When I look at photos I normally don't comment unless I'm wowed, but i am gonna start to comment on any one I pull up from now on. I know how it feels to look at my photos and no one has commented on my cakes yet, i start to wonder if they are any good. I think it makes someone feel amazingly good to get a compliment. Unfortunatly when the website was still under construction I uploaded some of my most amazing cakes and no one ever got to see them on the homepage.

I try to leave comments on cakes that I look at and enjoy--especially those I put in favorites. I guess I don't want to leave a comment just to leave a comment. I want to leave a sincere comment--even if it's "this is so cute," "so pretty," etc. I know that I'm also more likely to take the time to leave a comment if the poster has taken the time to "talk" about the cake a little bit--if they've left some info on how the made the cake or the flavors--I'm a curious person I guess. I love to know the details!! icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL good observation gramaruth....exactly...I have come across some with over 200 views and maybe20 favorites and no comments, and was floored....I don't have all the time in the world so I may only write "coo;" or "cute" and move on so that I can get to as many pics and give them a bit of encouragement....I don't expect a paragraph but if they like it well enough for a favorite, please say something to them....even if its just, wow thats in my favs!

I am totally guilty of being a lurker. I hate to leave insincere comments as well. I have cakes posted w/ no comments so I will absolutely start posting a comment when I take a peek. Thanks for the reminder that we ALL need love! icon_smile.gif

I imagine that must be frsutrating. I find it also frustrating when someone questions the artist on how they did it, and no reply.

I must admit, I lurk too, and have a large selection of faves. I will definately get on thaticon_smile.gif

I have a bad habit of looking at pictures and not commenting. I usually just look and move on. But what I do is go into the forums and try to answer unanswered questions if I can. To me, that seems a little more important because sometimes people are in a bind and need answers asap but no one answers them. So I try to do my part that way.

Personally, I seldom have anything different to say. Be the 11th person to say cute cake?

I don't post pics JUST to get comments, but they sure are nice. What really irks me is when there is one favorite and NO comments. If you thought it was good enough that you put it in your favs, for pete sake take the 10 seconds it takes to make a comment.

just because someone looked at the cake does not mean they liked it. would you rather they put a comment like "eww, how ughly" ? i wouldn't. i figure if no one commented then it was not worthy of their time. which is fine by me. i know i am not the greatest. no offense to anyone but there are some ughly cakes out there, including my own. i do not get offended. i had a lot more pics in the beginning, but people were not commenting or even viewing, so i took them off because i was upset. now, i know better. i hope one day i will make a cake that will have that "WOW" response.

Wanted to add my two cents worth as a Gallery Supporter... I can't quote all those from above with whom I agree, or would love to elaborate on, but here's some of what I know:

I try to comment on at least 10 photos each day (My goal is a full page, but usually something takes me away and I do not get that far.) It's rare that my few comments do a lot to change how many pages of uncommented photos are truly out there. If we Gallery Supporters take a few moments to post of our own Forum, many would realize there are days where it shows 12 pages, but there are truly as many as FORTY pages of uncommented photos out there! (Our Forum is open to Gallery Supporters only, but answers many questions that come up when working to get those pages down.) I always start on page 12 knowing they are some of the oldest out there. I will admit; however, that rarely do I comment on more than one cake if a person has uploaded multiple cakes on the same day. As well, it does not have to be constructive criticism. Often, it is a comment on how much I admire their handwriting (mine is awful!) or how neat their borders are. I don't have to be "wowed" to comment. Sometimes it's the whole package, and sometimes it's a part of the package.

If each Gallery Supporter would take time to comment on five pictures a day, just imagine how few pages there would be! A Gallery Supporter Member is just that: there to support. I think that if we take on the title and agree to the requirements, then we should make a concerted effort daily to "support" our fellow cakers.

Didn't mean to come off sounding like this is a lecture --it's just a "soapbox issue" and one close to my heart!

