Okay, so I bought one of those designer stencils, for a round 10 inch cake. I have iced the cake with butter cream and let it set. EVERYTIME I try to do the stencil on the cake, the stencil sticks to the butter cream and it's a TOTAL mess! What can I do? Do you HAVE to use royal icing to do the stencil? cause I have been using warm butter cream. I thought that would work too.....

Try dusting the stencil with cornstarch.

i did my first stencil cake yesterday . i didnt have any trouble with it sticking but i did use just my regular colored buttercream , maybe you are pushing too hard when you are putting the frosting on and that is making the stencil stick.
good luck Tami

Are you using a crusting BC? It has to be well crusted or it will stick. You can use slightly thinned BC to spread over the stencil and try to do it in one swipe or it will lift the BC from underneath through the stencil if you try to smooth it too much.

The video on the product website suggests letting it sit over night or place in fridge to set up and harden so it isn't sticky. Here is a link to their video. It seems like it may be helpful. HTH.

If you're able to, put your cake in the refrigerator for 15-20 min to really firm it up. Also, I've found (after my own stencil cake-tastrophe!) that I had to really thin the BC for the best result. Hope it turns out beautiful!

Thanks for all of your help! I finally got it done and it looks great! I will post pics tomorrow, I'm to tired to do it tonight. I was up till' 5:30 this morning doing a last minute moose cake that needed to be done by 12:30 today. Then, I got right back up and started the next one, which has taken all day! So, I'm a bit caked-out right now...going to bed!

Thanks again!
