Not sure what to do at this point, or if I even have any options. I was looking into starting a business in CT selling cakes, cupcakes and cookies. I initially wanted to start out of my house and hopefully all waould go well and get a location someday. Just got off the phone with the licensing department and am disappointed to hear that the state of CT will not license a home kitchen. Not sure what to do because financially we are just not ready to spend alot of money leasing or buying a separate location. Also my youngest is only 7 months old so I would not have alot of time to be there. I figured starting slow out of my home I could take only the projects I felt I could handle and once the kids start getting a little older do more and more. In that situation it wouldn't matter how much I was making. This has been a life long dream of mine, its my passion and my fun. Arghhh, feel like I just hit a wall and have no options unless I have alot of money to spend on this to get/rent a facility.

I understand your feelings. It is very frustrating. Unfortunately there's probably not much you can do to open your own place at this point. Don't lose your dreams, just know you can't achieve them for a while. For right now, maybe get a job at a bakery. This would allow you to use your skills and have fun, make money, all without the added expenses and stress of doing it yourself. Some great artists work in other bakeries, Bronwen Weber comes to mind

If you have your heart set on opening a business, don't give up! I also have a young child and limited funds to get a business started, but I am doing it! My advice is this: First check out your local SBA. See if they have any classes on getting a business started. They can be such a huge help and wonderful resource! It is a lot of work to get it started, but it's not hopeless!
Look into renting kitchen space from local churches, Veteran Halls, or breakfast restaurants where you could rent the kitchen when they close. I found a great breakfast place that is letting me use their kitchen for very reasonable rates.
