AWow jo I love your zebra stripes! Both cakes are fab but that's my favourite. :-) Loving the boards btw. :-)
Hi Kathleen, I was just going to ask if you're up making cakes too but then I realised you're in Australia!
Look what I've done, I can't quite believe it!
It went on first time, no rips, tears, lumps, bumps or elephant skin. I'm delighted! :-D And it's Renshaws!!!!!!!!!
AThanks Kathleen and Maisie!
The stripes were so much easier than I thought maisie once you get going it's easy - just scary at first !
Well done on yours it's fab ! I used renshaws on my 80's cake it was great to work with but my cake was chilled and I found it sweated a lot once covered I think due to the condensation!
I think when I have daylight my cakes might look better. I must say though I'm shattered, really had enough of cake decorating for a while now !
AJo there's really nothing wrong with them. You're worse than me mun. :-)
I'm tired now too, happy tho. I don't understand it cos I hate Renshaws. Whatever the reason I'm happy. I'll have to use it again now to see if it was just a fluke or if I magically get on with Renshaws now.
I'm off to bed now. Night Jo, night everyone. X
Lol that's correct Maisie, in Sydney at the moment but heading back to London in 3 weeks.
Once I'm back I'll be attempting my first Christmas cake - eeeeek!
Does anyone have any recommendations for the best place to get marzipan from?
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome :)
Kathleen
AAw i'm with you with the lighting suzanne, good job there's filters etc on modern phones now eh.
Ktm1980. Good luck with your first xmas cake, do you have any ideas for the decoration.
Maisie, perfect did you airbrush. Spray with the red? Or plain old colour the sp? What you did you got a good result, and your a Renshaws convert now then. As you know I never have probs with it apart from my disastrous birdcage, blamed many things for that one.
Yes i'm happy with the cake, just hate the colour, she wanted it light grey, so I bought the pearlised spray in the shop, but it turned it from a very light grey to what I can only call it, an odd shade go green, well, thats what it looks like to me, maybe it's the lighting, got to be honest, I loathe decorating cakes at night without natural light, and obviously i'm tired as in work till 5.30, oh yes and i'm OLD!
So here it is with its strange colour, and if i'm honest which I didn't think about, and because i'd already cut them out, given the fact that most of the logo's got red on them I wished i'd done the same for everything else instead of the bloody pink, grrrr
AOh, sorry jo, what's on earth is wrong with those cakes. I can't see why you don't like them, we are never happy are we.
Forgot to say maisie, so lovely if you to make your friend a cake, and a ninja giant cupcake at that, 2 cakes this weekend, wow maisie, go girl!
Tidds, sounds like a good plan going on there, when you said about the colours over coffee the other day I did wonder, but they're starting to sound okay together now, when is this for?
As you can all see i'm very chatty this morning as it's very early, day off and i'm up at 5.45, typical, still was going to marip an my 3 xmas cakes, yes I know it's early but need to get them out of the way tbh, as still got a fair few cakes between now and xmas.
Hi Nanny!
Loving the cake! The colour of the cake looks grey to me :)
I'm planning on a 2 tier, 6" and 8" (with the top tier a dummy, and the bottom a fruit cake). I'm going to be rather ambitious and attempt a design I've sketched, mostly handpainting - eeeek! I'll post a photo in a few weeks once its done.
Kathleen
ADo you think so ktm1980? Hopefully just the lighting then, lol,
Is your cake for you? Or a customer?
Well up and early has defo been good for me this morn, i'very only just gone and marizpaned 3 xmas cakes, 8" and 2 6", word of waring tho, I bought Sainsbury own white marizpan, absolutely no taste of almond whatsoever so I added my own extracut and kneaded it in.
These cakes are, 1 for us, 1 for SIL, and 1 for DIL.
AMorning !
Well thanks for kind comments on my cakes, i'm not happy with the flower one i think the purple should of been darker bit was trying to match with the board ribbon.
Nanny o love your cake what is used to make the pearly effect around the balls ? Pearly balls oo - er !
Quick and novice question, I want purple buttercream can I just add progel to it ?
AYes jo, I use them all the time, I think they are so good, even coloured my 12" dartboard cake black, all by myself.
Thanks jo, too late to change anything on there now. I bought the PME spray in Pearlised, it does give a nice effect I think, it was my first time to use it.
