I got a request from someone wanting a cake for her daughter and she wants it to be "all about her" as she put it. She told me her daughter likes to play basketball, listens to her Samsung S3 constantly, lover her pink Nintendo DS, likes to take digital pictures and garden, loves God, likes barbie pink, bright orange, and green, and loves Taylor Swift...

Do any of you have any suggestions on how to incorporate these things into one cake? I am a little overwhelmed by this request! It is going to be 2 tiers. I plan on making the MP3 (Samsung) player out of gumpaste, and possibly the Nintendo DS as well, but as for the rest...help! icon_smile.gif Thanks!!!

That sounds like a lot of things to put on one cake. I would ask which of those she likes the best and stick to that. Pink seems to be a recurring theme, so I'd stick to that color scheme.

Best of luck and be sure to post pics of the cake. icon_smile.gif

wow that is alot. I assume the colors for the cake will be pink orange, & green. what about doing flowers piped on it for the garden .. maybe a white picket fence too on the bottom tier, Maybe a topper made with the basketball or the cross. on bottom tier top around it you can put the gumpaste MP3, Nintendo DS, and a gumpaste camera. Notes of music, and some lyrics from Taylor siwft songs ( find out her favorite one) piped around the top tier. Can do a few bible verses like that too.

This girl sounds quite vibrant and unique. I would try and capture that in the cake. You could do the top tier in 3d ball pan and decorate it as a basketball, the bottom tier could be done with pink, orange and green funky flowers, and then make the DS and MP3 out of gumpaste as you were planning. If you have or have access to an edible image printer, see if you can get a couple photos of her and her friends or Taylor swift and scale them down to those mini polaroid joy cam size and paste them onto the bottom tier.. For a final touch you could print an edible image of taylor swift an cut and shape it onto a gumpaste music note for a cake topper.

I'm super jealous of you because this sounds like such a fun cake to make and this is how I would probably do it. A busy cake for a busy girl!

Hope that helps.

For Taylor Swift and MP3 player - what about putting a Taylor Swift song/image playing on the screen of the MP3 player?

OMG thank you so much txsteph! That's so cool of you to do a sketch for me!!! I love the idea of the bible verses around the cake, and I hope I can do some music notes, although I am a horrific piper, and I don't have any music note cutters LOL.

I liked txsteph's sketch and I also liked nolee's idea of putting pictures of the girl and her friends on the cake, How about putting the teams motto on the basketball as well, if they have one of course

I really like the idea of putting pics of the girl and her friends too - I just don't have an edible image printer, and have no clue where I could find one to use...darn it! I love the idea of putting a "video" of a Taylor Swift song on the mp3 - that's an awesome suggestion!

Justbeck that's a really cute idea too!! Although I'm not sure I have the confidence to tackle a carved furniture cake at this point. I would love to do one like that though. I'm still pretty new at decorating so I am wanting to do something fairly simple, but also inclusive of her personality. I'm thinking 2 square tiers maybe, with the Nintendo leaning against one tier, the MP3 leaning against another tier, with music notes on wires sticking out from the cake...maybe a fondant/gumpaste basketball in there somewhere...and her name with a bible reference underneath it on the bottom tier...

As far as wanting some photos on there, but not haveing a edible image printer, no fear!! Before I got mine, I would go an have re-prints made of the orginial photo an buy some of those self-laminating sheets, cover the photo an you're good to go!!
Gonna be one cool cake!!

call around to local supermarkets or bakeries. Most of them have edible image printers and will print your images for you for a nominal charge.

Good point. I work in a grocery store bakery and we sell edible images for $5 each. Which is exactly how much we spend to make them. (I work in a military facility and we aren't allowed to make more than a 5% profit so we sell at cost fairly often). I'm sure other stores will sell them as well.

The most I've ever paid for an edible image at a grocery store is $10
