Hi ladies, I am hoping someone can help me. I am from Texas and whenever I am home, I always have to have my favorite cookies. They sell them at the HEB bakery and also at Mexican bakeries. They are simple, nothing fancy, but so very good. They are round, and a bit chewy, thick and come in yellow, brown (chocolate) and pink. I kick myself for not taking a picture of them. I think they are called polvorones, but they are NOT the polvorones that I have been seeing on searches on the net. These are a bit chewy and the surface is a bit cracked. Sometimes dusted with sugar, not powdered sugar. They are not Mexican wedding cookies.

Oh please someone tell me they know what I am talking about? I don't want to wait another 2 years to have these cookies again. LOL. icon_wink.gif I'm feeling homesick and I think these will help. icon_biggrin.gif

I know exactly what you're talking about, but not sure what they're called - like a fat sugar cookie, right? When we were in San Antonio I got some at Mi Tierra's and said, these are so good, when I get home I'm going to look up they recipe online...my aunt was like, do you know what they're called? They all laughed at my response..."yeah, galletas!" which apparently means"cookie" in spanish, lol...so if you find out what they're called let me know icon_wink.gif

OK, Ladies I may have your answer. I too am from San Antonio and I know exactly which cookies you are speaking about. I made a very similiar cookie from a cookbook that my mother gave me a couple of Christmas ago and it is the closest I have ever gotten. If I remember correctly it used lard and that is what gave it the texture that you are familiar with. I will have to dig up the recipe and I will print it as soon as I find it. Give me a couple of days to find it.

Mexican wedding cookies are the crumbly balls with nuts, rolled in powdered sugar. I have a good recipe for those if anyone wants it.

My sister used to date the son of the Mi Tierra owner back in high school...too bad I didn't ask for the cookie recipe then icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif I don't think they use lard in the cookies, at either Mi Tierra or HEB, or even when I've had them various places in Mexico. Lard has a particular taste to it that's hard to disguise in sweet food.

Mexican Wedding Cookies (not the cookies the OP was searching for) oringinally from 365 Easy Mexican Recipes (and it's the only recipe in the book that I liked icon_biggrin.gif)

1 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3 tablespoons powdered sugar, plus more for dusting
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour
1 cup pecans (I usually only use 1/2 cup)

Preheat oven to 375. Combine butter, 3 T sugar and vanilla in food processor with the big blade. Process until smooth, then add flour and pecans. Process until it forms a dough. Shape dough into small balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Cookies will not spread. Bake 15 minutes. While still warm, put in a ziplock bag with powdered sugar and toss until coated.

You could probably do it without a food processor as long as you bought really finely chopped pecans.
