Hello cake friends
I am looking for a fun name for my new business. Do any of you have a name that you wished you used, or any runner up names from when you named your business? I seem to be having a mental block with this!
Thanks
Keesha

I'm from a big surfing town, and I love to be at the beach. SO my first choice was pipe dreams, because it pertained to the water and to decorating. Unfortunately, there are 3 other non cake businesses in my state with that name, so I didn't want to use it. I'm not very creative with these sort of things, and I personally don't like "Keeshon's Cakes" or anything like that...I like to have the name "pop", ya know?!!
Hopefully someone else can help more!

A lot of people will name their business after the street the business is on. I think JammJenks is called Three Forks Cakes (after the street name). Just an idea.

I had a terrible time coming up with mine. Then one night at choir practice at church, our director suggested, "The Back Porch Bakery". It just rang like a bell, and made sense, because we remodeled our tiny back porch/mudroom into a kitchen, and it is very small. We also live out in the country, and the name just seems to describe the location just right. When people come to get their cakes, they seem to really make a connection between the place and the name. I also agree that putting part of the street location in the name can be a creative and distinguishing thing to do too. Best of luck to you!

When I picked my name, I just wrote down a ton of different words on a piece of paper, words associated with cake, words i liked, words i wish i could fit into the name, and I tried every which way possible with all the words there to see what worked best and thats how I came up with Sugar Wishes. Just an idea, I think its easier to write and look at something. Good luck picking a name!!!

If your going to name it around the location I would still go with something creative. I cant stand seeing people that do art for a living and come up with names that are less than creative! Like if you live in Cambridge, naming your business Cambridge Cakes to me isnt very creative. You should try to make the name with what you specialize in or to give a hint of what you do. Off the top of my head Top Tier Bakery, or How The Cookie Crumbles.
I decided on my name just because of what happens when I bake. I make a mess! I have sugar everywhere. So it just seemed right to name my business With Sugar On Top. A lot of people commented on how they thought it was cute. I told them it was because the sugar ends up on top of the stove, on top of the counters, on top of the floor.... lol

what is your life about? Mine revolves around my children - I was a SAHM prior to doing this so I knew I wanted to incorporate my three boys into the name. Another thing I would suggest is to look at tons of bakeries online. Do you want it to end with cakes, sweets, bakery, baking company, etc?

When I came up with mine, "Cake or Death", it came from a comedy sketch I love by Eddie Izzard. A couple days later, I also thought of "Cake and Dagger". There are so many great plays on words you could use. Definitely go for something creative. I constantly get comments on how much customers love the name of my business!

When you come up with something you like, Google it. Will it get lost in a sea of other cake and sweet shops?? Does it bring up porn sites??

I think this stuff is important in this day and age. Something catchy, not too mainstream, but won't leave the average person wondering what in the world your business is. That's a tall order, I know! But don't settle for anything you don't love. icon_smile.gif

I am just seeing this thread today for the first time. You're exactly right about my name. My area has several good choices. How cute is it that the name of my community is called "Sugar Loaf"! I even went to Sugar Loaf Elementary School and it is tiny.

Keeshonjohnson- give us a little more to go on. Do you bake from home or will you have a bakery? Cakes or other things too? Kids? More location details?

I love these threads. It's like a personal challenge to me. I think I have picked out 4 for other CCers so far. Bragging? kinda.

...but my mom picked out mine. go figure.

VERY IMPORTANT! I had thought of a very cute name, but only porn sites popped up when I googled it. Lots of porn stars named Cookie and Candy! icon_wink.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

If you plan to have a website, you might also want to check potential names to make sure the domain is available.

I am loving the input icon_biggrin.gif
I am very new at this. Working out of my home, word of mouth orders only at this point. I have 2 girls (5 and 2) and a golden retriever (oh and a husband too). My husband HATES cakes and the dirty kitchen they make icon_lol.gif
I live in a city with tons of other cake makers, I am not looking to make millions, just to enjoy being creative and creating yummy desserts.
So far I do cakes, cupcakes and cookies, but I have always loved desserts and experiment with lots of other sweets.
Thanks again for all of the input, it is fabulous.

Here's my approach:

Since you will be doing this from home, think of words that are synonyms for "home" such as:
cottage
villa
manor
loft
house

Then think of what you want to do along with other words with similar meanings such as:
cakes
bakery
sweets
desserts

This gives you a starting list of nouns. Now just put some adjectives...

