Long story short.
Live in a smaller town.
Entered my cake in the county fair, not big on cake decorating.
Was the only entry in my division (adult amateur).
Got 2nd place!!
Really!!!!!!!

Image Was even inspired by the great Colette Peters!

the must be smokin the wacky tabacie or something. That is a gorgeous cake to begin with, and then being the only entry, you know you have skillz when you scare away the competition icon_lol.gif

You need to get out of town! Your cake, design, color selection, and construction look spectacular. We'd certainly give you the blue ribbon! Don't let this discourage you. Keep making your beautiful cakes.

that cake is lovely, they must have some very high standards!
as to coming second when you are the only entry. some competitions do it this way, they have set criteria for each award, and if you dont achieve it, then you cant get the position, regardless of how many entries there are. works fine when theres lots of entries, but kinda sucks if its only you!
xx

That is beautiful you did a great job.

I had a similar thing happen to me, I entered a small show, was the only adult amateur to enter and won 2nd place, but found out after that the judges re structured the scoring instead of having 1st-3rd for each category and just scored 1-3rd overall. So I actually won 2nd place OVERALL not just adult amateur. Could this be what they did here also?

Is it possible it's second next to your other cake that was "best in show" or was that another year? Love your cake-- the flowers are like fireworks!

Why instructions? If you look at that cake it's pretty obvious how to do it!

Great cake BTW!

I do not think I was directing my comment to you.If even you are the Cake Boss and Duff roled in one, there are some other people without your superior decorative potentials that you displayed in your posted photos. Some of us joined this forum because we realise that no knowledge is lost and will always be willing to learn from better decorators like this topic author. This is one beautiful cake like none that I can see in your own posted pictures,Mench.

That cake is gorgeous! You probably would have won first place if there were other people. How in the world could they only give you 2nd place? That is STUPID!

I don't know the cake that inspired you, but the only thing I can think of, is that were was a judge in the know there, and if it was a direct copy of CP's cake...well then, you'd get an automatically lower place from me just on that basis alone. Seriously, that theory was a stretch, and not insinuating that you did this. Unless you did that. icon_biggrin.gif

Jamie -

Not only are you correct, but some cake shows would disqualify the cake because their rules state that the work must be completely original.

Before the OP posted this, I had seen her cake in the gallery and commented on it. I love love love the look. About the fair: Maybe there is some fine print in the rules that if there is only one entry, it can't take first place??? Makes no sense to me, but then I've entered plenty of county fairs, and let me tell you, "fair" is a misnomer.

I don't know about state fairs. But I love this cake. i saw it in the pics before you made this thread and spent some time admiring it even before I knew there was a controversy. It's really a nice cake and one of the more interesting ones I've seen here. Well done.

I agree. I am fairly new to this site and I am addicted. There are so many people of here that are so knowledgeable and experienced. They give wonderful and kind comments, advice etc. There is a HUGE variety of levels of decorators on here. From those of you who amaze us all everyday to those who have never decorated a cake and are just curious. This is an amazing site. I am on the forums reading all the time but I rarely post because I am scared of what someone might say to me. I sometimes have a question that may seem ridiculous to someone more experienced but it isn't a dumb question if I don't know the answer. I still won't usually ask. I realize when you post you open it up to opinions you may not agree with but opinions are different than insults Queenfa was giving a fellow cc-er praise and encouragement when she needed it. I thought this site was for sharing ideas, not tearing someone else down. icon_sad.gif
