I am looking for a whipped icing recipe that I can use to decorate with. My family loves my cakes, but they think the icing is too sweet. I have tried the all crisco icing and they say that you can taste the shortening. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I would love to find a recipe for icing that has the same texture as a whipped frosting, but that is stiff enough to use to decorate.

Any suggestions?

You can try the following recipe. It isn't the consistency of Whipped Icing, but more like just a fluffier version of a Wilton Buttercream. I'm not really sure why people seem to think this is less sweet, but they do! It's a medium consistency, it can make anything except roses. This is also an all-crisco recipe, not sure what they'll think, but it's definately worth a try!!

"Dreamy Cream"
2 T Dream Whip powder
(found in the pudding section at the grocery store)
1/2 C Hot Water + 1-2 t.
1/2 t. salt
1.5 C shortening
2 t. Vanilla
1T flour
2 lb conf. sugar

Mix the first 3 ingredients, set aside to dissolve. Cream the Crisco and vanilla. Add in the dream whip mixture and mix until smooth. Slowly add in the flour and sugar and after its all incorporated mix it an additional 1-2 minutes at medium-low speed.

I like the Dream Whip Icing! That is what is on my 2 most recent cakes (and a batch of cupcakes that my son liked it so much he ate 6 and then ate the frosting only off about another 15 lol!).

This icing is like whipped cream. It wouldnt be suitable for flowers either. but kids love it. If you want to decorate with it, I would add a couple tbsps of meringue powder by Wilton. (PS This cake recipe is also AWESOME! The best chocolate cake I have found.)

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup hot coffee
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Favorite Icing:
1 cup milk
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup butter -- softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sift together all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add oil, coffee and milk; mix at medium speed for 2 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla; beat 2 more minutes. Pour into two greased and floured 9-in. cake pans (or two 8-in. cake pans and six muffin cups). Bake at 325' for 25-30 minutes. Meanwhile, for icing, combine the milk and flour in a saucepan; cook until thick. Cover and refrigerate. In a medium mixing bowl, beat butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla until creamy. Add chilled milk/flour mixture and beat for 10 minutes. Frost cooled cake.
