I saw the commercial for it and YES I think it's totally wrong. Release the doves at your wedding and not from your wedding cake. What idiot would actually go along with this????

I didn't get to watch the show last night, but isn't there a health code violation there somewhere? icon_eek.gif

The birds were placed in a plexi glass box so they were not touching the cake. They stated that this was a old school Italian tradition and that his father used to make tons of cakes like this. The cake was actually very beautiful icon_biggrin.gif

i saw the episode last night, and the birds aren't actually IN the cake. they're in a pretty large plexiglass encloser between tiers. When it came time to do the cake cutting the couple just opened the doors for the birds to get out. I doubt the birds were in there very long either, Buddy and his friend were at the wedding the whole time to take care of the bird situation.

Personally, I don't want birds anywhere near my food. But the couple seemed to enjoy it, and the birds looked pretty comfy.

I also seen it last night. It was a beautiful cake! That beening said, when the bride and groom was told to let the birds out, the birds had ribbon tied to their feet for them to be pulled out. The bride grab the string, the groom was a little scared- and I was thinking that if she kept pulling that bottom tier was NOT going to be eat due to the birds falling into it. But she ending up calling Buddy over to get the birds and he handed them off.

This isn't a new thing... the only difference is years ago instead of the plexiglass box, the doves would be hidden in a cage in a large dummy layer in the middle of the cake so that you didn't know they were in there. When the bridge and groom cut the cake, a door on the back was pulled open and the doves flew out... this is WAY old school. I've only seen pics of it from like the 50's. The old Italian tradition (French, as well) is for the doves to be released from a cage on the top tier, but the hidden doves thing was created to be a bit more "showy"

I did not see the show, but I'll catch it "On Demand". My parents married in 1927, (we are Italian Americans), and they did have doves in their cake. It was very common at the time, Buddy is right about that - it was an Old World Tradition. That was then and this is now. I'm would bet that Buddy handled it sanitarily.

I did not like the birds being put in that small box. Last nights show was not good at all. I did not enjoy watching them make pastries. I watch to see cakes.

I saw it too and thought it was neat - especially since Buddy saw it as tribute to his father and family tradition. I wondered though if those birds were going to fly off with those long ribbons dangling from them? Or were they going to be able to retrieve the birds and untie the ribbons and then release them? Just curious.

Okay, I understand tradition and beauty and all, but has anyone ever seen one of those time elapsed videos of a bird taking flight? All kinds of dust and particals etc. are released into the immediate area ie the cake! I love birds, but they do walk in poo and wear it at times, and I do not think you can safely disinfect a bird ( at least an ammeteur). I am an RN gone cake decorator and IMHO this is wrong on so many levels! Yes, his father did it, but back then they did not know what we know about germs and health risks.(I know someone is going to say, but a lot people survived backed then, but why tempt fate) I think avian flu, west nile, etc. and cake and weddings do not mix. Animals often do not show symptoms of illness until the final stages of some diseases. I would have gone with those little fake craft store doves. You can get some beautiful non plastic life like ones. In the final words of a southern girl....Critters and cake don't mix Y'all!!! icon_lol.gif
