Hi CC, I was wondering if you all could help me out, I was watching Cake Boss last night and Buddy steamed a X-BOX cake now my question is for someone at home what type of machine could I use that's inexpensive and that would work as well as a professional steamer....THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

You know it almost looked to me like a clothes steamer I had. I thought about trying it out next time I did a fondant cake.

I didn't catch that episode. What was the purpose of steaming the fondant? I thought moisture and fondant don't mix. Just wondering... icon_confused.gif

Shanna banana, I didn't see the episode they are talking about but I know with pastels and lustre dusts the purpose of steaming is to sort of blend in the powders so they look more natural, plus they adhere better.

I think it is just a hand steamer. It is my understanding that if you "steam" fondant or gumpaste it "sets" the colors and also makes them more vibrant. Buddy also said last night that it makes the fondant nice and shiny.

I LOVE CAKE BOSS!

The steam is not to make it wet so it gets sticky is just enough so the colors adhere and intensify. Anything that throws steam will work. The clothes steamer is great cause it has a hose and you can move it easier. But even a kettle would work for smaller details like gumpaste flowers.

He used a small hand steamer. That fondant was brilliantly shiny when he finished. It was awesome.

Annacakes, cake boss is the new show (Food Network I think) and it has Buddy V.

I think I'm right. Haven't seen it myself but I heard lots about it before it came out.

Yes, the show is the same name as the software that's always advertised here. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Ok this is a very crude way - Hope u folks dont laugh....I took a pasta pot and let the water boil. Turned off the heat and in the top pan set my fondant flowers....for ~2 mins....The flowers turned out very shiny and the colors more vibrant.....This was the cheapest way I could do it...I know this wont work for full cakes but then again it worled for my flowers...Thot I'd share with u all....

Buddy's show Cake Boss, is on TLC, not food network. He really has some great techniques, and a great sense of humor.

I have tried steaming. It only looks pretty and shiny while it's wet. When it's dry, it's dry.. It looks liken any ordinary fondant.

he also done it on a challenge once as well, it was down to the last few minutes of the competition, and he needed to get his fondant decorations on, so steam went on the cake and in no time he had his fondant decorations on the cake. pretty kewl!!

I just steamed some gumpaste roses last night, because they looked dry, and OMG they are so shiny and vibrant. They still looked the same way this morning. Now they tell me to dust them and resteam them again. It sets the dust color. Give it a try, but watch it if you do it to long the gumpaste starts getting soft.

He also did it on the groom's cake (gambling table) on the wedding cake challenge on Food Network, the one where he finished so early. Is that what you are talking about?

I have steamed my flowers in Jennifer Dontz's class and it really made the color brighter and got rid of the cornstarch/10X. I really want a steamer for cakes now. I had a fondant cake this weekend, and couldn't get all the 10X off the edges of the details. I had a fondant wedding cake last fall -the caterer left the fondant covered cake board in the walk in over the weekend. The fondant was sticky due to all the time in the fridge, but it was the smoothest fondant I had ever seen! I think the steamer would just be a more controlled way of doing the same thingicon_smile.gif
