I used a fondant/GP blend. I stacked three 6" styrofoam disks, covered them in plastic wrap and greased them with Crisco. I layed that on its side. I rolled out the fondant/gumpaste mixture (didn't have an extruder) and arranged the rolls on the form. I wet the mixture wherever it touched to "glue" it together. It ended up very sturdy. I picked it up lots of times and carried it around before it actually ended up on the cake.

It's on the first cake in my pix.

Good luck.

i've tried it 3 times on parchment came off much better, used 3 to 4 layer's of royal but they all ended up breaking, i'm going to use fondant or 50/50 next time

Make them out of gumpaste!! Lots easier to do, and not nearly as fragile. I use the same templates, and wax paper - just use gumpaste made into tiny snakes to make the tiara.

Here is a pic of the last one I have made:

If you have any questions about it, just ask!

I am planning on making one for my daughter for her 3rd birthday. I've tried once with RI, it worked, but I was practicing, so it wasn't that neat. I would love to try it with gumpaste, but I think my design (in my pics) is a little too detailed for gumpaste. I might give it a try though, it might be worth it.

I used Antonia74's royal icing, and I didn't thin it out. Next time I think I might thin it just a little and I may also color it, so that I don't have to try to color parts of it after the fact. I may also try to use a bottle rather than bag and tip.

The one thing I did figure out is that if it is RI then it will need to be pretty thick so that it doesn't shatter. Mine was actually so heavy that the parchment fell off the pitcher that I had it on. I left it alone, but didn't realize that it had completly cracked. Tried to pick it up later and it shattered in my hand. Probably wouldn't have happened if it hadn't fallen off it's mold.
