Hi everyone - off to the osteo in a minute but had to say thanks for finding me on Instagram M4rvel! I absolutely love your Thomas cake. Have fun at the Cake Show - and remember we need pics of you and Jean! And how do you even find comps where you can win tickets to these things?
Last time, I saw the competition on Facebook, but this time they contacted me out of the blue. Very odd, but I'm not complaining...! ;)
AKuuuuushi, when did you get prettier then? I see your protecting your modesty there!
Good idea about the vinyls, I made a tiny record player too, some cd's, a book and a guitar.

M4rvel! Lovely to see you, how are you? :-)
Have fun at CI Jean, m4rvel and whoever else is going. And don't forget, if you do meet up, photos please. :-)
Not bad my lovely, just working myself into an early grave...
Lovely to catch up with you all though.
Jean was lovely by the way. But you all know that already. I do have a picture, but I look horrific in it, so I don't want to post it. I will, but I don't want to...

I love how it highlights that I haven't been to the gym since caking really took off... ;)
Haha, since YSL brought out a lipstick that suited my face? :P I don't have very big lalas so I'm not sure what happened there either! Hahaha!
Ohh yes a record player would be great! Oh! How about getting little "posters" printed out to go on the back of the stall or on the rails on the outside?
Been doing a lot of my shopping at the Ystrad shop recently and I have to tell you that the two women there are really grating on me. How are they to you? The older guy is always welcoming but I feel like the women think their doing me a favour for me when I go there lol!
ADo you me Anne, in the back making the cakes? She can be a little odd, think it depends how she's feeling.
Nicola, the young girl, I find her ok, maybe it's because i'm twice her age, could even be 3 times her age, ha ha.
I mean both of them, I don't talk to Anne much mainly because she's always in the back but the girl, Nicola is it?
She always speaks to her dad like muck on the bottom of her shoe and honestly I find it irritating because he's a lovely man.
I was in there the other day and he was charging someone for something and she screamed at him saying NO! It's five pound EIGHTY nine, which was like 20p more than he said and I felt so awkward for him. Also a newbie came in asking about the difference between Renshaws and Covapaste when I was in there and she said don't even bother with Renshaws it's crap, you'll get ripping all over the place, use Cova it's the best. So I said, well that's your opinion really, I like Renshaws and I put trex in it when it's being particularly difficult, it's all down to what you like, why don't you take a sample of both and find out?
Jesus, she gave me a stinking look, if they could kill I'd be dead a thousand times, haha!
AI don't think it's her dad, the boy who works there As on, that's his son, and Anne is his ex wife. Oh dear, that's not good practise is it? Especially when people specifically ask for advice.
Very odd too as she was the one who recommended the Renshaws to me after using Covapaste.
AOh I thought he was! Oops! Yeah the younger boy is really helpful too and her grandkids are there sometimes. Love a family business but she needs to reign in the attitude!
She did say to me after the woman left with the two brands and said she used to go for renshaws but always had ripping on the edges of her cakes. I said if it's too cold for me I usually get boiling hands from the radiator and then knead it again, if it rips when I hold it from a height then I'll add Trex until it doesn't rip and that's how I test it. She then said that she swapped because of that reason. I mentioned that everyone has different techniques and a lot of newbies use renshaws because it's so readily available and tinting Sugarpaste is a job on its own lol. She sort of chilled out before I left haha!
AKelsey, I genuinely laughed out loud when I read your little bit about logo placement, it really hit my funny bone
Then I read m4rvels little note about how his photo 'highlights I haven't been to the gym' and I started giggling all over again. For the record m4rvel,it doesn't look like that, it's just exactly my sense of humour :-D
We did end up going out :-) My lovely mum had youngest for a couple of hours, so we went to a gorgeous steak house where I had a humongous ribeye. My poor tummy (that's not been filled properly for a month) now doesn't know what the hell has hit it :-)
AHaha lizzy the I think it might have been the loghting in the room... Hahah!
