A Thread For All Uk Bakers!!

AIf I told you everything Jean you would be godsmacked, I'm not an angel but she is nuts sometimes, she stopped us seeing ioan for 4 mths cos she said we we aggressive. I maybe many things but we're not aggressive, well John she called that not me, but still, she wanted him to apoloise which he would as he is a very proud man, to cut a long story short, her and rich had gone out for the night, we looked after Ioan, now we didn't know what time they were coming home, so naturally I texted them, so if I was to put ioan to bed or not, apparently they weren't happy, turned up at 11,35, remembering my son was going thro a very bad time, drinking, (just left the army) came in and said, felt he was totally rude and obviously had a drink, so I asked hI'm what on earth was wrong with him, he turned around and said ,it's you pair, with that John jumped up and said ok, time to leave, but they were both face to face, she called John aggressive and left.
The next day she felt she wanted an apology, we said no, uand they both said we'll until you do, you don't see Ioan, it broke our hearts Jean, but felt we couldnt say sorry for something we hadn't done, well it took 4 mths in all, then straight after that they hot married in the may in Cyprus, which unfortunately we didn't go to, again broke my heart, all the money we had saved to go ( as we were going), we spent because after that we didn't want to go, honestly it's like walking on eggshells with her. Sorry not such a short story.
Oh that cake is fab Barbara! I love it. That mug and the trainer are both so realistic. It's a shame isn't it when people behave like that. It's about control I believe - wanting to make their mark - a bit of the green eyed monster is afoot. My nan used to say "your son is your son 'til he gets him a wife but your daughter's your daughter for the rest of your life" - and to some extent I see lots of our friends where that is so true. Still - she'll never have your cake making skills!
Tiddy you are doing the right thing going to the GP. Hopefully they can put your mind at rest.
Well I spent so much money today and that was just at Costco. Got there as they opened the doors and then felt like I was in some football crowd scene. I almost left it all but knew I needed it - got my turkey and plonked it straight in the freezer when I got in. Got myself a little treat - some new add and weigh scales! They are so amazing - my old ones were decrepit but these are so thin I'm worried I might lose them!
Well my fruit cakes have just gone in the oven. I ran out of time yesterday after boiling my fruit. Anyway, I have just finished the mix off and they are in! Have decided to make a couple of tiny extra cakes now to use up the fruit I bought. Can I ask if anyone marzipans the old way? By that I mean do the top and then do the sides separately? That's what I used to do when I royal iced a cake. I want to get sharp fondant and I can't see another way round it.
Kathy
AAw nanny, that's sad that is. I believe what goes around comes around and mothers of sons need to be careful if they stop the father/fathers family seeing their boys. Your DIL might find herself in the same situation one day.
I've heard that saying many times Kathy, it is true I think. My gran said it was never more true than in my case just after I had Leah. I marzipan the same way as I sugarpaste, I'm new to decorating so I did a few sponges before I ever covered a fruit. I didn't even know there was another way to do it, I just rolled it out and covered it in one!
Oh and speaking of fruitcakes I still had some mixture left from the other day, in the bowl, in the fridge. Not enough for a whole cake really but I did t want to waste it so I baked it today, just to see what it would be like after, what, nearly a week I think? Anyway, it's absolutely fine. I gave it a quick mix after it had come to room temp and bunged it in. We had some after tea, yummy!
Leah sleeps ok til Christmas Eve lelly, it's school that's the problem, soon as the tree is up she doesn't want to go, afraid she's gona miss something I think!
Aw chezzabelle it's hard work having a shower when you're not well isn't it? So worth the effort when you're feeling all clean and human tho. :-)

Couldn't be further from the truth in our house! I have a tricky relationship with my parents, but actually get on really well with my mother-in-law. She's my biggest fan when it comes to baking whereas my own mum just tries to compete with me (she doesn't think I should be making this wedding cake, for example). It's a long story, but spent 6 months of the past two years in hospital and she's been much more supportive than my own parents. Sounds horrible for you, Nanny, especially when there's children involved. You'd think people could put children's needs before their own, but I guess we're not all that level headed.
Everyone's xmas trees look fabulous! Ours looks a bit bare in comparison, but might sneak some extra tinsel on when my husband's not looking. Love the little Starbuck's mug too, Nanny. So cute. I had a drink that looked just like that earlier today!
ASome day I will come on and you all will actually be talking about cakes :D:D:D
I have been busy with non cake stuff so unfortunately have only been a spectator. In amongst the madness I did a Spider-Man princess cake. Of course I saw the mistakes only, but here it is!

