I'm going to be doing my first wedding cake in a year, and I was wondering what questions I should ask so i can get a good grasp on what they want?

all the basics

how many servings
are you keeping the top tier
flavor of cake
filling?
design?
time of the wedding and time guests will arrive for reception
where is the reception
what is your budget

Not in this order obviously

Not in that order. The last question should be first. icon_biggrin.gif Or pretty close to top. I have found that asking this right off the bat after servings needed....really cuts down a lot of unnecessary back and forth before getting around to pricing. icon_biggrin.gif

Ditto to what KHalstead said. Ask about the budget and number of guests first. This will help you present the bride with her options. Knowing where the venue is will help in determining if they will accept an outside cake. Good luck.