Ooh, what's been happening for the last month, I hope you're okay? Xxx and steak is always on my plate if we go out. Hubby says I should be a cave woman haha! Glad you had a good time!
ALol Kelsey, I hope you know I was referring to what m4rvel said about *his* photo, not yours :-)
I'm fine thanks, just been dieting!
AGreat cake Kuushi,. A very neat finish.
Well I managed the Church cake... I stuck the (flowerpaste) spire on after I arrived with a bit of R I (Thanks Gray)...and an extra pair of hands....it stuck fast and looked fab....shame my finish on the sugar paste wasn't as neat as I would have liked...but it went down well. Someone seriously commented that "it looked too good to cut into"....so I was glad when my husband came back to our table with a huge slab on his plate :D Cake is for eating :D
I shall post pics in a day or 2 as my laptop with Windows 8 won't post for me :/
AIn two tins please nanny.
Lovely cake Kuuushi. I've never had a problem with any of the staff in the Ystrad shop. Never spoke to Anne, she's always out the back but the rest of them are lovely, friendly and helpful. Nicola was ages searching for an image on the computer for me and it was quite busy. I apologised for being a pain and she said it's alright, that's what they're there for. Maybe they'd had a row or something the day she snapped at him.
Lovely photo m4rvel and Jean. Jean you look so young, I can't believe it honestly! And you do not look like you need to go to the gym m4rvel!
Aw so glad you got out in the end Lizzy, thank goodness for mothers eh? I'm not much of a steak person tbh, don't even have beef on a Sunday very often. My husband and son used to complain all the time until I said we could have it the next time they cooked Sunday dinner, they shut up after that!
Glad the cake went well spirelite, it's lovely to hear things like that isn't it. :-) looking forward to the photos. My laptop is windows 8 and I can't upload photos either, I thought it was just me cos I'm not the most technological person in the world but maybe it's not. I can't get on with windows 8 at all, I never use my laptop, it never even gets charged anymore.
I almost set my own Facebook account up today but changed my mind again. Everytime I get close I see something on there to make me change my mind, back to hacking my mams for now! :-D (Only joking, I go on there with her permission!)
I'm off to bed now, night all.
ANah Maisie she's always like it, I dont like her attitude at all to be honest but hey ho, maybe that's just me but regardless wether there was an argument you don't do that to anyone especially if there are customers around. Whenever I go there now I make sure that I head straight for the old guy and if he's busy I wait for him to avoid arguments.
If I'm down my mums end which I have been a lot recently I pop over there as it's cheaper than Swansea by about 20% so it's win win all round. Just was always brought up to respect elders and it grates on me when others don't.
Another Frozen cake next week but luckily it's a replica of another I've done so shouldn't be too bad!
AWow sorry not been here for a few days, just had a big catch up but can't remember anything that's been said. Nice to see Kelsey and Marvel back though! And you've all made some gorgeous cakes as usual.
I finished the fish and chip cupcakes tonight for my H2B's Dad's birthday. He loved them along with his fish and chip themed party. I think I should have made the chips slightly less chunky but overall I was happy with them...

AMaisie, in my book for a 10inch round it says 6 eggs, but in two tins I would do 4 gas each tin, and 8 ozs of everything else that way your gonna have nice and deep.x
ANicola they're brilliant, and I think the chips *should* be big fat ones - fish and chips chips aren't all skinny like French fries!
I'm still full from last night! Also, I've just checked the approximate calories of the ribeye I had.... A little under 1000 calories!!! Plus a starter! Thank goodness I didn't eat the chips! At least I'm still on target as I've run at a calorie deficit all week, but still, wow :-o

Hi all, just having some brekkie then heading off to CI in a bit. I'm nervous and excited- not sure why I'm nervous!!!???
Loubee, aw it's a shame you're not going today! You could still go tomorrow? I'm only going today though, but I htink Marvel might be there again tomorrow.
