I'm going to be making a two tier cake for my father-in-law's 75th birthday. He requested that I make the Betty Crocker "Cherry Chip" flavour cake. (I was going to make a scratch cake, but he wants a mix instead )
I rented two Wilton rectangular pans...one is 9 x 13 x 2 and I know that it uses one box of mix. The other is 12 x 18 x 2. How many mixes will that use??? Do you think two boxes will be enough for the 12 x 18 pan?
Thanks in advance.
I would think it would depend on if you are going to do anything with your mix. If I make the wasc, I use two batches of that recipe for my pan.
No, 2 is not enough. I usually use 3 1/2 mixes in the 11x15
I find you need about 1 1/2 cake mixes for the 9x13 to get a full cake. The 12 x18 should take 3 mixes.
Ikoenig07 Do you REALLY use 3 1/2 mixes for an 11x15?? wow!
Good thing I bought 5 boxes of cake mix "just in case."
I'm glad I asked...I would have ended up with a pretty flat cake had I gone my way.
A million Thanks to all.
Laura
I think a lot depends on WHERE you live....I'm up 5300 feet in the mountains and if put 3 mixes in my 2" pan I would be cleaning the overflow off the oven floor! 2 does it for me and 3 in the 3" deep pans for the 12x18. One in the little 9x13 fills it up nicely.
Wow! I live at 21 feet and 3 mixes would overflow my pan too! I only fill the pans 1/2 full, how high do you all fill?

Mine are filled somewhere between 1/2 and slightly-more-than-half. (just confirming ... 3 mixes for the 12x1.
According to the duncan hines website, a cake mix yields 5 to 5.5 cups of batter ( http://www.ask.com/bar?q=how+many+cups+of+batter+in+a+cake+mix&page=1&qsrc=0&ab=2&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.duncanhines.com%2FnewDuncan%2Fpub%2Ffaq%2F ).
According to the wilton batter chart, a 12x18 needs 14 cups of batter and the 11x15 needs 11 cups. The 9x13 needs 7 cups.
Which means.....
9x13 needs 1.5 mixes
11x15 needs 2 mixes
12 x 18 needs just under 3 mixes.
Altitude is definitely a factor!
I suggest doubling the WASC recipe (using the cherry chip cake mixes). I would mix a package of cherry Kool-Aid with the water that is required (for added flavor) OR 2 2/3 cups cherry soda and maybe 1 tsp almond extract and 3 tsp vanilla extract. i use one WASC recipe for the 12 x 18 and there will be more than enough to fill the 9 x 13. Fill the 9 x 13 first and put all the rest in the 12 x 18.
