I am doing an "Oz" cake that will be topped with an actual size copy of Dorothy's slippers. (Birthday girl is a real Oz fanatic). The original slippers have red sequins on them. Is there something I can use that is more "sequin like" than sanding sugar? The sequins on the original are flat sequins like you would sew on a dress. Shoes will be red gumpaste. I am using isomalt jewels for the 3 large gems on the bows.

This is an interesting assignment. I have a copy of the spec sheet for the original slippers from MGM. I am even replicating the inside prop label. I have also learned that there was more than one set of slippers and each pair varied somewhat. I never knew shoes were this complicated LOL!

assuming the shoes are already covered in red fondant....what if you rolled out gumpaste (colored red) really thin, ,then punched out small circles the size of the sequins using a pastry tip. then brush them lightly with water (spritzing them might be easier) and apply red sparkle dust to the damp gumpaste. after they dry a bit you can apply them to the shoes. i've used global sugar art's sparkle dust...and it IS super sparkly!! i'm pretty sure it's the same as "disco dust". I'm sure they've got it in red. good luck. cant wait to see pics!

I have done a few small ones, I used disco dust on them. They turned out really nice, but then, the disco dust isn't edible - I think there is some out there that is though.

i just made one and had the shoes red mmf then painted water on them (very light) and dipped them into red crystal sprinkles. shake off the extra sprinkles. I have also seen them made with the red flakes...cannot remember what they are called at this moment. wilton makes it. edible glitter maybe? but start with red shoes then add the red glitter.

the GSA sparkle dust, which is just like disco/twinkle ect dust, is edible...at least the last 4 colors i bought were. if it is not edible, it will inidicate it in the product description.

I've read of making sequis using gealtin sheets and a hole punch. Perhaps cover the shoe in red fondant, apply the sequins, then spray with red shimmer airbrush color