I did consider the Sunday Jean but it's my sisters birthday today so better not desert her, lol. I'm definitely going to be more organised next year though. Great picture of you and marvel though.
Kelsey lovely that you're back. Beautiful cake for your Mum and Dad, love the handmade bows and the whole bling style of it. Also your bet with hubby made me laugh.
Spirerite looking forward to the pics of your cake.
Sugar love the fish and chips cupcakes they Iook very realistic.
Also glad you got to go out and have something to eat Lizzy. It's ok to have a day off the diet sometimes.

ALove the fish and chips Nicola, I'm with Lizzy, chippy chips should be chunky. I bet your soon to be FIL loved them didn't he.
Thanks nanny.
Have you made your sister a cake loubee?
Don't even think about the calories Lizzy, even if you didn't have any to spare one day's not gona hurt. If you can't have a nice meal for a treat when you've got rid of the kids there's something wrong.
Has anyone seen this? It's from the new frozen film. It's only short and they're showing at cinemas before the new Cinderella film apparently. I'm a bit disappointed, if they were going to have a cake in the film they could've taken inspiration from all the frozen cakes that are actually being made couldn't they?!
HI all
I'll have a good read in a bit. Little one is highly demanding this morning 'play with me, get this, get that'. Don't blame her though, she has a cough and cold. I even spoon fed her (or rather fork fed) beans on toast which she struggles with on a good day!
I had a fab time at CI. I was extremely distracted at first- Marvel's tip was to 'get the lay of the land'. Well I got the lay of the land in the first three stalls I visited but nothing else lol. I meant to check everything out then purchase, but I'd bought stuff in the first half hour. My only disappointment was that there weren't more workshop style stalls that did some advanced sugar work. What they had was for beginners to intermediate (woo check me out) and I did want to have a go at a small flower but didn't have the patience to wait my turn.
I said hello to the Queen of Hearts Couture ladies Valeri and Christina (Filipinos like me!) and we had a short chat. I had a photo taken with them but can't seem to upload from my phone to laptop. I wanted to talk to them just a bit more but nearly backed into their massive buttercream creation so decided to leg it!
Had a loooooong chat with David (what a lovely lovely man) about some advice for my business. I signed up for the pro membership with P Bradford for £99! Original price is just under £250. wow
Of course, needless to say it was lovely to see Rob and Rob (Marvel and his partner Rob)! I nearly didn't get to see them I think. There seemed to be a signal problem with my mobile and I couldn't get through. While I was having my lunch, I saw someone who I thought was probably Rob at one of the stalls, and said hello and it was Rob! So yay we got to chat for a bit before I attended David's talk on cake businesses. They are both lovely fellas.
I can't believe there wasn't a stall selling a range of sugarpaste!! I looked everywhere and managed to buy Culpitt's sugarpaste, but was hoping to try a range like covapaste, etc.
Marvel, hope you enjoyed your stay oop north!
Oh dear sorry my post is so long!
AGlad you had a lovely time Jean, don't apologise for the long post, I enjoyed hearing all about it. :-) Get well soon Mia. x
Looks like you had fun at CI, Jean and Marvel . I'm thinking about going to the London one in March - is there anyone else who might be there on the Friday? I've not been before so don't really know what to expect, but will probably drag my Mum along with me
Love the 25th anniversary cake you made, Kelsey! Are those isomalt gems on the sides of the tiers?
Your father-in-law must have been so pleased with the fish and chips display you made, sugarluva - it's really effective.
Good to hear from you again, Marvel! I saw your garden-themed 80th (I think?) cake on the galleries. Just lovely .