AEvening all :)
Nanny bless you that sounds awful for you and yes I agree with everyone else totally her loss ! I agree with Kathy on that quote. Although nice to hear your mother in law is a fan of yours sock, shame your mum doesn't support you bless you x
Tiddy hopefully that menopause will come quickly for you.
Newstreet your cake is great I can't see anything wrong there ;-)
Well I'm a broken woman from my Xmas do it has to be said Prosecco and I are no longer friends :-( been very poorly but finally getting my sorry act together now. Loads of pics from the night but won't bore you with loads but I will show you one..
Had a relaxing day and husband person looked after me well by doing the house work and cooking the roast .. I knew at that point I was feeling better as I had to interfere !! Am I the only wife that can't resist interfering when husbands are in the kitchen ?!

AForgot to say Nanny your cake was super fab. I love that affect on the board edge very nice.
Off to bed as my aching body can't cope anymore lol.
Night all x
AAhhh prosecco.....tis my downfall. But I won't be told. And Newstreet - I don't think we really do talk cake that often! I like yours though. What was supposed to be wrong with it cos I can't see it. Nice pic Jo!
I'm sooo lucky with my MIL. She really does treat me like a daughter. We do get on so well and I really love her.
So, this evening I've been baking the cookies which I'm going to decorate & personalise to use instead of name place cards at my son's Bar Mitzvah next weekend. I made 2 batches of cookie dough and used a half batch I had in the freezer. I got 133 cookies. I need 139! Typical!!!! LOL!!!
I'm going to make a small batch now (a third of a batch... it uses 3 eggs, so will do just 1 egg's worth) to do the rest - plus a few for spares, just in case.....
ALove your finished cake nanny. And newstreet yours is great too, you made two very different themes look good together.
Sorry to hear about the problems with your DIL nanny. I hate it when families don't get along its such a shame, she should be pleased Ioan has such loving grandparents. I get on really well with my MIL-to-be. In fact the whole family gets along so well er always go out together - my parents, my boyfriends parents and our brother/sister etc.
I've been attempting more Christmas shopping again today but afraid I got rather sidetracked by the Victorian Christmas market at the Lowry. Had a lovely pulled pork muffin! No presents bought though. Oh and a yummy brownie...
Glad Leah approves of my tree. Need to get the last bits up now cos they're driving me mad sat there waiting. I just can't seem to find the time.
I'm so stuck on what to buy my Dad for Christmas. I've got him some bits but I need a good present. He's so hard to buy for!
ASpeaking of presents, has any had a browse on notonthehighstreet.com? They have some pretty funky gifts on there but everyone is going absolutely mad for the chocolate sprouts this year, they can't keep up with demand. As soon as they have them back in stock they sell out again straight away. I've just been having a look at the photos and to me they just look like a chocolate truffle or even a cake pop would work, rolled in green chocolate/candy melts. The messiness makes them look like sprouts. Might have to have a go at this myself me thinks.
I wish I could read everything here since my last post. It's going to take an epic catch up! I'll save it for tomorrow's lunch break! :) I just wanted to show you guys some of the stuff I've done this weekend. My nephew had a school fair and I donated some stuff for it. Please excuse the really bad quality photos. I need a camera!
Here are some of the toppers because the quality of the other photo was so bad! I also made some chocolate and peppermint yuletide logs with sugar mushrooms. I ended up going with the peppermint buttercream in the end because it tasted so yummy! I didn't get a photo of it fully decorated but here you go:
And then my first time making gingerbread houses. I'll admit it was 3am by this time and I stopped caring. I would have put more effort into it if it was earlier and I was less grumpy. Again sorry for the shoddy quality:
On top of this I had a Frozen cake order too! I made the Elsa out of fondant. She's turned out frumpier than what I would have liked and she has a rather grumpy look on her face but I think I will do a better job next time!
Can somebody please advise on how I can obtain licensing permission to use Disney material. I didn't this time and I only, naively, recently realised you need permission before selling the product and I really don't want to cheat next time.
Happy baking everyone!
AMorning all. Blimey Suzanne - you are super organised - can't wait to see the finished job. Love the idea of cookies as place settings. Sugar - I love the sound of a Victorian Xmas market (and a pulled pork muffin. I've used notonthehighstreet.com for nursery gifts and I got the flyer about the sprouts and in the picture they don't look unachievable.
