Hi! Ok, I am going to be making sugar cookies in the shape of a hat, and I need them to be iced in black...I have a hard time finding black food coloring, and I was wondering if you guys think it will work if I ice the cookie in white, and then use the wilton's airbrush can to spray it black. Has anyone used the wilton's airbrush before? How does the black look? Any other ideas on how to get it black with out using black food coloring? Maybe cocoa plus red and blue?

Eeek, I don't know, I've never used it. I always get good black royal icing with Americolor. But I'll give you a bump back to the top of the forum.

I'll also give you a bump, but just so you know, there are lots of online supply stores that sell black food coloring. Just google it and they will all come up for you.

Americolor black is beyond terrific!!! I either order mine on-line or get it from the cake supply store if I'm in town (90 miles from where I live!) I wouldn't think the spray would work very well......but then again I haven't tried it either!

Hmmm, i'm not so sure you will be happy with the color in the can results. I bought some of that stuff years ago to try on my cakes and all it did was make a huge mess. It was next to impossible to direct the spray where i wanted it, lots of overspray. Plus i found it really splattered alot. Big disappointment. I dunno if they have changed the product over the last few years but i haven't bought it again after that. I still have three cans in my cabinet practically unused.
I agree with the others americolor super black is wonderful.

Another thumbs up on Americolor Super Black. It does not have the 'taste' that the Wilton does. I mix up my RI with cocoa powder added, then add my black. Don't go as deep in color as you think you need as you let it sit a day or two so it will deepen. I have been able to get a really great black this way.

Have you thought of starting with chocolate and then add black to it? Just a thought.

Satin ice also has a great black fondant that might help.

The black spray can stuff doesn't even spray black it is more like gray and it does not look good at all. I bought some because I was going to spray some fondant with it and was a total waste of money. If anything I would just get the americolor black but if that is not an option because of availablilty I would just go to walmart and get some wilton black gel color in the craft area.

I used, okay, TRIED to use the black airbrush can by Wilton and it's worthless. Yes, it only sprayed out a little and more like a gray color. Not to mention, it smelled horribly! I thought I was going to pass out!

I've made black royal icing, from white, using nothing but Americolor's Super Black. You can not go wrong with this brand! Best part, you don't need much!

Just yesterday I made the True Black MMF recipe posted here in the Recipes section.... Oh My Goodness!!! That stuff is phenomenal! It is incredibly black and it tastes pretty good too!! If you can't find Americolor where you live, try this MMF. Even though it asks for black gel coloring, I'm hoping that the Wilton one will do the trick for you here too icon_smile.gif

HTH!

In the future, Americolor sells Super Black. It comes in a squeeze bottle and is very potent. It's fantastic!

Well, here's the twist- I need it to be kosher. Not all the kosher certifications are good, so I need one that has either a u inside an o, or a k inside an o....complicates things a bit!

The Mickey Mouse cookies in my photos are done with black royal icing, and I used Americolor black to get the colour.

You could email them straight and ask. I'm sure they could better tell you about the certification they have.

My bottle has a K inside the outline of the US. Does that help any?

Check out their website.

There's a Kosher certification letter there.
