I have a 4-tier petal pan wedding cake and I was wondering if there were any "tricks" to covering it in buttercream.

Please help!!!!! Desperate in Indiana!!!!!!!

Give yourself PLENTY of time to ice it. The petal and the heart are both a pain to ice.

Although I've never tried it, it seems as if the Melvira Method might be good for the petal shape. Look it up on this site.

I actually like working with the petal! Ice the top of the cake first and then smooth the sides little section by little section! I think it's easier as you have less to concentrate on at a time!

I've only used the petal pan once so far (blue cake in my photos), but I was complaining out loud about how hard it was smoothing the frosting on the sides.

Husband to the rescue -- he said, "Why don't you use that paint roller like you do sometimes?" Yep, he and the previous poster were right, the Melvira method worked better than anything else I tried.

Pipe the icing onto the sides of the cake with the icer tip or my personal favorite, tip 12 going up and down. (Yes, it's terribly time consuming, but I can't use the icer tip properly because my hands are so small).

Doing it this way gives you even coverage over the whole cake. All you need to do is smooth out the seams with a hot spatula or scraper. You only need a very light touch.

I would use sugarshack's method with the hot bench scraper and do a section at a time.
