I've got to make a racetrack this weekend and was wondering the same thing. Of course, I'll be OK if I end up with a gray track, though. But I was thinking of making the fondant chocolate and then trying to add the black - works for buttercream! But hopefully someone who knows what they're doing can give us both advice.

sure you can! i would start with making brown fondant and then adding black...but, remember that even though it may not look as dark as you may want it...it will get darker as it sits. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

It is possible to get a nice black color on your own but it is easier and faster to buy it! I used to make my own and now I buy Satin Ice in black. Much easier!!!

How long will the premade fondant last, if you only need a little black?

Same as regular fondant. As long as you seal it really well, it lasts a long time.

I made a real nice black fondant for a race track cake with white mmf and black food coloring. It was a smallish lump, but it really didn't take all that much coloring. Let it rest a while when it is near the color you want and you will find that it darkens. My problem was having black food coloring on my hands for the next week...so I recommend food gloves to knead your coloring in. Also roll out on silicone because you can't get the corn starch all the way off of black unless you wash it off which will make the fondant shiny. HTH good luck!

I make MMF. Its a bag of mini marshmallows melted with almost a whole bag of powdered sugar mixed in. I add vanilla and about a quarter cup of cocoa powder to make it chocolate. Then it is brown and easier to make black. I use Wilton colors because that is what is readily available in my area. I had trouble with this at first too.....

If you go with MMF just remember to heat it in the micro for about 10 seconds whenever it starts to get hard. I also suggest a muscular man to help mix it if you don't have a mixer with a dough hook. I kept several muscular men in my cabinet until I got my stand mixer! lol I wish! Good luck!

I used the standard MMF recipe and wilton's black food color paste. I will attach the pic of the cake I used it on. It turned out well for me.

The road is a bit shiny, because as I said, you can't get corn starch off of black fondant without washing it off. At first I tried to only wash the spots off and the road looked like it had leprosy or something, so I washed the whole thing and ended up with shiny which was ok.

I've stopped trying to make black fondant and started buying black Satin Ice. It's made my life A LOT easier. icon_smile.gif I found that black food coloring seemed to cause my MMF to seize up and get chunky and that the color was never quite right.

Brown fondant (or chocolate) and add black

Order black fondant online (that is what I did)

Paint with black coloring mixed with a little pure vanilla (I have done this as well, but it takes A LOT).

I use the MMF recipe of the cakejournal.com website and at the time to add colour I add cocoa and black colouring. It will go as dark as you like by the amounts that you add of each item. The chocolate really helps the black along. I have used it on many different cakes and decor some of which you can see in my pictures. Good Luck! icon_smile.gif

i just tried making some a few hours ago. i was going to do chocolate first but totally forgot and just started with white mmf and added a butt load of black food color. it seems to have worked pretty well but the texture seemed to be off a bit so i'm not sure how it's gonna roll out. i added wuite a bit more water than usuall when mixing it up. i also used a different brand of mm this time so that might have made a difference too. i have tried getting black with the wilton fondant before and it turned purple in spots over night so i ended up spraying the entire cake with the food color spray. i was making purple fondant with the wilton again(both times 1/2 gum paste) and it turned blue overnight so i don't know what the deal is. could have something to do with the store bought fondant ing or the gum paste?

I too plan to made a black cake eventually. However in the mean time i did made some biscuits recently that needed black icing. I started off with a chocolate fondant made with cocoa then added the black colouring and it came out great! It will take a little bit to get to black and may look grey for a while but keep going. however it might take alot of black depending how much you are colouring. Here is how my black turned out:

When I made the black MMF for this cake http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1323358.html , I added the black coloring (tons) at the stage when the marshmallow is melted just before the icing sugar is added. It turned out a nice. You really have to put a lot in because like the other posts, it can turn green on ya.
