Hi everyone,
Today is my birthday and my hubby and best friend took me out to dinner. After leaving the restaurant we decided to take a run over to the grocery store and buy some cupcakes so we could stop by my parents for dessert.
Well, first off, none of the desserts even looked appitizing to me. They had this one cake that had a glob of icing on top, sprayed with food coloring and dolops of white icing for eyes...I'm guessing it was supposed to be a monster. I told my friend that I would be scarred for life if I ever got that as a child...
When we got to my parents to eat them I was completely upset that they tasted so awful. The whipped cream icing tasted like some literally just whipped cream...no sweatener or flavor or anything. Than the cake part tasted like cardboard!!! I was so upset. This was a special treat because I'm normally on a low carb diet and felt that it was such a let down.
When I got home I emailed my other cake maker friend about my experience...and she said that we're both cake snobs because neither of us like grocery store cakes....
Is that so bad???

Happy Birthday! Don't get too upset...I guess because it was your birthday you were even more cheesed off at trying a "sub-standard" cake. I think our expectations are higher just because we know we can make better cake! And there's nothing wrong with that! icon_biggrin.gif

Ever since I started baking seriously a couple months back, I find myself more critical of the taste of outside cakes. (My husband even more!!)Like I was told this hotel had the best black forest cake. Mind you, it cost a bomb for a slice and then when my husband and I tried it, I immediately thought - I wasted my money! What a let down. I only eat cake outside when highly recommended. Haha...I guess I'm cake snob! - but we should be proud of it! icon_lol.gif

I am a cake snob and I don't think that it is a bad thing.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! party.gifbirthday.gifparty.gifbirthday.gif

I never, ever get a cake from a store anymore. It's a waste of money for sure. thumbsdown.gif They all do taste like cardboard, crisco, or nothing at all. What gets me is that people actually buy them! I guess they don't know the difference between a cake decorator's cake & a retail cake. When they do find out they will never buy another retail cake again! thumbs_up.gif

I'm a cake snob too! icon_biggrin.gif When my friends go to weddings (of people I don't know) I get them to take pictures of the wedding cakes & groom's cakes for me! icon_lol.gif I make them tell me all about the cakes & how they tasted! icon_lol.gif Usually they'll call me on their way home from the wedding saying my cakes are the BOMB!! (I've brainwashed them!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_lol.gificon_cool.gif LOL!!)

It's ok to be a cake snob!! LOL!! thumbs_up.gificon_smile.gif

I think I was a cake snob even before I started making cakes! My husband always teased me because I would quiz every grocery store that I went to to make sure that the made cakes with the kind of icing I like... There's one store near us that you have to specifically ask them to use buttercream or they use this stuff that tastes like a jar of marshmallow creme. Yuck! Being a cake snob just shows that we have good taste!

Funny this topic came up! Yesterday my boss asked me to go buy a cake for a girl who was leaving my office...I had to go to Sobeys to buy one of the most disgusting cakes I've ever seen! I told my boss he should have told me he wanted a cake as I would have made one for her! He said he forgot she was leaving and we needed it by lunch! There was actually a line up to order one of these cakes!! I felt like passing out my card to everyone in the line up and telling them to buy a cake by me! haha I guess this categorizes me as a "cake snob" too!!

this is funny! i was actually called a "cake snob" by a coworker yesterday. we were on our way out the door to a meeting at the same time a going away cake was being served to a dear lady here in our office. after making such a fuss over this lady leaving and getting everyone to sign a card, the ladies that headed up the cake purchase bought what looked like a pre-decorated cake off sam's club bakery's cooler rack!! i was very disappointed in the look of the cake - can't tell you what it tasted it like, as i was running out the door after i got a good look at the cake. it looked to be about 11X15 size with tiny "congratulations" scrawled in the middle (not centered mind you) and it was red, white, and blue - hmmmm, wonder if this was left over from july 4th! the border was very nasty looking widely spaced strings squirted to hang off the edges! i should have stopped long enough to take a picture for you guys! i'm sure ms. judy didn't even notice how ugly her cake was but she is such a sweet lady that if it tasted like crap she wouldn't say anything! she deserved a lot better than that!

Happy Birthday! If being a cake snob is wrong, then I don't wanna be right. icon_biggrin.gif

Luckily, there are several bakeries here that make fantastic cakes. There are even some grocery stores that make good cakes. I always avoid the grocery store cupcakes cause I'm not quite sure what that glob of stuff is that they heap on top. Ick!

Hi. My name is Dolphindreamers and I am a cake snob! Yes, and proud of it too! Quality means a lot! I recently made a bridal shower cake for a girl I work with. She had a shower with her family prior to this one. Her cousin made the cake for that one. The mother of the bride complained that her cake was dried out and wanted to know how my cakes are so moist! (Patting self on back!) My cake was her gift to her and I will be doing her wedding cake. Again I'm not charging her due to the fact that they have done a lot for me. But, maybe I will get some orders out of this wedding! it's for 200 people!

First let me say, Happy Birthday to you!!!!!

I really think I've completely corrupted my husband with cake. If he tastes someone elses cakes, he always tells me on the way home, "I'm not just saying this because you do cakes, but that cake was awful. Your cakes just tastes so much better than theirs." This always makes me feel good .. lol he tells all this family/friends that if they want a good cake, call me.. if they want a cardboard cake, order from the chain grocery stores icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, not only am I a cake snob but so are my girls! My girls are 5 and 7, and they don't hesitate when at birthday parties to say quite loudly, "Mom this doesn't taste like YOUR cakes, Yuck!" Yes, it's a bit embarassing, but always ends up a conversation starter and I get orders!

yes! Being any kind of snob is bad. But it doesn't stop ANY of us from being one.

I try not to judge other people's talents, because you never know what kind of infirmaries or disabilities or limitations they have.

The only time I look down on someone else is when they act as though they are far more superior than others. Then I feel it is fair to judge their work, since they blast their own horn so loudly. Some people act as if they are splitting atoms rather than cake layers! And form experience, the really talented decorators don't need to do that. And, even the most talented and experienced have off days.

By the way, I have seen and tasted a great cake at our local grocery store. And, as far as those decorators go, some are talented and others aren't quite so.

Just my 2 cents!!

Happy Birthday! Sorry you got bad cake! But you are definitely not alone!
Yes, I am a cake snob.
For my birthday this year, we went to my husband's parents' lake house with them and his sister and her family. First, let me say, my mom used to make a wonderful carrot cake every year for my birthday. But we don't live in the same state anymore. Anyway, my husband knows how much I love and appreciate a good cake or dessert and just good food in general. So I thought, surely he will surprise me with a great cake this year. Wrong! They went to the grocery store that day and got this chocolate cake that was just not good. I should have known, he is not a planner. But I was so upset! He now knows and understands the importance of quality birthday cake. We'll see what happens next year.