Encore Bakehouse (as in the end of the meal)
Sweet Manor (can do plays off the word "manner")
Happy Endings (as in the end of the meal)
Crazy Kitchen (your husband's take)
Flour Patch Bakehouse (very cute but it may be taken)
Good Measure Sweets

I haven't looked to see if any have been previously used. These were just off the top of my head.

You could also use something to do with your location. I don't know where you are, but lots of times the cutest things are right around you. Maybe your kids' names begin with the same initial? If you like to exercise, you could be something like "Fit and Filled" or "Fit and Full". Lots of possibilities....

i went through a lot of name choices before i settled on one.
in my house when someone would ask the question where did you get that purse(or car or shoes etc? we would answer either "the getting place" or the purse fairy (or car fairy or shoe fairy etc). so i of course had to name my shop "the cake fairy"
everyone thinks it's so cute but i know it comes from my being a wiseacre on the inside.
now since my 20 yr old daughter died and she loved tinkerbell it kinda is in memory of her (to me) and it makes it all the more special to me.
take your time and play with a lot of names until you find the one

Cake it or Leave It is freakin AWESOME...that's how I feel with cheap clients that do the jaw drop thing when they get the total cost for their cake...LOL

ok, my business name is actually my youngest daughters name "Divine" Desserts...which I've seen another biz here at CC....and theres zillions of them when I do a google search, it still doesn't really matter because it's so symbolic to me that I wouldn't change it for anything but I didn't think about that in the beginning and it's a very important issue to consider when naming your biz.

We went through tons of names before we decided. I don't have suggestions on names as much as what to consider. BTW It helps of you have done a business plan because it makes you think more about the future not just the here and now. I will use my original name when it was just me(Chasitys Creative Cakes)in the examples for reference.

1. Will you only be doing cakes? If not then do not put cakes in your name. Ex. we do cakes, cookies, candies, brittles, fudges dipped strawberries etc. so Chasitys Creative Cakes may not lead people to you for your other goods.
2. If you use a street name it would be hard to move your shop to another location. Ex. Main Street Cakes now located on Pine Street.
3. Again if you use a county, state, city, area location in your name you will have the same problem if you decide later to move. Ex Texarkana City cakes located in Dallas.
4. If you use just your name will you someday want a partner in the future. Ex Chasitys Creative Cakes was only for me and now I have 2 partners now which I would never have thought would happen.
5. When you do decide on a name you can google it but it doesn't matter if someone else has that name only if they are in your area will it matter. Ex my business is called Edible Elegance with a tag line of making memories just a little sweeter. We are located in Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas and if you google Edible Elegance you will find one in spokan wa and waterford mi but that doesn't matter because they are not near us.
6. Our town is known as the twin citys or twice as nice so we considered making that part of our name or tag line but then again if we decided we needed to move we couldn't keep the same name without it being a little wierd.
7. Don't spell things in funny ways. Yes it may look cute but it will get old quickly Ex. Cakes4U or Crazy Cakez because everytime you are telling people your name and they need to write it down you will have to spell it out. And the same thing when you give people your website. Kinda like anyone who has a different spelling or different first or last name you know you you are that person when someone asks you your name and you start spelling it without even being asked
Lady: and what is your first name
Me: Chasity thats C-H-A-S-I-T-Y
Lady: and your last name?
Me: Grissom thats G-R-I-S-S-O-M
I thought it would get better when I got married but no it's the same
Lady: what is your new last name so we can change it in our system
Me: Russell that R-U-S-S-E-L-L icon_biggrin.gif
8. The best thing we did was write down a bunch of ideas and show them to friends and family they are the ones who brought ideas # 5 and 6 above.
9. Dont make it or your tag line too long.
Ex Our name is Edible Elegance our 1st tag line was We make your memories just a little bit sweeter. But we shortened it to Making Memories Just a Little Sweeter. Remember you will have to fit your name and tag line onto business cards, banners, ads (where you pay per word or inch)
10. Keep everything above in mind but above all else like the name you pick. If you like the funny spelling of Cakez then just know you will always have to spell it out.

HTH Sorry it's so long
Chasity Russell thats spelled C-H-A-S-I-T-Y R-U-S-S-E-L-L LOL icon_lol.gif

Everyone has great advice and are so creative! That's it. I just wanted to say you guys are super creative.

Okay, okay, I do have one suggestion. STAY AWAY from a "Piece of Cake", " Slice of Cake", or any other version like that! Let us know what you decide! icon_smile.gif
