Finally The Details About Jackie & Heath's 8.5 Foot Cake

Hi all CCers,
I hope you all feel that late is better than never. I must apologize for my tardy reply to all your questions.
So, I'm Leanne and I made Jackie & Heath's cake. It was an awesome one of a kind cake experience and Jackie & Heath are two of the warmest caring people in the world.
There was laughter, there were tears, there was sweat (not on the cake thought), and then more laughter!
Here is the breakdown:
The cake was 8.5 feet high on top of the table so it actually stretched to almost 13 feet in the air. Good thing the ceiling was like 50 feet.
it was a total of 840 servings of cake, yes cake!
there was chocolate cake with raspberry preserve & raspberry mousse filling
chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling
vanilla cake with raspberry preserve & raspberry mousse filling
and vanilla cake with chocolate ganache filling
there were more than 2000 gum paste flowers painted in Jackie's color kit from global sugar art, I'll have to go back and check to see the exact colors, but I think it was... champagne, amethyst, avocado, and garnet luster dusts.
each tier was covered in fondant, then dry stenciled with the damask stencil set from designer stencils in amethyst luster dust. then I airbrushed the whole cake with a gold/pearl sheen.
the stand was built by Jackie's step father who is a super engineer. that stand was rock solid! Sorry I probably can't answer questions about the stand except to say it was wood, metal, and plastic and came apart in lots of pieces.
each "spacer" between the cakes was a foam dummy that the flowers were stuck into. This part took the most time of the whole cake project.
ummm, sorry if I forgot to answer any of your questions. I will watch this post and answer any questions I have missed, so ask away!
it took my three weeks to make this cake and I would do it all again. In my gallery are two pictures of us setting the cake up, you can see we had to stand on the table and even get on a chair on top of the table.
Thank you to everyone for your kind comments about the cake, I love Cake Central!

Leanne, you did an absolutely wonderful job on this cake. My mouth was hanging open when I first saw it. It is truly unlike any other wedding cake I've ever seen. The number of flowers you guys did was amazing. The cake looked so elegant and romantic.
Thanks for sharing how you did it. What fun it must have been to be a part of this....stressful I know, but fun!
honestly, I had so much time dedicated to this one project it was a nice break from the usual stress of doing multiple cake orders.
we had "rehearsed" the set up of the stand and had lots of setup time so it was my least stressful delivery yet.
Oy! Did they have that many guests? How much cake was left over?
no, there were not 800 guests. I don't have the guest count exactly but it was under 200.
the leftovers went home with family and while they were still fresh enough to eat they were enjoyed by out of town guests and served at a luncheon for Jackie and Heath before they went on their honeymoon.
I don't know what happened with the "too old to eat" cake. I'm sure it looked pretty in someones compost bin.

LOL what a lucky compost bin. Congratulations, that cake was an amazing job!
Thank you so much for posting, it certainly was AMAZING! I had so many questions and they are all answered now!
What an amazzzzzing feat!! Beautiful!! ... and I certainly hope that delicious cake didn't end up in a compost bin!! Maybe it was taken to a shelter or nursing home! Not a single crumb of that awesome cake should have been wasted!
May sound dumb, but how do you serve/cut a cake 13 feet in the air?
Not dumb at all, actually this is one of the most common questions I get.
at the wedding only the bottom two tiers were sliced, they were at normal height and the banquet captain didn't even look fazed about having to serve an 8 foot high cake. He was so professional. I bet if I told him he had to do it on a ladder he would have done it well.
