Hi,
Im looking for a guide that tells what all the wilton tips do. Im thinking about getting the master tip set and want to knwo if its worth it?
Do you have a yearbook? If so look in the catolog part of it and it will show you examples of all the tips.
My opinion is instead of buying the big tip sets is to stock up on tips you use alot of. I have many times that come in those that I have never used.
i agree, the large tip set are all specialty tips that are not used often. id get all the rounds, stars and petal tips, these are ones you will use most often.
You may have already done this, but you can go to the Wilton web site and type in tips in the search box. You will get a page that shows the tips and what type of decoration they make.
thanks! I checked out in my year book, and yes, I think Im going to stick to buying them 1 by 1.
I asked a freind who has 1 and she says shes only ever used a few.
So you think I should just get the common ones (stars, round and petal) And then specialty ones as I see fit?
Also I should add that as of now I will basically just be sticking to cupcakes and cookies, for the time being. What tips do you think are essentail for these?
I have tip 1,2,3,4. and 7.... then 1 star and 1 petal
I bought this book from Wilton
Wilton Uses of Decoration Tips Book
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ZFXSM/?tag=cakecentral-20
It's pretty informative. I also made this page to help me:
http://shinymetalobjects.net/cake/wilton_cake_tips.html
It's all the pictures of the tips from Wilton's website I could find.
Maybe I just over complicate things but I've actually used at least half of the tips in the master set at one time or another. I like playing with them, though. Yeah, the rounds and petals are essential and I guess the stars though I don't use those as much. Make sure you get a leaf tip or two if you do flowers much. Leaves are important!
for cookies youll definately need the smaller rounds, perhaps tip 46 or a small basketweave, and the stars for decorated cupcakes, especially 1M for the big swirl.
metria - you cake tip webpage is awesome, i just got a huge collection of tips last night (mostly assorted) and I'm looking at them thinking ????
If you really want to learn what those tips can do, go to Ebay and find "The Wilton Way of Cake Decorating, Volume 3". It's ALL about every tip ever made and all the stuff they can do.
As was said with cookies I'd stick with the smaller rounds. What I would do is next time you are doing cookies or cupcakes, ask your self which tips would help make it go faster. Are you always washing certain tips for different colors or wishing you had another tip #3? Then those are the ones you want more of.
I have most of the rounds with the most repeats in my #3. I do have several of the other sizes though. I have my most repeats in teh 16, 18 and 21 in the stars. I have atleast two of every tip I use, then over 6 of the ones I really use alot.
It is hard for me to tell you exactly which tips to buy because what I may use alot of may not be tips you use alot of. And the point of having multiples is to make decorating faster and easier for you.
A good idea is to buy multiples of the tips you find yourself using most. Round tips, start tips, petal tips, etc. Having 3 or 4 at least of the most used tips makes decorating in multiple colors so much faster. You can prepare bags of different colors all set to go using the same tips. You can buy a plastic tackle box or one of those multiple drawer screw and nail organizers and keep the tips organized in them.
Does anyone know where I could find a comparison of the old master tip set to the new master tip set from Wilton? I have the old set but there seems to be quite a difference between the tips. I'm wondering if I should buy the new set.
