A Thread For All Uk Bakers!!

Its actually a very deep pink LOL :) I cheated and used pre-coloured as they wanted such a deep colour, I generally only colour my own when its for pastel shades!.
Its 2 parts Renshaw Fuschia to 1 part Renshaw Raspberry Pink. It came out a beautiful colour though, I loved it! I coloured the RI to match it though with Wilton Rose and a smidge of Sugarflair Claret.
Oh that's lovely Mel - I also love the colour.
Thanks for the comments on the cherry cake Mel and Barbara - must say it was a "proud mum" moment for me! :)
Kathy
Sorry - left Victoria out - thank you. I love your lace by the way - can't see any cracks anywhere.
Kathy
I'm currently sat at my InLaws getting to grips with her MacBook Air……very difficult for me….but here are my 2 latest projects….my favourite factors of each are; the church spire done in pure flower paste (It was still standing the next morning where I had piped it with RI)…and on the Discworld's top tier tinting the isle of Krull orange and managing to pipe the 'Circumfence' along the side. :D
I shall read this thread properly when I get home this afternoon.
AThe frozen dresses were along these lines...

Very beautiful just not my style.
I too really want to see the theory of everything! Need to drag H2B there very soon!
Lovely cake nanny, really amazingly well done.
Also love the cherry cake, I saw that on fb last week and loved it. And yours too spireite!
Can't remember who asked about quilting but when I did mine I stuck 2 cocktail sticks on a ruler at 1 inch intervals and then used them to make little marks all around the top and bottom of the cake. Then I just scoured the lines in with the ruler, matching up the top and bottom marks. I used a little star tipped tool to make the corners of each diamond a bit deeper and then popped a ball in each. Hope that helps!
ANow, just sat down to catch up on this thread..... Nanny; I couldn't see any flaws until you pointed it out....and I honestly can't see the problem. Kathy; Beautiful painting on that cake. Mel: I love the butterflies on the baby shower cake. I also wondered how the nice chunky chips were done, they worked really well :)
I do think we are our own worst critics....my Mother inlaw permanently tells me off for me pointing out my flaws to ppl...but my latest cakes show why I am only a hobby baker...and a lot of you are professionals!!!! I think I really need to look into doing a course come September to teach me some proper techniques! My flowers fall apart as soon as I put them down!!
That blue wedding dress looks great...shame my figure's the wrong shape....(I'm very top heavy with square hips!!)...oh and I doubt I will ever remarry as I'm still married to the current husband :D
Lizzy, I've double checked by doing the water test- each hemisphere tin (6") takes about 2 to 2.25 cups of water (the water fills the tin to 2/3 full).
Sugarluva, Frozen dresses... interesting!
Kathy, that's a beautifully painted cake your daughter made. Same as Lizzy, I just cover the dummy in trex, and when I've take the SP off, I just wash it.
Chezza, easiest thing to do is to watch youtube videos on cake quilting. I do the same as Mel, cut card, score the SP with my little pizza cutter tool (still don't know what that thing is called). It's not hard honestly, just need to be careful when you start to score!
Victoria, why not look at other venues rather than your flat? Parish halls, community centres, etc for cake decorating classes. It means having to haul everything you need but it means you're not breaking the terms of your rental contract.
Mel, lovely cake. The butterflies are a lovely finish.
Speirtie, fab cakes. That spire is so tall, you've done well to keep it standing up. I'd be a nervous wreck if I had to deliver that lol
Jean, I didn't make that very clear - sorry! I meant setting up a business making cakes rather than teaching (I think that's what you're meaning - am I misunderstanding you there? I'm definitely not experienced enough yet to be thinking about teaching ). Thanks for the suggestions - I'll have to look into those. I suspect I wouldn't make enough to cover costs if I rented facilities for doing the cake decorating, as my health means I wouldn't be doing cakes full-time (and it's a bit unpredictable when in the day I'd be well enough to work, which would complicate things too), but it's certainly worth looking into, and something I hadn't thought of.
Anyone else who runs a business from home from a rented property?

Maybe phone the landlord to find out for sure
AI'd call the landlord Victoria, they may well be fine with it. Probably the area you'd have problems is if you're thinking of doing consultations from home. The problem there is public liability insurance, which you may or may not be able to get, as I don't know if you'd be liable if your landlord if anyone claimed.
Oh thanks for doing that Jean - I could have done it myself really couldn't I, rather than being a bit of a numpty :-D
Nanny, that cake is awesome!
Love the butterflies Mel :-)
Your discworld came is really impressive spireite, that looks like it took some doing! Your MIL is right btw, my hubby does exactly the same. It's taken me an awfully long time to get better at it, but pointing out flaws to customers is a massive no no so I can hold it in now. You lot are fair game though, I can point out all the glaring errors I can see on my cakes to all of you :-D

