30 years I've been doing cakes and I have NEVER forgotten a cake ... until this weekend! icon_surprised.gif

I get a call Thursday ... a bride calling "....to confirm delivery of my wedding cake on Saturday."

I'm thinking, 'WHAT wedding cake on Saturday?" icon_eek.gif

I tell her I'm in the van and will be home in 4 minutes and will call her back with the details. Yep! There it was! Paid in full and NOT marked in my "booked" files! Oh. My. God.

Called her and told her all was fine, confirmed the details, and spent Friday whipping up her cake. Good thing it was a small one for only 100. (It's the Pink Centered Daisies ... just posted in my pics).

I would have DIED had I received a call at 6:00 asking, "Uh, where the heck is my cake?" As I told her, "This is why I tell ALL of my brides to confirm with ALL of their vendors a week before the wedding!"

So I'm sharing this story to show that even after 30 years, it can happen! So be sure to tell your clients to confirm with ALL vendors! (I know a florist this happened to, also .... she had the wedding on her calendar but had it for the following week.)

Confirm! Confirm! Confirm!! Share this story!!!!!!!

(Although I gotta say, it's one of the better icing-smoothing jobs I've done in awhile! Maybe I should do more last-minute cakes! icon_lol.gif )

Just glad you didn't run off the road whilst driving -

Think i would of hit the brake and then the panic button - wondering all the way home - what size cake was i meant to have nearly completed. icon_redface.gif

Good save - and good looking cake.

Yep, I've had something like this. Woman ordered cake 3 weeks ahead of time. Paid with paypal. She never called to confirm payment. Paypal never notified me of payment. I figured she flaked out and decided to go to Walmart. Saturday morning came and she's banging on my door. I answer in my bathrobe with my hair sticking up. She's P****! I'm having a heart attack while I'm waiting for my computer to start up so I can go on Paypal. Thank God the party was for the next day and I had time to save that one.

Oh, geez. That is a heart stopper. I'm going to incorporate that into my advice for all my cake orders. With my menopausal brain, I never know what I'm likely to forget!!

OH, My God...That's the worst feeling even reading that! I had one week where I'd written down a girl's cake in the wrong month's file, and I'd done the cake the month before. When I came upon it the following month it looked like I had a cake due THAT DAY, and it took me five minutes of panicked reconstructing of what I'd done to figure out that it was done the previous month. Thank God that your client called to confirm, that would have been the worst day ever for you if she hadn't!

It seems like when I'm the busyist- I'm on top of those things... I'm in a groove. but when things get slow I have to check and double check - we all have brain freezes now and then but what an awful feeling to look at your book and realize there is a cake due in a few days....

Ain't it the truth! In April, I had 2 heavy weekends in a row. I had my van and a U-haul box-truck parked in front of my shop, the front room was loaded with double sets of equipment needed for 2 caterings; 2 sets of lists of equipment needed/staged/packed; divided the crew into 2 groups to load the equipment and food ... god help me if I crossed something into the wrong truck! Plus I had to drop off a 3-tier cake on my way to one of the caterings. But as "aaauuuggghhhhh!" as it was, everything went off peach-keen!

after the last break in, i've had a few orders missing off my wall clips....i found out later they messed with my orders, my airbrushes, stole some toy set ups along with my money and cameras....thank the GOOD LORD none of the wedding cake orders were missing...that has been one of the worst parts...peeps coming in for their order and no cake....it's a sickening feeling for everyone....i've been able to do a few saves.....but there were some that were too detailed to whoop out....after i told them the truth....everyone was very understanding....i do have some great customers.

Bless your heart, Debbie!! Been there, done that. it happens; but I've been fortunate to only have it happen once; and I had a couple of days to recoup. Like Terrylee said, it seems some of us work best when there are a gazillion things going on at once. Glad it turned out well---but I'm not surprised at all!!

Indydebi - that almost happened to me at MY wedding!

My step-aunt is the master decorator at a locally owned grocery store. I knew she was up to the task of the photo I'd found of the cake I wanted for my wedding.

We went over it, I paid the deposit, and was told the balance was due 2 weeks prior to the wedding. My wedding was January 5th. I never got the notice I was told I'd receive about the balance, so I called. Unbelievably, my aunt had me booked for JUNE 5th. WOW! The kicker is that she was on vacation that week, but spoke with the other designers and the cake turned out just as I'd expected...but I almost had a tragedy!

LittleCake,
I hope y'all are okay. It sounds like you have had more than one break in. Thank the Lord you didn't walk in on them. (They would have been sorry! icon_lol.gif )

Do you have an alarm system on the shop, or video cameras?

Indydebi,
It sounds like your good advice to your brides paid off for you. It's great that you are able to jump right in and make it look easy.

-Debbie B.
