I have an order for a 3 tier (6"/8"/10") cake. I have never done a tier before. Do I need to use dowels with this or is this small enough to just stack?

You MUST use some support system (whether it be dowels, SPS, SFS, bubble straws, etc) inside this cake.

I would suggest dowel rodding it. Especially if it's going to be transported.

Some people don't dowel rod a 6" and a 10". Opinions will vary I'm sure but I would dowel rod it.

Good Luck! thumbs_up.gif

Hi, I have always used dowel rodds. You need to dowel the 10" and the 8" . You need to insert at least 4 dowels each. If you are going to transport the cake already stacked, you need to insert a centre dowel too. And also make sure that you put thin boards under the 8" and 6" cakes as the same size as the cakes.

Here is a link from Wilton site on how you use dowel rodds.

And this one is how you stack the tiers.

Hope these help you in anyway! icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif

Everything you need to know to bake, assemble and decorate tiered, stacked/layer cakes:

Leahs also has a sticky on SPS:

I personally wouldn't take the risk stacking 3 tiers without any support. It could slip, it could sink and you'd be left with a huge problem. I honestly would prefer Leahs SPS but since I don't have them available, I stick to my wooden dowel and boba straws.