Love the fish and chips Nicola, I'm with Lizzy, chippy chips should be chunky. I bet your soon to be FIL loved them didn't he.
Thanks nanny.
Have you made your sister a cake loubee?
Don't even think about the calories Lizzy, even if you didn't have any to spare one day's not gona hurt. If you can't have a nice meal for a treat when you've got rid of the kids there's something wrong.
Has anyone seen this? It's from the new frozen film. It's only short and they're showing at cinemas before the new Cinderella film apparently. I'm a bit disappointed, if they were going to have a cake in the film they could've taken inspiration from all the frozen cakes that are actually being made couldn't they?!
I made her two boxes of cupcakes Maisie, she was really chuffed with them.
Victoria beautiful cake lace I can't see anything wrong with it.
Nanny fabulous cake as always and again I can't see anything wrong even when you've pointed it out.
Mel beautiful baby shower cake and a change from the usual ones you see. I love the colour and the butterflies.
Kathy amazing cake painting from Sophie.
Talking of dummies can you ladies and gents recommend some to me, I need to get some as I'm missing cake decorating as I'm not baking much due to dieting so dummies will solve the problem of wasted cake.
Marvel jealous of your CI haul I bet you can't wait to use them.
Spirerite great cakes. I'm shattered today I've been on a school trip to Liverpool today and I'm going on the exact same trip again on Thursday. Bed early tonight I think.
AThanks guys :) The solid butterflies were cut with Clikstix, and the lacy ones at the top are a set of Jem cutters. Bit fiddly, but really pretty!
Victoria I can't help I'm afraid as we aren't renting, but it can't hurt to ask the landlord? You will need to check with home insurance though. I don't have customer collections or consults at home because it would have upped my insurance as a result.
ASpireite that's an impressive cake! Well they both are but wow that spire came out great didn't it? I'm no clearer on disc world sorry. Maybe I shouldn't say this but I'm daft so I will - when I saw the disc world cake I thought for some reason you'd put a map of where the church was because I thought that was the spire sticking out! Duh. Funny comment about remarrying - chuckled at that! Kathy

Ahh, Thanks Kathy, The SP on the church came out all bumpy...I had planned on leaving the brick walls as plain ganache...but I totally misjudged the angle of the roof, so had to cover with SP. The windows should have gone up to the guttering...but I quite liked the effect of them getting smaller.....the church is actually on a hill which I didn't account for so I was never going to get it exact!!! :)
The discworld was the cake where my friend phoned me in tears a couple of hours before the party "I love it...I love it" was all she could say!!! Only 2 other people in the room knew of discworld ( She told everyone to just google Terry Pratchett's Discworld.) they all thought I had had a few drinks in deciding to put 4 elephants on a cake....I got (rather appropriately) serious elephant skin on them...and then I made them too large to fit onto the turtles back...so I had to disembowel one elephant and then smooth his skin back down to fit them all on.....I didn't get round to making tusks....and one of the heads fell off and I was frantically trying to re-secure it using edible glue and a cocktail stick the night before....and then we had to drive 125 miles North with it secured on the back seat with the seat belts......I could go on with all the things that didn't quite go to plan :) Oh and the little White Mountain in the Centre is ' Cori Celeste' the tall mountain where all the Gods live!!!
AWell done on the cakes Spireite.
Thanks for your fab comments, have to honest that was one cake I wasn't looking forward to, but I have a lovely comment from the guy's wife who picked it up, so nice.
Mel I have those Jem butterfly cutters, never used them, your right they do look fiddly but look lovely when they are done.
AOh nanny I forgot to say what a fab cake looks amazing and spireit your cakes are fab too cute little people outside the church

Random question but how do you do quilting (think that's what it's called) on a cake??
I'm a cheat! I have this, which I wrap around a cake straight after covering, but then I go over it with a tool to ensure even definition...

Oooo that sounds easier lol might buy that impression mat when I am at the supply shop next along with the tool (as I don't have any tools)
ASorry Spirite I missed your cakes, they are great, glad your spire stayed up! No idea what Discworld is though LOL
Nanny they are lovely, trick is (after much trial and error!) to get your FP nice and thin and leave it to go a little leathery before cutting out, any stickiness and you'll not get the little blighters out ;)
AM4rvel - I have the exact same sheet but I must have done something wrong as it didn't do what I wanted it to. Had to use a diamond shaped cutter. Kathy

Well then this is the one you want:
Although, I'm sure I've seen cheap sets in Wilko if you want to have a play with a variety before you buy better quality versions of your favourites?
I indulged in Cassie Brown's 5in1 tool at the weekend. It's so pretty....
AEvening All. Sorry I've been absent again but had so much to do for me course. Two weeks of solid work and I am caught up on all my paperwork and my assessment cake is done. It's not due till Thursday but I wanted to put it together tonight so it has lots of time for the royal icing to set so it doesn't fall apart when I take it in for marking. Just printing out the last of my paperwork and then I'm going to sleep for a month lol
