Cake Mix Box And Tupsy Turvy Cakes.....!!!
Decorating By Charmed Updated 29 Mar 2009 , 5:20am by CakesIMake
Are cake mix box cakes sturdy enough to make tupsy turvy cake? Aren't the cakes too tender for this purpose. I am afraid that the cakes would just collapse or crumble
I will be doing one in the next couple of months, just to see if I can pull it off, and will be using a doctored cake mix. I will also try WASC (in recipe section) to see if that is a better, more sturdy cake. Will let you know what I find out.

I would think that as long as you dowel it enough it should be fine. It isn't any different than stacking normal tiers, just need good support.
It depends. If you are doing the carved topsy turvy than WASC might not be sturdy enough. I like to use either a dense chocolate cake or I make WASC and substitute a pound cake mix for one of the regular mixes.
I use kakelady's WASC recipe for the ones i make and it most certainly is sturdy enough.
I am totally lost and would like to know a step-by-step method of doing a topsy for my Daughter's Sweet 16 which is April 18th, 2009.
I went to a bakery who wanted over 600.00 for it & that's just too expensive!
I know I could do this my self but would need help knowing what to use, ingredients, how-to put them together. Basically a step-by-step approach.
Could you please help?

How many people was the cake for? It may have been very reasonable. Topsys require a lot of work! They are no simple feat
Here are some great instructions:

Red and lime green one i only have a few pics posted cause i just got brave enough to finally enter them here cause all the cakes shown on this site is outstanding so i was a little hesitant to post mine but i did(:
Go for it it was fun
My Wizard of Oz cake - kinda topsy turvy was with package mix. It held fine and was easy to carve. 3 layes and carved down to 2 for the slant. the support sysytem held it together good. Anything more angled and tipsey I think I would go to a heavier denser cake.
I used DH for the zebra print one I posted and it worked out just fine. It was picked up and was transported assembled.
I like the Durable for 3d recipe on this site for topsys
sometimes i tweak it a bit more egg
