@Tiddylicious  Have you seen this https://www.facebook.com/sturdycakestackers  looks really good.  Think I'd trust it more than the cake frame fro a straight stacked cake.  Think I might get this for my wedding cake in march :)

Yeah they were at CI, wish I had of blooming seen them, would of saved a few quid. But for 4 tier cake, 12 to 6 inch with all the pre cut boards and whatnot its £20.20, that's not bad.  I'd spend that on knowing it wont topple when I have to drive it 45 mins to hotel, then store it overnight, then 20 mins to venue in the morning.  Its got to be worth it :)

ATiddy I think mrs Gray might have a problem with me being Grape leader, come to think of it she might have a problem with Grapies full stop! Sorry to hear you've had a hard time on FB. I've had a look at a couple of those groups and I don't like them much. I do like that I can enlarge the pictures on my phone but that's about it. They seem a bit, I don't even know! Not a serious cake forum if you know what I mean. People are either being downright rude or telling each other their cakes are wonderful when anyone can see they're awful. I know we're not serious a lot if the time but we are when we need to be, when it comes to one of us having a problem and everyone helping. I feel like I've learned so much on here but I don't think I'd learn anything on those. Does that even make sense?

Why aren't you happy with your flowers nanny? I bet there's nothing wrong with them.

They'll understand Siany, it's not as if they didn't have any if you there is it.

AOh I don't know Maisie, they just don't look like they belong on a wedding cake, this is for a 2nd marriage, not that it make any difference, but I guess it isn't a grand as a tired cake i guess, and the fact that she is gonna plonk a ruddy bride and groom in the middle and probably a pair of those short fat sturdy types, abit like me really, ha ha, god I laughed at myself there!

AShort fat and sturdy?! Now nanny you know I know that's not true!

I think that's your problem you know, I think you're looking at it and not seeing a wedding cake because it's not a tiered cake.

White leaves sound nice actually - if it needs leaves. How done is it? Show us a pic if you can.

Speaking of which I do believe there's a bus from Bridgend due soon isn't there?

Glad it made sense roxy. I love this thread and everyone on here.

AI'd leave leaves off nanny. On a wedding cake personally I think it looks better to have the colours nice and crisp on their own, green 'muddys' it imho.

Thanks all, they seem to be ok and it went well, they were last out so had to wait backstage for an hour and a half so that sucked for them, they are shattered now bless them.

I'd be happy to go xmas day for the results of it meant they could tell me what's wrong. If it is what they think now it's surgery to fix it :/

Me too but it's been 13 months so I don't expect any miracles. Having my hip joint filled with contrast fluid seems to have aggravated it somewhat though.

AIt's sitting in my conservatory, and when the heating off and I shut the doors it's like a fridge in there.

Not done yet maisie, just made 4 panels of cake lace, really just waiting for it to all firm up then will finish it off tomorrow, has to be done tomorrow for her to pick it up Thurs eve, i'm in work all day Thurs. Your probably right I don see it as a wedding cake as it's only a single tier, and the fact I had to work around the centre for the tacky bits to go on, grrrrgrrrr.

AOMG you lot!! Have you all been on the chatty pills again? :D

I'd say I'll try and catch up, but it'll take me a week and then I'll be behind again! I've had a quick skim, so here's what I've managed to remember so far:

Gray! Soo excited to see the globe cake - you're one brave man, that would terrify me! Oh and if the cat bed is the wooly one with the silver layer in, I think that was me, and if so I'm glad your little guy likes it, I hope it helps! Our fur ball is loving hers at the moment, it's positioned on a footstool next to the radiator, so veeeery toasty!

Kathy, did I spot that Mr Kathy got the all clear? Fab news for you all! How are you getting on with chocolate Ariel?

Lizzy, how are you! Dare I ask about the builder or shall I assume he's still being as helpful as ever? :/ Hope you're all ok x

Suzanne, oh dear poor you! Is your kitchen drowning in lists yet? If not, take a moment, make a cuppa and make a timeline. I do that all the time when I'm trying to fit a zillion things in. Even if it's just to give me a vague starting point, at least that way I can't forget to do something.

Tiddy, omg I love the Teddy Elvis, can't wait to see him!

Nanny, love your cakes, really like the starry tree, so effective! Hope gumpaste John feels better soon (and keeps his lurgy away from you!) :)

Siany, did I miss you hurting your leg? Hope you feel better soon, sounds like the right call to stay home if you aren't sure about driving though.

