My niece turned 4 this weekend and I made her the cake below:

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1398941

When her Mom went to cut the cake she had a fit. She wouldn't let her cut the inchworm. We had to take it off the cake and save it. Too cute icon_smile.gif

What other things have people insisted upon saving from your cakes?

I made a Noah's Ark cake for a baby shower and the Mom to be saved all the animals. They were made out of Wilton fondant, nasty, but she took them home with her.

The latest one was a GP wheelbarrow filled w/ marzipan veggies. My mom (who comes from WW2 era and doesn't waste ANYTHING) thought it was just too cute to throw away so she decided to wash it off to give back to me. (she thought I could use it on another cake.) She put it in her dishwater and came back to it a few minutes later to find a murky brown mess. We laughed ourselved silly over that one. She didn't fully realize it was made of sugar so now really appreciates the work icon_lol.gif

Yes, it has happened twice lately...... first, I made a Welcome home cake for a friend that now lives in the Mid East..... it was her first time home for the Holidays in twenty years...... she took all the decorations home to show her friends in Dubai.....
http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1296464

The other was the castle cake..... the little princess didn't want anyone to cut the cake, and Mom was trying to cut just the back because it was "just so cute".... then of course, when she ran out of servings, it wasn't so "cute"...... she cut the cake with the loud protests of the birthday girl...... icon_lol.gif

I made a car cake for a lady's boyfriend and he put it in his freezer so he could show his friends whenever they came over. Not sure when they ever decided to eat it.

I have family and customers saving things all the time.

One customer saved all the gum paste animals from her 2 baby shower cakes. She wiped them off and displayed them around the nursery. I warned her about possibly attracting ants among other tiny bugs.

My father saved Waldorf and Statler (including the top tier of cake) and put it in his freezer. I had no idea until I walked in and it was on is table to show to a step daughter. I made it almost a year ago - July 3!

People are so funny!

I'm flattered when people don't want to cut my cakes but I also get annoyed. I spent all this time baking and decorating now just eat the thing!!! If I was just doing it for looks, I could have made it out of something that wasn't edible and saved myself a lot of time.

When I make cakes for family they have no problem with the cakes being cut as long as I'm the one that does it.

When I make cakes for friends they refuse to cut them. They tell me that they aren't going to be the one to cut a cake that looks that good. I end up having to cut them, but once I do they dive in. I tell them "guys if I didn't want it to be eaten I wouldn't have made it". It's flattering that they think it looks too nice to eat but seriously, cut the dang cake!!!

When I used to make practice cakes to take to work, people NEVER wanted to be the first to cut them, so I started cutting out a piece at 8am and setting it at my desk. The entire thing was always gone by 10am.

My son saved all of the fondant figures from his Super Mario Bros. birthday cake. Every once in a while he and DD pull them out and play with them like they're toys. icon_lol.gif

The "Thank You" cake in my pictures was put in the teacher's lounge at 7:30 am. I went on to teach and came back during the 4th grade teacher's lunch for a potty break. (We don't dare use the restroom the kids use...scary!) The fourth grade teachers are all eating their lunches and the other assortment of goodies they had in the lounge while all staring at the cake. I walked over, took the knife and sunk it into the top layer. I went into the bathroom and when I came out, there were 4 slices on plates and someone was dipping pretzels in the icing. I don't understand why people refuse to cut it...I made the cake to eat! If I wanted it to stay pretty, I'd have made a dummy cake!

My friend took home the baby converse, suss and keys that were on the baby shower cake I made for her. Her mom thought they were too adorable. And of course NO ONE wanted to cut the cake. I was like, give me the damn knife!

My girlfriend kept the Teapot Baby Carriage topper from the baby shower cake I made for her. It's RKT covered in fondant/gumpaste. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1207403 Her husband keeps wanting to toss it, but she STILL has it and her beautiful daughter turned 1 in May!

I did two graduation gumpaste figures recently and the parents in each case kept them.

I never mind the cakes being cut - I love to have them eaten up....

No kidding. I know they mean well, pretty cake and all the work that went into it, but the darn thing is still for eating.

I made a beer mug all with buttercream for a girl at work some time ago and she took it home and never ate it. She didn't want to cut it and in the end she threw it out. Boy oh boy. I told her, next time eat it, it's a waste.
