So I just got engaged...and everyone keeps asking me...are you going to do your own cake? (I am a cake decorator and an instructor) Just wondering fellow cake decorators, have you done your own wedding cake, or had a fellow cake decorator do it for your wedding or special event. I chuckle when they ask me...but I was just curious. : )

I am getting married in 4 months, and unfortunately I cannot make my own cake, for several reasons:
1) I have my board certification exam (genetics) one week before my wedding. MAJOR stress
2) My wedding needs to be kosher, my kitchen is not kosher. I know that the cake will taste like crap.
3) I am a perfectionist, I see every single fault in very cake I make, I would never be happy with the outcome. I guess I would rather a pretty cake that tastes crappy than a yummy cake that looks crappy

I guess it is just better for my sanity this way...Besides I might go Bridezilla on myself

Well, we'll be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this year, and I'll be making our anniversary cake. I also bake my own birthday cake every year too.

Been married ten years this September. Like an idiot, I did make my wedding cake with the help of a girlfriend who is also a pastry chef. Some inconsiderate boob at the reception knocked it over and it fell on the floor. Because I made my own cake, I was stressed about the wedding and about the cake coming out exactly how I wanted it. Not that it mattered because it ended up in a huge pile on the floor of the reception hall anyway.

My advice, find someone to do your cake. You'll have enough to worry about getting dressed, fielding dumb questions, worrying that your fiance will get cold feet (or worse yet, you will), trying to dodge in-laws and a plethora of other issues a wedding brings. Having someone else do your cake (and having a very detailed contract), will ease up some of the burden.

God bless you on your upcoming marriage nevertheless.

i agree with Tita 9499. You will have enough to do! Get someone else to do the cake.

I think it depends on how much a part of your life cake baking and decorating are. If it is more important to you than whether the DJ shows up or not, whether your guests are all comfortable, whether you chipped a nail at the last minute......
I would say yes do it.
I have never made my own cake as a bride but as the mother of the groom I have done it two times. The first one I decorated at home, staying up all night, transported 250 miles to the location. The second one I did last summer. They wanted fresh strawberries for the filling and iced with a cream cheese buttercream. I couldn't make it in advance. I baked the cake at home and did all of the decorating in my hotel room. It was kind of stressful but the end results were great. The guests loved it...my son and daughter-in-law were so excited over how it was received. It made the final moments, of their perfect wedding, a grand exit.

If you decide to go for it, I would make arrangements with your mother or the made of honor to take care of anything that might pop up at the last minute. ....and don't stress over perfection just make a great tasting cake that is going to look better than any you could have purchased.

People who love sky diving get married while free falling, people who love horse back riding get married at the ranch....... it only seems proper to me that a cake decorator make her own cake.

I think you'll have way too much to do.

But......

if you let someone else make it, don't be like the some brides in some of the other posts who go bridezilla!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

My SIL made mine (17 yrs ago), and I look back and say "WTF was I thinking???"

I made my own wedding cake 16 years ago, and it was my first. I spent the two days before my wedding baking and decorating, was a good distraction. Also saved tons of money. Everyone at the wedding was so surprised when they found out I had made the cake. Go for it! icon_smile.gif

I have only been married for 2 years, but I took up cake decorating only a year ago so not in time for my wedding! However, even if I was decorating then, I probably wouldn't do my own wedding cake. There are so many little details to take care of, especially in the last month before the wedding so the last thing the bride/groom needs to worry about is baking and decorating a cake!

My advice to anyone who absolutely wants to do their own cake is to do it in styrofoam dummies. That way, the cake can be completed months ahead of time and won't add additional stress right before the wedding. Then you can hire a baker/caterer to make sheet cakes to serve to the guests. Remember to make one tier real cake, though, if you want that classic cake-cutting photo! thumbs_up.gif

I think it depends on how much you can do ahead of time. I would bake and freeze the cakes a couple of weeks before. Make flowers ahead of time, or put fresh flowers on the cake, and delegate some of your other projects to other people. It would really depend on how stressed out you get, if you can handle it, I'd go for it.

Hi, I made my own wedding cake.. its in my pics, really glad i did it and was stoked with how it came out, it was my first wedding cake too. Just know exactly what you want to do and plan plan plan! I planned my whole wedding and managed to get everything done, luckily my work were flexible and i could use some spare time to make calls etc. It all depends on whether you think you can do it! It will work out fine what ever way you do it!

No way in h*!! would I make my own wedding cake! I've had enough disasters just making my own birthday cakes! More power to those who did or are planning on making their wedding cakes, but it's definitely not for me! I want my wedding cake to be bigger, better, and 'badder' than the cakes I can make, and I fully intend to pay accordingly for it! $$$$

Besides, don't get me wrong, I love what I do, but making cakes is STRESSFUL, and I'm the type to be freaking out about a cake, thinking it's an ugly disaster the whole way through, until its totally finished when I can step back and see that it looks great. So making my own cake would just add a TON of extra stress to my life in a time when I'd need it the least. icon_razz.gif

And if something went wrong... OMG... I would FLIP out and probably have to be sedated, and end up unable to finish! icon_cry.gif No way would I have a clear enough mind to try and fix any problems!

Hahaha... in case I haven't been clear enough: no, no, NO! I would absolutely NOT make my own wedding cake! icon_lol.gif

Still, rock on to the brave brides who do!! icon_biggrin.gif