Sock (seemingly my autocorrect is happy with that!) how are you getting on with the chocolate cake? Was it you that asked about servings? I'd say a 6", 8" & 10" will be more than enough for between 75-100. That's my usual size for clients asking for 90-100 servings. Don't forget not all the cake will get eaten, and not all invitees will even go, so I don't actually think you will need a cutting cake? Just my opinion though x

Not sure who asked about buttercream but I always use unsalted butter, and never any marg type product, and I use a 1:2 ratio of butter to sugar. You need the high butterfat in proper butter to get it to whip up properly :)

For labelling (sorry I'm not sure of your name!) when you register Trading Standards should get in touch to arrange an appointment, or you can just call them to ask advice? Mine said what Maisie's already mentioned, that as long as you've got things listed in a place they can see it's ok. Because I bake to order, and don't prepack it's slightly different. I have a statement in my Ts and Cs, and then also list allergens on the delivery paperwork.

Hello to all newbies, I'm sure I'll catch up with you soon!

Argh giant post alert, sorry guys!

Can anyone offer some advice re airbrushes? I have one... I bought it second hand from a cake-acquaintance. I presume the quality is more to do with the brush-end of things rather than the generator? I confess I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with it... but the finish it gives is SOOOO splattery. Rather than a lovely even finish (no matter how close or far I am) it spatters. Any ideas? I don't know what air-brush gun bit it is, but perhaps I should invest in a new one (keeping the generator?)

Suze, if it's splattering you need to give it a good clean.

Run some hot water through it, or if you have it, airbrush cleaner and that should stop the splattering :)

Hi Mel37 - Thanks for the labelling info - great feedback - very helpful.

Can I clarify with the buttercream comment that I made earlier. I am fully aware that nearly all bakers use a 1:2 ratio and also that nearly all bakers use butter instead of margarine and that this seems to be the norm in cake world. Even Mary Berry does too, so I am not professing to know any better - please don't get me wrong - I am just happy and so are my customers with Debbie Brown's buttercream recipe and it works for us.

Btw - having never been to CI before - that Cake Stackers webpage looks pretty good - has anyone here tried using the cake stackers method. We have our first wedding cake mid December and thought it may be a good idea !

Suzanne if running water or airbrush cleaner through the airbrush doesn't work then you need to take the gun apart and give it a proper clean. It's easy to do, if you type it into google you will be able to find a video showing how to do it. If you can't find any let me know and I will scan the instructions off mine for you, our guns won't be exactly the same but would be similar enough that you could figure it out. What brand do you have?

AMmm, nasty toppers are almost as bad as candles aren't they nanny. Try to put that out of your mind. Imagine the space is going to be for a beautiful spray or a fabulous bow. I'm sure you're worrying needlessly, it's going to be beautiful.

Suzanne I am the proud owner of an airbrush too. :-D But all I've done is take it out of the box and put it back in so I can't help you I'm afraid.

Hi mel, nice to see you. :-)

I'm off to bed now, I'm going in to Leah's school tomorrow to make cupcakes with the kids. I've been really looking forward to it but I'm a bit nervous now. Night all. :-)

Thanks, ladies.

I have absolutely no idea what make they are...  the box for the compressor doesn't even have a make!!  There's a model number - I'll see what I can find if I Google it...

This looks like it (without the manufacturer name on the side)

http://www.airbrushsupplyonline.com/compressors/min-baby-elephant-airbrush-compressor-as-16-oil-free

So not the most expensive of models, LOL!  No idea at all what the airbrush/gun bit is, though.  I'll take it apart and give it a clean tomorrow.

Here's what it's doing....

It's a surfboard....  I can get away with pretending it's the effect I was after, right??????

I think it looks cool like that Suzanne you can get away with that. The airbrush being small will probably have a similar gun to mine as mine is small let me know if you need the instructions.

AYou can definitely get away with that Suzanne, it looks like it's a very technically tricky effect!

We have a brilliant airbrushing shop near us (I really want to do one of their classes) and the chap there told me that Iwata is the best for cake work. Apparently there are different ones for different applications. Who knew eh? I just have one on my wish list as they're about £100 each - I figure if I ever take the classes and work out how to airbrush well it'll be worth it, but right now it would be like giving a monkey an expensive toy

What's wrong with your leg Siany (of you don't mind me asking)? It sounds pretty nasty if you've had it for that long and are having contrast mri's :-(

Hi Mel! How're you? You did a great big post and didn'tsay what you'd been up to :-) Builders are an off topic for me - after tonight's email we may be looking at court