Smysha - you've been busy! I like the way you did your frozen cake. I don't think Disney ever license cake decorators to reproduce their images so we all take a chance really. I think it's fine if you buy properly licensed figures though and put them on the cake. Kathy
morning ladies :)
I am off to the quack today
Smysha you have been very busy! thats a lovely frozen cake :)
morning all,
Jo, fab picture! No wonder you're poorly
Suzanne, I can't imagine decorating that many cookies. I've seen some very elaborate ones
Newstreet, lovely cakes!
Sugarluva, I thought you meant proper sprouts covered in chocolate. I was quite disgusted until I read the rest of your post LOL. Can't help with your dad's presents, I get stuck on what to get hubby every single flipping year. What makes it hard is that his birthday is the middle of november, so not long after his birthday I'm having to think of a present again!! At least with me it's all in one go- my birthday is boxing day. I remember when I was young I frequently got one present - the tag always said merry christmas and happy birthday.
Smysha, you busy bee! I'd devour the other log, I don't like mint in my cakes and chocs! So just send the other one off to me. Don't worry about Elsa- she is the snow queen after all! You've made lovely cakes. I tried that wavy effect with fondant before, bit difficult but managed in the end!
Tiddy, good luck at the doctor's x
Hi all and morning
Hope everyone is well and doing ok, I've been so busy I've not had a chance to get on my laptop to catch up. I now have over 20 pages of chatter to catch up on. I will try to read through all the posts later on when I've done my running around.
ASomething wrong with my tablet, grrr, not connecting to WIFI. Right, busy day, going to see ioan's Concert, booked the day off, first gotta go cake shop, get all my wedding bits and bobs.x
AMorning all. :-)
Lovely cake newstreet, you've done a good job putting the two themes together, I think it's fab. How's your daughter? Does she like Christmas and get excited?
Great picture Jo, looks like you had a lot of fun!
Good luck at the doctors tiddy. x
Blimey smysha, you've been busy! It's all lovely but especially the toppers and the frozen cake is gorgeous. I lovethe ruffles. I wanted to try ruffles on my SIL's true live party cake but she said no. And screwed her face up like I'd suggested a Halloween theme or something! It doesn't apply to me cos I don't sell cakes but from what I've read Disney just don't give permission full stop. I think it's ridiculous tbh. I've heard all the arguments and I see everyone's points but the bottom line for me is they market stuff for kids, they advertise during children's programmes, they get every little girl in the land wanting the latest Disney princess film and every boy the latest Pixar film, charge us a fortune for the merchandise to go with it but them won't let them have a cake for their birthday party. They can have the plates, cups, tablecloths, party bags etc, but not a cake. I don't think that's fair.
I had a look at those sprouts sugarluva, they look like good stocking fillers. When my son was 11 or 12 he and his friends went trick or treating to quite a posh street. He said thean came to the door with a big tray of ferrero rocher. They all took one, he was quite excited cos he'd never had one before. They opened them and it was a (real) sprout! He was gutted but they soon saw the funny side! He's 20 now and it's a good memory for him. Every year since I've wanted to do that (to the older kids) but I'm not brave enough! :-D
Is your tablet sorted now then nanny? Enjoy the concert. :-)
Aw Jean I wouldn't like a birthday that close to Christmas. My mams is in January and she said it was good sometimes cos if she wanted something really big she'd ask for it for Christmas and birthday. She'd get it for Christmas and still have a birthday present. She was spoilt mind!
Hope I haven't missed anyone.
Oops, nearly! Hi roxy, nice to see you. :-)
Hi ladies :)
I am none the wiser!
Doctor looked at me and says "have you done a test?" I repeat that I was sterilised and she repeats the question! So I say how likely is that?! To which she replies..."uncommon but not unheard of...ive seen it before" ...frigging fab for you love!!
She then tells me I am too young for menopause! woah no i am not!...........the end result was her telling me to go buy a test as they could do a blood test but i will then have to wait for the results!
So into the chemist i go again...lady behind counter goes into hysterics when i tell her and says "happy xmas justin!" I did not laugh!....test done again and negative again! Doctors says to wait another month and retest if it comes back negative! wtf!
So I am now just going to ignore all that , assume i'm menopausal and get on with it

On the upside, hardly anyone ever forgets when it is LOL
I've just been to lakeland- they are having some sales on- buy one get one half price on cake tins, £5 for two candy melts, etc etc. I've just seen some tip covers (for lack of a better description) there which you use to cover tips to stop the icing from setting. Great when doing RI work!
