i tried covering a choc cake last week and it was a total disaster. the cake fell into pieces, crumbled all over the board, together with the fondant.

so i had to scrape all the fondant, which at that time, was already sticking with icing on it, plus crumbs of cake.

the cake was later converted into cake balls.

having no idea on what to do with the ruined fondant, i stuffed it in a ziplock & in it went into the fridge, and been there since.

now, do you trash used fondant, or there are some creative ways i can make use of it?

I would (and have in similar situations) just bin it. You could use it to practice modelling with, but that would be about it!

Hi, if something like that happens, I just bin it, because cake crumbs are in the fondant.

If its jsut left over fondant ( with no crumbs in), then I would add a bit of CMC or Tylose powder to it and use it for modeling!

i don't think you can rescue your fondant since it has crumbs in it not sure what you could do with it.

if i have fondant left, which i always do since i am terrible at guessing how much i will need, i also save it. i will use it for accents on future cakes. or there have been times i have enough to cover a whole other cake.

i keep each color in a ziplock bag and have them thrown into an old fondant container.

I do the same as mom2owen1. If it touched the frosting or cake, I trash it. If not, I save it in ziplocks and use it for modeling or, if enough, for a new cake. It lasts for a while if it's airtight.

Housepainters have leftover paint, woodworkers have a wood scrap pile, cakers have cake trims and unusable fondant.

It's part of the natural waste of doing business.

If it's only touched frosting, I'll save it. Helps the consistency after rolling out on PS. Though usually I just use it for accents on the current cake I'm doing, perhaps something in the same couple days. I guess I don't save it for TOO long, but I use homemade cream cheese fondant, which is different from other varieties...

Personally I just throw it away. But there are some times that I just let the kids play with it, like Play-dough. They love it, but tend to put their "creations" into the freezer. Once, I had quite the collection of fondant figures in my freezer. I thought they were going to take over. LOL.

I always end up throwing it away too.

Everytime I need to roll out fondant I always have a "scrap" piece. You know how EVERYTHING sticks to white fondant? After table/counters/hands are washed I take that scrap piece of fondant and rub it over the table and my hands before I roll the stuff that is going on the cake. I have picked up tiny threads and fuzz that regular cleaning leave behind.

Its obsessively anal of me...I can spot the smallest crumb in my fondant- I hate IT!!

How about coloring it a dark brown or black colour? Do you think you can use those colour on your next cake?

the thing is still there in my frridge, haven't "binned" or "trashed" it yet... i was going to do it, but seemed to have forgotten.

maybe turning it into playdoh for the kids is a great idea. or like didi5 said, make it dark brown, and maybe cover a practice cake / dummy? am not sure which path i will take LOL...
