I currently use a Canon MP620 and an IP3600 and have wonderful success with all my prints and the cartridges are refillable and fairly inexpensive. Patty if you tell me what problems your having, maybe I can help you resolve them.

PhotoFrost, thanks for the offer of help but my ink head keeps burning out and has to be replaced at $50 a head. (I have a warranty so so far, no cost to me) The repair guy said this is common with edible inks. Also, there is no way to reset the chips on the cartridges so even if you refill them, which I do, the printer won't recognize the full cartridge. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am glad that it does not cost you anything at this point, but there are methods for cleaning the print head that can save the life of it. There are also methods and Edible Inks that can help prevent it as well. I will be happy to offer all the knowledge that I have. The cartridges that I use are refillable, although I do not recommend refilling more than 3x and they always recognize, yes this means no print count on the cartridge that makes the cartridge unuseable.
There has been new technology that has been released that makes this industry even more profitable for all of us that are doing prints for customers. Ask any questions you might have and I will be glad to help. Even with these new cartridges it sometimes pays to have a cleaning set of cartridges that can replace your ink cartridges between those long times when you are not doing any printing. you can't switch back and forth from edible ink to regular ink. Once you use regular ink, you should never print again with edible ink.

Before I changed the ink cartridges I started noticing streaks in my printed pictures that I didn't have before. I thought with the Canons you did not have to do the cleaning. Also, I don't have orders on a regular basis and hadn't printed weekly or monthly. Could this be the problem? I now better understand the cleaning process through the maintenance screen and the deep cleaning, which still did not work. I rinsed the printer head out with warm water, that gave a little relief. Do I now have to shell out $50 for a new print head or should I invest in the nontoxic cleaner?

The cartridges that you would need for that are the CLI-221 Colors and CLI-220 Black. Those cartridges are available in Edible Ink as well. Pattycakes is correct in that you can not switch back and forth from regular ink and edible ink. I am not sure whom you get your edible ink from but one nice thing that I do is not only use my printer for printing out my EI but I also use it to print out my daily paperwork. Since it looks and dries like regular ink, I use it to print out invoices, paperwork and whatever. The only thing I do not do is print out photographs with it.

Cleaning and maintenance is always a good thing no matter what the printer. If you are going a long time between printing then the best thing is to either use a set of cleaner cartridges between prints or remove the inks and store them in a ziploc bag, then remove the print head and thoroughly clean it and store it in a ziploc bag as well. There is a good chance you can still save your print head. I have to find a link, but there is a good video on the cleaning of the print head that I can give you. Once I find it I will post it here.
Thanks PhotoFrost, I'm going to buy the ink cartridges now. I have been waiting awhile to use the printer. I thought that if I just bought a extra print head that I could change them out when printing on reg paper, I didn't know that I could just use the edible ink to do my every day printing. My printer is Canon IP3500 and the cleaning cart number is CC-3-ab. They assure me this is the correct one but it doesn't do anything. I still have to "baby" the printer every time I use it and the color is still not the best! I have refilled the cart. also. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

There are differences between different companies and their inks. I would recommend trying a different brand of Edible Ink and see how it goes. These are the ones I have, and although they are not listed you can call in and ask for the matching cleaner cartridges. I get the most vibrant colors from these and the cleaners seem to almost always do the job.

Many times I just use it with the backing sheet which kind of defeats the purpose of using edible sheets!!!!
Try popping it in the freezer for a few min in the plastic bag and it will pop right off the backing!

I have had that happen once before and after I examined the pack of sheets I discovered they were passed the exp date! So you might check that out!
I would not go for the candle idea, but I have heard of people using a blow dryer passing it back and forth over the sheet for a minute or two. This was usually do to high humidity conditions though that they were sticking to the backing page.
I personally love my Canon printers. I do not care for the Epson printers, but I think you will find there is a mixed review of which people prefer. When it comes to Edible prints though, you have to remember it is not always the printer that is the problem as much as it is the quality of the Edible Ink your using and the quality of the Icing Sheet. All the printer does is print it

There are several different types of icing sheets out there. What brand are you using and what is the humidity level like where you are? Do you have this problem if you pull an icing sheet out prior to printing?

.The good thing is I already ordered another batch though a different brand from the one I had before. Well I am so glad that was the solution! I think the sheets I had that were out of date I had picked up at the Sams bakery and they were a different brand than I had been using! I really hate to waste even one because of the expense. Also, about the humidity---that will really mess you up too. I have an attic fan and use it like between seasons and I thought I had ruined my printer because the sheet just started to "gum-up" the printer instead of printing my image but I finally got it all cleaned out! Can't wait to get me a new set of cartridges to see if my color improves!
Both Epson or Canon Printer will printing good quality edible image. As long as you know how to handle your printer then you won't have any trouble with clogging issue.
I know first hand all edible ink is not the same. In fact...I was the insane gal a couple years back at convention that HUGGED the PHOTOFROST people!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL I used KK for years and had issues time and time again. Ever since using PF inks...well, my life is a bit easier printing those edible images Before PF, I would stess everytime I needed one. Sometimes it would take me an hour to get it to work.