I've got a tip for those busy bakers out there who have only one mixer- I read a review by the Royal Bakery (based in the US) about plastic containers that go inside a cake mixer. You use them as extra mixer bowls and they come with lids. I could do with them because I only have one mixer and one mixer bowl and I definitely could do with extra. I can't remember what they're called though.
AThose tip covers sound good Jean. My gran's birthday was 20th Dec, she loved it, it was like the official start of Christmas at her house. It was one long celebration from them til new year. I'm getting all nostalgic now. :-)
Aw tiddy that's no use is it? I thought there wS a test they could do now to see how close you are to the menopause. And if she won't rule pregnancy out cos it's unusual but not unheard of how can she rule the menopause out? You are young, it is unusual........ But not unheard of. And what about the pain? Did she offer an explanation for that? Something I saw on FB the other day: MENstruation, MENopause, MENtal illness. All women's problems start with men! :-D
They sure do Maisie!
nope no answers very frustrating but guess time will now tell lol
AHaha maisie that is so cruel. Sprouts disguised at Ferrero Roche. I'd be gutted too! Although now it's got me thinking that could be a fun joke for Xmas too...
I might try my hand at chocolate Sprouts. So far all I've done whilst shopping is come up with more ideas of things I could make. Yesterday at the market I saw (and sampled) mince pie liquer (which when I enquired about it is just mince pie flavoured vodka) and thought to myself Ooh I bet that wouldn't be hard to make at home. I then saw pint pots of Guinness filled with Guinness fudge which I considered as a small gift for my dad because he loves Guinness but they were £10 and again I thought I bet they're not hard to make! So my list of things I need to try and make just keeps getting longer and my 'to buy' list no shorter. Oh I also saw mini gingerbread houses that you sit on the edge of a mug of hot chocolate... I need to get baking!

I thought there was too, through blood tests. I was told couldn't have them because if you take the pill it skews the results. I think I was about 30 when I asked for it, but they just wanted to wait and see what happened too. Most GPs seem to have this "watch and wait" attitude, which doesn't really help when you're really worried about something. Sorry to hear you're none the wiser, Tiddy :(.
Tiddy, what a bummer! I guess there is little choice now but to wait a bit more and see the doctor after a few weeks. Good that the test came out negative though as that's what you'd prefer :)
Maisie, haha sprouts!! So true about the 'men' LOL
Sugarluva, what a coincidence! When I went to Lakeland I saw them selling boxes of sprout shaped chocs at the counter! It's really fun trying to make all your presents, it's just the lack of time to make them in that's so frustrating! I'm sticking to what I know- sponge cakes, banana cakes, brownies and cookies!
Does anyone know what the cut off is for royal mail deliveries for packages? I can't decide when to bake the goods that I'm going to post- I don't want it too early but not so late that I don't make the delivery!
Chezza, good to know you're up and about. Best thing really- get the blood circulating and all that! Can't imagine being in that much pain and having young uns to tend to though!
I hope they work ok! Gingerbread sounds good
Just taken a red velvet out the oven, and it's looking a tad too brown :/ Used Sugarflair Xmas Red, but think I will have to get some red extra. Does anyone know if that tastes funny when used in large qty?
Hi Mel, I use a heaped tea spoon of Red extra. You can't taste it and while it isn't bright red it's definitely red. I also use cider vinegar and buttermilk. I believe there is some sort of colouring reaction that goes on as a result of using these two ingredients? I can't remember!
That's exactly what I thought!
Nanny, I hear you talking about your grandson a lot on here and I assume you take care of him. You do all of that and she acts so ungratefully? And stopping you from seeing your grandson? That is so unbelievably low. He is a child and not some sort of wagering tool. I'm sorry if I sound harsh but reading all of that actually made me mad. I come from a big family. I have two sisters and one brother all married with 9 kids in between them and I understand how it can be when one person doesn't get along with everyone else.
Tiddy I hope you're feeling better now and find out what's wrong with you soon!
Thanks for the cake love people! I am not hugely in love with the Frozen cake but it's done now! I'm preparing myself for the 60 cupcakes I have to make for next Monday. All with toppers like the ones I've shown here. Oh God! I'm loving all the Christmas trees! I've celebrated Christmas a few times and have always bought a real tree in when I do. That smell is so heavenly! We never celebrated it at home but we get two Eids so I'm not complaining! :D
