I plan to make a 3D Thomas the Train cake for the son of a friend of mine. I am using the Wilton's 3D train pan. What kind of cake did you use to make this train? The instructions with the pan said use a poundcake. Is that the only kind of cake to use for making a 3D cake? Thank you for your help in this matter.

I have used a pound cake mix with this pan and I have also used a mixture of one pound cake mix and one regular cake mix. I do have to say though that because this pan stands so tall and narrow, a pound cake will give you more stability if the cake has to travel. I'd think a mixture would work okay if the cake isn't riding in a car.

I made the very same cake 2 weeks ago. I used the box extender recipe which calls for a cake mix, box of instant pudding, 4 eggs, 3/4c oil and water each, 2 tsp vanilla (or other flavor) extract. It filled the pan well and came out perfectly.

I just made my second 3D Thomas the Tank Engine cake this weekend. I have posted a fairly detailed tutorial on the carving and stacking on my blog last time, and took photos of how I iced it yesterday to do a part 2. (Not done yet)
Here is a link:

just type Thomas in the search .box or go to the cakes link in my categories box.
Hope this helps

I used sponge cake for my thomas the tank engine cake..

I carved mine, i didn't use a cake tin. The sponge held up really well and tasted so yummy with strawberry filling..
