So I reach in the cabinet for my sugar and I see a tail hanging out. I have two boys and they have these stupid plastic snakes they play with and as I start yelling for my youngest to come get his snake out of my kitchen I grab it to hand to him and realize it is no toy !!!!
It is a 1 1/2 foot "garden" snake.
Thank goodness DH was home !! I hate snakes !!!!!!
I called a local pest control company to see how it would have gotten in and they told me it is common to find snakes inside and just like a mouse or anything else they can get in pretty much anywhere. Great !! I'll never be able to reach in another cabinet or sleep again !!!
How horrifying. The only thing worse would be to accidentally pick up a spider.
Ugh... at least it wasn't in a cakebox. That may have scarred me for life. 
I was walking up our front sidewalk a week ago and heard a rustling in our flowerbed. It was just a garden snake but totally creeped me out!! We've been in this house for 15 years and that was my first snake sighting - hope I don't see another one for at least that long!!
Yep I would have passed out, those and worms are the only 2 things in life that scare me enough that I don't think about a reaction and I would run across a traffic filled road just to get away from it.

I AM PETRIFIED OF SNAKES I PROBABLY WOULD OF HAD A HEART ATTACK AND DIED. LOL I WOULDN'T PROBABLY EVER GO IN THE CUPBOARD AGAIN.

Do you live in the country. I grew up in central alabama close to a river, and swamp land so i ran up un a few reptiles in the past. The pest man was right pests will come into a house for food, warmth, shelter, ect. Normally in the counrty the worst times are in the winter. You may want to familiarize your self with the different types of snakes in your area. If indeed you come across a poisonous the worst thing you can do is to panic. Identify the snake and proceed accordingly. I would suggest keeping a gradening hoe close by just incase your DH isn't home. I have used this before to pin down or kill snakes before. A level head is your best defence.

OH, I definately would have died I am scared to death of snakes! I almost picked up one of those garden snakes while cleaning up sticks in the back yard. I screamed and ran in the house. Then I googled garden snakes to make sure that's what I saw and when the pic came up I screamed and jumped away from my computer.. 
I know that they are harmless, but they creep me out! I have a friend in W.V. and she uses moth balls around the perimeter of her yard and garage to keep the snakes out. I don't know if it works, she says she hasn't many since she started using moth balls.

I used to live in the country, and have had a few run ins with snakes, never in the house, once at work in the filing area. I am not afraid of snakes, but bats are a different story. 
We had several bats in the house this summer, had to have the pest guys come out, seal up the house, put tubes in so they could get out, if there were any left. You have to leave the tubes in place for a month, then they come back and take them out..cost us a pretty penny, but no more bats 
Funny how diffrent things creep us out. Snakes are cool, rats I've had as pets, bats are sooo soft and amazing creatures...
But SPIDERS!!!!!!!!! My hands get shaky just typing the word!!!!

I can tolerate just about anything with four legs or less, except bats! We had one in our house last summer and that totally freaked me out!!! I'll have to admit though grabbing a real snake when I thought it was a fake one, would probably put me into orbit. I'm so sorry that happend to you 
My sister used to live in Suburban New Jersey...really, not coutry at all. She had a small parrot that had a cage, but actually lived on top of it. The cage was left open and he could roam the apartment as he pleased. She came home and found him in the cage rocking back and forth and looking wierd. She then realized that there was a bat in the apartment terrorizing the bird. She called a neighbor who chased the bat out the window with a broom....again I live in NYC...unlikely that i'll see a bat (although, in central park, I'm sure they are there).
Awwww! I'm sorry to hear the snake scared you half to death! I love snakes, I would've come to help you. Before I was into baking, I was a reptile collector. Among them were lots of snakes, boas, pythons, vipers, even a cobra who (believe it or not!) actually liked me! He'd never flare if I approached him (in fact, we used to go nose-to-nose through the glass); but if DH came in the room, he'd back up in his tank and show his full hood. My albino burmese python, Bogart, was 12 feet long, and he and I used to watch tv on the floor together. He'd just lay right next to me. And my ball python, Coco, would go through all of my belt loops and just hang around my waist.
Now, show me a little spider or water bug?

My mom had a litter of kittens in her kitchen one time and when she walked in she saw the mama cat hissing and standing up with all the babies behind her. At first she couldn't see why, then she saw this very large snake coiled up in the corner. The cat kept it there and she called animal control and they came and got it. It was about 6 feet long.
I thought it was cool to hear that my cat was protecting her babies, but dang what if something happened.
badkitty, JUST saw your post!!! (Ha-ha!!!) I like bats, too. Got two outside that sleep up against the foundation of our walk-out basement. I've affectionately named them Fuzzy & Wuzzy. They've been here a couple years. We put a bat box out in the yard, but the only thing we ever got in there was a hornets nest!

I've tried the bat box too...just got spiders (shudder) and yellowjackets! Darn! Fuzzy & Wuzzy, that's cute!
But I have to admit, I've grabbed snakes when I thought they were sticks or dead...and had them move...and I did a little moving myself 
I was born and rasied up in the northern part of Ohio, but when I move here (Ky.) I learn real fast that I was going to be sharing my yard with copperheads, rattle snakes, black snakes.
Once the kids and I were getting ready to leave and as soon as I open the back door, there was a copperhead. Before I could get the door shut our dog got between it and us just has the snake was striking. Sad to say our dog got bite, but happy to say he ended up being o.k., his head swell so big.
I was never so thankful for a dog as I was at that time, he save one of my children from getting bite. From that point on, I am the 1st. one out the door, I check all around the porch and also the steps...before I let any child out the door. I find myself being worried the worst about snakes when it comes to my grandbabies.
Whats so funny both my children before they had their children, kept boas & pythons, big ones at that. Use to scare me to death when I went to their houses

Moth balls will keep them away from your house. I have a lake behind my house and I see all kinds of things. I throw a few boxes out as the seasons change. Lime and sulphur will definitely run them as well, but I hate the smell If you start seeing other types you may want to put a little something around the house.
I live on a small pond in Florida and every once in awhile I come across a black racer (harmless) on my front porch or back deck. Still freaks me out!! I have a bullmastiff and two chinese crested dogs (no, their tongues don't hang out yet), so far they haven't come nose to nose with any snakes, I'm not sure what they would do.

Have you looked at any church steeples at dusk lately? They're all over the city, you just have to look in the right places.
We had a bat buzzing around a couple of times over the years - the easiest way for us to get rid of them was to close all the doors except the one going outside, turn on all the lights so they're blinded, and guide them toward the door with a broom. As soon as they got back into the dark, they flew off.
I'm not afraid of snakes. They're not slimy, they actually feel like new leather. I won't own one, but I would hold someone else's.

Oh grannys3angels, I'm so sorry your pup got bit! But what a hero he is for protecting his family!!! And I am glad to hear he came through it okay, too!
... I've been bitten by one of the "baby" pythons (thankfully it was the little nonvenomous one!). Nevertheless... Eeeeeeeeouch!!!! I think the worst part was having DH prying Mellow Yellow off and then pulling all the little teeth out of my skin. Before that it was just the shock of getting bit and seeing him wrapped & coiled around my arm, which really didn't hurt so much believe it or not.
Tarantula. OUTSIDE MY BEDROOM DOOR. How I didn't scream bloody murder, I still don't know - I think my vocal cords just froze . These (and other rather horrifying creatures that grow to mammoth size) are the things no one tells you about before you move to the tropics...think about that this winter when you have 2 feet of snow on the ground and you're dreaming of an island getaway
