I have been making gumpaste roses, and I am undecided which is better, the 5 petal cutter or the single petal cutter? I was curious what everyone on here thought as far as their favorite cutter to making life-like roses?

I love the single petal butter... I haven't used the 5 petal cutter but I'm guessing that it makes the work faster.

I've only ever used the 5 petal cutter. It makes a pretty rose and doesn't take long!

Hi. I have both and find that I only use the single petal cutter. I really just enjoy forming and attaching each petal individually.

I've used both as well and prefer the single petal more. I feel like I have more control over where each petal goes.

I used the 5 petal one, and it tears so badly sometimes when I thread it through onto the wire and to me it ends up looking blah, even after you add the greenery. I need to make some large roses soon, and I wasnt sure if I should go with the single or 5 petal one, and I felt to go with the single because the 5 petal one doesnt go very large. Do any of you get inspiration from floral books or do you add color on your own liking? If so, what is your favorite floral book? I havent found a floral book I really liked so far, I would like to find one more with pics than history of the rose/flower itself. Sincerely, Veronica

I've only used single petal cutters and circles, but have had great success with both. Found I got bigger roses with the circle, but that's probably because I only have 5 single petal cutters...

As for books, I find Alan Dunn really inspirational. Fantastic colouring and incredibly lifelike flowers.

I've only used the 5-petal cutter, but I seem to always be out of time so speed counts. Nicholas Lodge uses it on his wedding cake DVD, so I'm thinking that it must be okay.

i also use the round cutter, i tried the pedal cutter but didn't like it as well, and i don't inter lap mine, i use 2 little circles to go around the tip of the cone and use about 10 pedals the first ones i press closer around the middle and the outside i start almost at the bottom so the rose opens, i watched different video's on u-tube and liked this the best.

I start with a 5-petal cutter and finish with individual petals, but I use a calyx cutter to separate one 5-petal cutout into 5 separate petals. MUCH faster. See this thread for more info and pics: http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-622934.html

I like the single petal cutters. It took me a long time to get my roses to where i like them, and now that i have, i don't want to fix something that isn't broken by trying a 5 petal cutter

oh i forgot, i guess you know to use just a tiny bit of water, my first turned into mush, and i cut out my pedal and take a freezer bag and slit it up the side and put my petals in that until i'm ready to use them, i usually do three at a time

the water would be for gluing purposes. What I like to use is a smally ball of gumpaste dissolved in warm water. works. great tonedna1 has a great tutorial on youtube about how to use the round cutter.

I just watched her youtube video and it was packed with a lot of information, I never used a circle cutter before, but she has now made me want to try it out. I am planning on trying it out this week, I will let you all know how it works out for me. Anyone else have great success with the circle cutter?

I use the five petal for certain types of roses (tea roses, for example), but I still prefer to use individual petals for the most part.