I did my first attempt at cake lace on this cake. It was Pavoni Magic Decor and I baked it at 120 for 6 mins, as it says in the directions. It seemed fine and flexible when I took it out of the mould, but the next day when I came to using it, it was brittle and cracked very easily when snipping to size, and wouldn't attach to the sugarpaste which I'd brushed with a little water - I had to liberally attack the back of the lace with water, and even then it took a lot of persuasion/pressure to stick! It cracked a bit on the fine details going over the corner to the top of the cake, even though it wasn't a sharp edge. Does cake lace usually behave like this, or did I do something wrong? I'm thinking of trying out the Claire Bowman cake lace if I can't get the Pavoni stuff to agree with me about what to do
Just tried to post this and it wouldn't, so let's hope it doesn't go twice instead...
AHello!!
Hope everyone is well, have all the lurgies disappeared yet? :)
Hey! Marvel and Kuuushi! Welcome back, long time no 'see'! Glad you are both doing well, fab cakes being made by all it seems
Nanny, can't wait to see the stall cake, all sounds brilliant! And Jo that lemon cake looks lush! Lemon is my favourite too I think, but then I always love that sweet/sour flavour combo.
Lizzy, yay so glad you got to go out on your meal it sounds lovely! I'm a steak girl too when we go out, nom nom! Which reminds me I must sort something out for our Valentines (but not actually on Valentines) meal out!
Jean and Marvel glad you had a great time at CI, I've seen some pics of the winning cakes on FB and it looks like there were a load of fab cakes on display! Lovely pic of you both too :-) Jean I went to David's business talk last year, he's really nice isn't he! I know what you meant about lack of workshops though, I always think there should be a few more to have a go at.
I've had a busy week, one order of birthday cupcakes, and a baby shower cake. Can only show the cuppies at the moment as the other is on my other camera:
Baked up some sugar cookies today to decorate this week for valentines, and need to get working on a christening cake, as a well as quote for a wedding cake! Speaking of, has anyone ever ganached over marzipan? I have a bride who really wants a textured effect cake, but they want fruit so I wasn't sure I could. But I suddenly thought of trying a white choc ganache over marzipan (they don't want RI over the whole cake) but not sure if it would work??
Oh and re. cake lace, I can't comment on the magic decor a I've never used it, but with the CB white lace it always stays floppy for ages after being made. The pearlised ones however are firmer and not quite as bendy, HTH x
AOoh and for those heading to CI in London, I'm probably heading up on the Saturday.
Although, is anyone else looking at the Squires Kitchen one a couple of weeks before? I've not gone to that one before, but it looks like there are lots of classes and demos on there as well...? Confused now!!
AJust got home. Gosh what a long journey, but needless to say, I had a great time. Now, as I know you all like to see a post CI haul, I've just laid it all out for you...

Had a great chat with Cassie Brown today and have some new things to try out with the airbrush when I get a chance. And accosted Claire Bowman to complain that she doesn't do a rose mat which would be ideal for an upcoming cake I have, only to find that she has one launching next week, so preordered it. Really please with my purchases this time around and think I was a lot more discerning. Last time, I just bought everything! ;)
Still no cake frame though, just don't think it's for me. Have any of you now used it? Did stock up on some better quality dowels as I have a fair few wedding cakes coming up soon though...
Have uploaded some pics on Twitter of my favourite competition cakes btw, if anyone wants to see some more... www.twitter.com/mrbakerscakes
The thing with Squires Kitchen is that it heavily promotes THEIR products, so there's limited choice in purchasing from other suppliers/manufacturers.
Hi folks!
wow Marvel, that's a lot of stuff! Had to walk away from the lace mats or I would have bought them all!
Victoria, the only lace I've tried so far is Lakeland's magic icing. It's great and will stay supple when kept airtight. Didn't have problems with it at all. If you do get it, just remember you've got to use hot or boiling water to add to the powder. It doesn't say so in the instructions and it's because I read the reviews online that I knew about it.
Lovely cupcakes Mel!
Argh I've just seen my photo with Rob. Horrible lighting in CI has highlighted all my under eye shadows and eyebags. Sigh!