Yes, it's great to get comments and feedback but not receiving them shouldn't get you down in the dumps either. I don't necessarily think it's a reflection of your work. I think it's just the nature of a huge site that gets so many pics uploaded daily. There's no telling how many people out there looking are just brides or cake lurkers...just wanting to look. I admittedly do not comment on every pic I look at or favorite. Maybe when it came in to full view it wasn't what I thought? Maybe I'm looking at yet another detail and it's my 5th time looking? Maybe I'm searching for ideas on a specific theme and looking at many under that theme...I'm just not going to comment on every single one. And I think it's OK! And then there are times I do just sit and browse and comment on those that struck a cord with me. It doesn't have to necessarily be "WOW" either. I don't want to leave a comment just for the sake of leaving a comment, I don't want it to sound generic.

For me, being added as a "fav" is a higher compliment than a comment.

And let's not forget those who probably don't even have their comments turned ON. (they may have many views and favs but no comments) You can check your settings under your profile page.

I "open up" a lot of pictures because I like to see them large and enjoy the detail, not necessarily to make a comment. If I commented on all those I love I would sit on this computer at least 8 hrs straight! icon_lol.gif

Guilty!!!

I dont always comment because I read on one of the sticker topics for newbies when I first joined a couple of people said they dont like cutesie comments like oh nice etc 20 times, but rather something with a little more substance. SO I guess since then because I didnt want to offend anyone, I just got into the habit of not commenting unless I could find something "deep" to say. I now comment more frequently than I used to, but I just wanted to bring up one reason people may not comment.

I don't leave comments anymore because too many times I've seen postings about people complaining that all the comments say the same thing - such as pretty or very nice. I don't have any skills, so there's certainly no way I could do any kind of constructive comments - so I look - add to my favorites if I want to refer back to it, and move on. I'm sorry this bothers people - it feels like the pics are a no-win situation these days.

I posted this comment in another thread earlier this year regarding the same topic:

I have a different point of view regarding the cake photos and comments. I don't post my photos with expectations of comments. I use CC as a place to communicate with other cake decorators - both professional and hobbyists alike. Posting my photos allows others the opportunity to look at them and if they are so inclined - to post a comment. Only one time have I posted a photo with the specific request to let me know what other CCers thought.

When I started on CC I was absolutely thrilled when someone took the time to comment on my cakes. Then I stumbled into a thread from members that frequent the website complaining about all the new photos being uploaded and how hard it was to comment on each and everyone. I thought people were commenting because they actually wanted to say something about my cakes - not because they felt they had to - and I was upset to say the least. I don't view this website as a popularity contest, and don't post photos just for the chance that one might be "most popular", etc. I guess I am a little jaded now and when people do comment, I can't help but wonder: did they comment because they really wanted to or did they feel like they had to so that no cakes would go by without someone commenting? Unfortunately I will never know the answer and will continue to appreciate the comments, but am not going to whine and complain if my photos don't receive a comment. My personal growth as a cake decorator is what I am most interested in and the ability to communicate with other fellow cake decorators.

Am I going to be upset because the biggest cake I have ever made has had 2587 views since May 31, 2009, with 48 favorites and 24 comments? No. I am flattered that so many people looked at the cake and that people liked the cake enough to put it in their favorites and that some liked it enough to comment.

Those of you who don't want the Gallery Supporters to make the first comment on your cake (for whatever reason)...
Just make the first comment yourselves, mentioning the flavor of cake or something. That way it won't come up on their page as 'uncommented.'

Problem solved.

Just a thought..... maybe it doesn't apply, but here goes. Cakes that are entered in contests, get plenty of viewing and people put them in their favourites, but are unable to comment on them until the contest is over. Could it be that this is what happened to your cake?
You have some gorgeous cakes, by the way. thumbs_up.gif

Ohhhh no! I'm in no way ready for any contests and not sure if I will ever be after seeing the beautiful work here!. I guess that's why the 'sincere' comments mean so much, it's a validation from people that you admire and respect and who know what goes into some of the creative process, rather than just the 'ooohhh's and ahhhhh's of cake-receivers who may not understand what it took to get the cake to the presenting point (don't get me wrong, I love those too!). That was kind of my point in the beginning.

Kind of a 'you're one of us now' thing!
heh

I hate being a brat about not getting any, it's so silly... but when you present a cake to someone 'not of the cake world' and they go crazy for it... it's not the same as having a cake-peer make a comment.

Know what I mean?

Sure do. Being a newbie, it kind of makes me feel inadequate when you post a pic and get views and/or favs, but no comments. I welcome all comments and crtiques, it helps me to be better at this thing of ours.
