worth!

What the "H" is wrong with these "brides to be".........I watch that Bridezilla show, and I know its a show..but holy crap......these girls are shameful........I guess too her fiancee should run......I think this girls sister was on an episode of cake boss.........I am sitting here shaking my head.......in disbelief. How absolutely spoiled rotten and selfish.............good luck with that

let me start by saying this chick is whacked and i, too, feel sorry for the groom to be. and the friend is just as whacked for merely being the friend. with that said...

i was watching ace of cakes from last week i think (?) and someone asked them to do step by step pictures (maybe not exactly step by step, but they wanted pictures) and they didn't seem to have a problem with it. they even had "fun" with it and had someone take the pictures for them. it was weird because i had this thread in my mind the whole time. i guess it's all in how you see it *shrugs*.

And what no one outside of their bakery saw was the final cost of that cake. No one knows if CCC charged for that service or not. Duff would be silly not to. Then again, their minimum price is $1000.
