5 Petal Rose, Not Right, Help!

That rose is beautiful. The only thing you might want to do is to thin the edges of the petals a bit. you can get a bit of a wave to them that way as well, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this rose.
Do you have a picture at another angle? It's hard to tell what the problem is looking at it like that (sorry!). I know that when I was first doing these, they kept coming out funky and I could not figure out why....turns out I wasn't nesting the bud. The bud of my rose was the same height at the top of the petals instead of buried - once I correct that I had much better luck.
There are many different methods, some have you wrap the bud, then 3 petals, 5 and so on. I like the sandwiched look of roses where one petal overlaps the other and surrounds the bud but it's totally a matter or preferrance (sp?).
I think its beautiful. I agree with cownsj about maybe thinning the edges a little. Otherwise...I think it looks great
The center hole needs to be almost like a pin size..The edges a bit thinner. But you are doing great.
Roses take a lot of practice!..I promise it only gets easier!

I am no expert but I would roll the gumpaste out much thinner, before I even cut it out. I roll it so thin you can actually read something through it.
If you grease the cutter - it makes a "sharper" cut - you don't get the frayed edges nearly as much (and if you turn the cutter over and run your fingers over the edges before you release the gumpaste from the cutter it helps those edges too)
Gomo, we don't live that far from each other, do you want to come over and make roses sometime?
Everyone thank you so much. I would give up if it wasn't for this site.
I get my edges paper thin, but then the thing falls apart on me. So how do I do that?
Edna, first let me say thank you for your videos on you tube. Now how do I get that pinhole? I've used light glue on the bud and the first petal and they still always come out that way. I can do it with a separate petal. Should I be doing that and then start the 5 petal cutter?
I actually do my rosebuds with separate petals because I can get them wafer thin and they look better. It's when I start trying to make the full rose with separate petals that things go awry.
CakeDiva73, right now just getting pictures posted is an issue. Just got the camera, I'm just glad all I have to do is point and shoot. LOL

Maybe it's just me, but I like the look of the frayed edges. I didn't when I first started, but I had so many people tell me it made my roses look more real that I got hooked on the look.

I wanna come!!! How fun to have a cake buddy that is close by.
I personally don't mind the frayed edges either, she was just vague with what she didn't like about the rose, so I thought I would throw that out there.
It really does just take practice.....I have taken classes from several different people (and watched Edna's GREAT videos many times) you just keep plugging away until you get it the way you want it.
Having several different ideas/input sure does help when you are trying to figure something out.
You're doing great! Practice really does make for perfect when working with any kind of gumpaste flower! I agree with what has already been suggested to you.....tighten up the center hold and roll the gumpaste much thinner. Don't forget to show us your next one!
Texas_Rose that's a fab idea. I'll bring my airbrush! We shall PM.
Loucinda, thank you, it never occurred to me to grease the cutters. The last 6 years of my life it never dawned on me to grease the cutters. I don't mind the frayed edges, but I will get grief from family for them. LOL
I would suggest thinning the edges and then bending the edges and forming them in ruffle type shapes. Make each petal slightly different.
Ok Im going to post a really fast tutorial I just did, so forgive the bad photos and the ragedy egdes..I wanted to hurry.

Mission accomplished!
Edna, absolutely fabulous! I'll be a happy camper if just one of mine come out looking that good.
Thank you so much.
Thanks so much Edna-I just got the 5 petal cutters a few days ago and my first two flowers looked a bit lame. I'm totally motivated now to try again - you're a star
