I just wanted to get some opinions about the best way to make a sturdy 3-D treasure chest with the lid opened. I'm mostly worried about how to keep the back edge from caving in or slipping off the rest of the cake. I planned to mostly use dowels, unless anyone else has any ideas.

Thanks!!

I made one of these a few years back (in photots). I made the lid out of RKT and put it on a cake board. I used plastic dowels to hold it up. The ones at the back are the same height as the cake. The ones in the front are higher and I used the "treasure" pieces to hide the dowels. I assembled the cake on-site, so I didn't have to worry about the lid moving during transport.
