I tried to search and nothing came up in forums...so here goes. We're trying to model a little panda out of store bought rice kr. treats and cover it with fondant. My daughter finds that the fondant is ripping when she is trying to cover it, and we can see all the nooks and crannies of the rice krispy treats.

Any tips on getting it smoother? Do you ice the RKT form? I think her fondant is rolled too thin. We're using marshmallow fondant.

Thanks,
Kelly

The few that I have done, I've got them as smooth as I could, iced with regular icing, let it set for a while to get firmed up and a good crust....I used Satin Ice, found that a little thicker than usual is better I still got a few nooks and crannies. Hope this helps some....

I did my spongebob in RKT. I did ice it first. If you get some cracking rub a little buttercream or shortening in the cracks to smooth it out.

Use modeling chocolate under the fondant.

Really squeeze those RKT's....as hard as you can. That will eliminate a lot. You can always smooth with a sharp knife. I usually throw on a little buttercream and make the fondant thicker, as stated before.

Some possible suggestions:

1. Crush rice krispies before making theRKT (some use a food processor for this or roll with rolling pin)

2. Cover RKT with the either of the following before covering with fondant:
bc, ri, chocolate, ganache, shortening

3. Roll fondant thicker

4. Put on 2 layers of fondant

5. Do as JodieF suggested

I did a search here are just some of the threads I found on the topic:

Xstitcher got it all covered.

I prefer to cover the cake with 2 layers of fondant.

xstitcher, thanks. I don't know why searching doesn't work for me most of the time.

Your welcome Kelrak!

When your trying to do a search for threads in the forums then you have to make sure you click on the search option located in the forums tab. You do not want to use the box you see on the top right hand corner of every other page but the forums index page. There are so many options in the search page that you can really tweak it for yourself (including using and, not, & or with your keywords to include/exlude/or have one or the other of your keywords in the threads). Just takes some getting used to. Sometimes though there are hiccups on the site and at those times the search feature just may not work but the majority of the time I do not have a problem with it. I apologize to you in advance if you are already using the search in the forums page and was experiencing one of these hiccups but on the off chance that you were using the box on the top right hand corner this should help with your searches.

This is the search that I find works best when looking for thread in the forums:

THanks, I finally figured that out late last night. It's very helpful.

So, I guess I need to attach the arms and legs to the panda, THEN frost and cover with fondant, right? I made the parts separately and started wondering if I put it together first.

xstitcher, does this work in the galleries too? I was searching like this:

'"painted fondant" not royal icing' in the gumpaste/fondant gallery but I got lots of results with the words 'royal icing' in the title for the picture. But I did get many pictures of painted fondant too.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Kelrak,

I haven't been able to use the logical operators "and, not, or" in the galleries search. The search keywords you enter in the galleries are found from looking through the description/title/keywords that the cc member adds to their photo. It would definitely make things easier though if we could use logical operators in the search though. I'm sure it is on their to do list for this site, I'm just happy we're able to limit our searches to specific albums for now. icon_smile.gif

I've used rice krispies treats several times...this purse is RKT covered with fondant. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1413926&sub=1413931 but yeah, I had to put a couple of layers of fondant before I could achieve a smooth look. Also before I covered with fondant I did put a layer of buttercream, let it crust a little and then applied the fondant.
Good luck!

Thanks again for your collective advice and experience. My panda turned out cute, in my opinion. However, my daughter didn't really want it on the cake after she saw it, and we took the cake in a different direction. She's so indecisive.

I'll post my panda picture later. I'm really glad I attempted to make a figure, and would definitely do it again!

Ahhh congratularions Kelly! your panda came out sooooo cute, I love it!!!
I too love to work with rice krispies...once you get the hang of it you love it. The purses I've done in a couple of my cakes have both been rice krispies. I figured that way I can work on the purse ahead of time and worry about the cake later.
Good luck!
