Edna, the critique part is I can't get my 'puter to resize, so I'm missing info. I get the gist.

Yesterday, Texas Rose helped me and they are looking better.

I still can't get the center tight so I went back to individual petals.

I'm so frustrated right now, with going back to individual petals; I can tear those off without ruining all the work I did before. I'm treating it like my knitting, the skill will be accomplished but it needs to be put aside so I can look at it with fresh eyes.

Thank you everyone for all your input. Texas Rose, you rocked my world yesterday.

I had lots of fun too, Gomo icon_biggrin.gif

I really think you ought to make up a batch of Nicholas Lodge's gumpaste and give it a try.

Send me your email and maybe later tonight I can send you the photos. I have to go back to work now, but I will do later.

Just to let everyone know, I haven't given up the 5 petal rose.

Unfortunately, I did not put the experiments away properly. The cat (calico) and her cohorts (rottweiler and chihuahua) worked together and ate everything!

Thankfully, they left the wires. Not in their tummies and out of my pocketbook.

I knew the calico loved gumpaste, when wet. It never occurred to me she would turn the dogs on to it. I'm voting, she knocked it off and then they licked it and she ate it! It wouldn't surprise me if she taught them to eat it. Those 3 are thicker than thieves at my house.

Good news they are just all happy campers.

Bad news, I was just getting the hang of it. Stupid stinky butts!

Just thought I would update.

Hope everyone is having a good laugh right now!

Wow those are 3 naughty pets you have. great story. It's a good thing we love our pets icon_biggrin.gif

I've been working on mine too. I think I do best with the center done with the 2 circle cutters like edna shows in her video then the 5 petal cutter with 2 removed, then 5, the 7 as someone suggested.

They look ok but I don't seem to get the big full bloom roses I've seen on cakes. and I am using the biggest cutter.

oh well, I got a new gardenia cutter and I'm off to play with that

Keep us posted icon_lol.gif

Nannie, that's the way I'm getting my centers done.

But please pay attention to the help this thread has given you and me.

Texas_Rose taught me to glue the sides and just press those up together. I would show you the rose I accomplished at her house but it was eaten by a cat. She also turned me on to cutting a paper plate down and putting a hole in it. Gives you the platform so the petals don't all fall down and stick to your fingers.

I'm not kidding, the cat loves gum paste. N. Lodges gum paste, she thinks it was created just for her.

I have been doing the platform thing and it does help

I'll try that trick with the petals.

Hey Gomo, I figured something out yesterday. The last roses I made, I used a 60mm cutter (too impatient to wait for AGS's sale icon_biggrin.gif) for the center petals, 80mm for the next two rows, and then 110mm for the last two rows. It makes a more natural looking rose.

Also, for anyone trying the plate thing, use a styrofoam plate so the petals don't stick. icon_biggrin.gif

Yes TR, beautiful roses.

I had one, because of you. I did not appreciate until the cat ate it.

ok, I've been working on my roses and came to the conclusion that Edna's method works best for me with 2 small adjustments. I do the "toothpick roll" starting on the 3 petal tier to make it look more open and I found a large petal cutter to use on the 7 petal layer.

Below are my test subjects with the light lavender ones the final one.

On five petal cutters you need 2 cutters to finish a flower.
So I would say
JEM 100mm and JEM 110mm

That is a really small cutter, 1 3/26.. Is too small for my taste. For a full rose is best to have 2 cutters close in size.

Edna,

I have to say thanks a BUNCH!!! I was having a problem when I started doing a rose but then watched your videos on youtube and was able to finish it off and be happy with it!!! Please let me know what you think.

Jamie

P.S. Where in the world can I buy a Jem 5 petal cutter? This one done using the one petal at a time technique.

Thanks for the encouragement Edna. This is the one and only thing that I have tried with any kind of cake decorating! Not bad for my first try! I don't think I would have been able to do it without watching you! Now I feel like I can continue on and keep trying other flowers as well. Too bad no one in IL is hiring someone with artistic tallent, that just needs to learn and practic, for cake decorating! icon_biggrin.gif
