How do you price a 3-D cake? I am getting asked to do more of these since the tv shows!! I love to do them but I always feel like I am not getting paid for the time it takes to sculpture them. I live in Iowa a small town, I don't want to scarce people off with pricing to high. So, can you help me, Please?
Thanks
$4/serving is a good start for 3-D pricing. Minimum of 20servings, which means that the cakes start @ $80.00
Regarding pricing...those cakes are labor intensive. And if people want them, then they should pay. Period. So don't be scared to charge what they are worth.
AMEN! I just took a 3-D carved class for the FIRST time ever and it was a BLAST! But it took us 2 full days from start to finish (about 20 hours) so I agree....don't be afraid to charge what they are worth! SO MUCH FUN!! I DEFINITELY will be doing more of those cakes!!
I live in what I think is a small town. I charge $150 minimum for 3D cakes, and the price goes up depending on detail/size/ etc. I was charging $75, but I realized I was cheating myself. You can get a cake to serve 20 from me for $70, so why wouldn't they get a 3D for the same price (which would most likely feed more people anyway)...So make sure you aren't selling yourself short like I was.
Thanks for all the advice!! I haven't seen the pic yet of what the lady wants so I will definitely be charging more than my regular prices! $4 dollars a serving sounds about right to me.
I have a minimum price of $150 for about 20-25 servings (starting with one 9x13 sheet.) These cakes are more about the time they take than the number of servings, the cost of the cake is the least of your worries. If you only charge $80 for 20 servings you'll be earning close to minimum wage when you're done doing everything you need to do (I don't work for minimum wage anymore )
I start with the $150 minimum, then go up based on the time it's going to take. I've been doing 3-D cakes for a long time, and they take just as long as a wedding cake does if you do them right!
I start with $150 minimum for carved cakes, I don't care how small. Anything that goes beyond that, starts at $5 a serving. You every try to carve something perfectly smooth and round...and then cover if in fondant?!? Yeah, that's some work.