Yes definitely Nanny, it looks a light grey to me :) Wowzers! You're up very early and have marzipaned cakes already.
The Christmas cake I want to make is just for my family until I get brave enough to start selling!
AMorning all :-)
Kathy, is everything OK with your house? I've just read that your alarm went off, I hope you found it was just a glitch?
Toddy, love the snowman cake :-)
Poor everyone having bad days yesterday, hopefully it's all better now!? Awesome cakes Jo!
Chezza, gingerbread - mine always puffs up (I do the boys a house each to decorate each year). If I'm using templates I quickly re-cut around them when it comes out, whilst it's still warm. If you're using cutters it's even easier, just use them to recut. You'll have perfect edges and some very tasty shards of offcuts to munch :-)
@Suzanne, I *hated* gu10 bulbs too (cannot stand the warm light you get from normal lights), so we've changed all ours in the kitchen and the back extension to led daylight ones. Honestly, they're lovely. You need to look for a temperature of around 4000-4500 kelvin. We use led hut (go through topcashback as they normally have a good cashback for them). The ones we use are 4 watts which is a 50w equivalent, so it saves a butt ton of electricity too (we have 21 downlights in those two areas!). Have a look, it might stop divorce proceedings ;-)
Your cake looks great maisie, no one but us will know the trouble you had :-D
Another beautifully executed cake nanny, I wish I was as neat as you!

Has anyone cut a 3mm cake board before? Bought one to cut to a number one shape, but it's VERY thick...
Sian, love the house. I've got the same mould and am going to be doing them too! Did you use chocolate? That's what I'm using as I have a ton :-) Also got the mini ones as I thought they'd be cool for stocking fillers :-D Have you filled it with sweets? I was thinking of doing a version like a pinata with some after dinner chocs in it.
I was up at 3.30 yesterday morning (after getting to bed at half midnight) taking our eldest to school for a trip to Belgium so I was crackered all day. I am so not a morning person!
In the last couple of days I've gone from just having my wedding cake this month (and being perfectly happy with that what with all the other stuff going on) to having an x-box controller, a 60th anniversary and a 40th birthday on the 5th,6th and 7th :-/ They're all for friends and family so I couldn't say no. Damn my mouth saying yes when my head is saying 'what the hell are you doing??'.
Hello Kathleen, looking forward to seeing your cake when it's done, it sounds lovely! I think it was you who asked about marzipan? I researched a bit when I used it a couple of months ago and going by the almond content alone, tesco won. I used to buy the expensive ones online - but the almond content was only 1% more in them (some were the same) and they were double the price. Tesco/waitrose/asda/sainsbury were all the same percentage (at the time anyway) and tesco was cheapest. Almond content might not be the way to judge them, but as a marzipan hater it was the only way I could think of to find a good one.
Morning all
Right, finally got the laptop back and had a catch up and guess what....forgotten most of it already
Ok .... Jo Love your cakes, especially the zebra! Looks fab!
Is there a newbie amongst us that ive missed? Hi ktm, I love painting on cake so cant wait to see yours.
Maisie!!!!! What did we tell you! Looks fab! I hope thats helped the little confidence monkey in there I also don't get on with renshaws but thats because i have hot hands. Maybe as its been so cold it worked better for you? Or maybe you are just good at this but would never believe us if we said that cant wait to see it finished....did nanny say you were ninja'ing? haha!
Nanny! Been waiting to see this and its fab as per doesn't look green to me so maybe the light. Pearly colours are hard to capture in photos! Were the print outs ok? I know you were worried.....oh and p.s. you are not old!!!!!
Right off to take some pain relief...blooming dodgy neck is killing me today
AMorning all. :-)
Nanny it's brilliant. Tbh I thought it was grey. When you said it looks green I had another look and it might be ever so slightly green tinged. It could be the light tho, even this morning there's no morning light is there? I looked at it and I saw a CD. I think the red circle in the middle being different to the pink makes it look like more like a CD, looks like you did it on purpose. :-) And you're not old!
I used Renshaws poppy red nanny. I liked the idea of using the airbrush but I don't think the first time I use it shoukd be on an actual cake. I think I should practise on an old bit of SP first. The spray was my plan B, pound a tin would've been rude to leave it there!
Thankyou nanny and chezzabelle. :-) I'll take a "perfect" from the sugarpaste queen. :-D it's not but it's the best I've ever done and every time I look at it (which is quite often!) I want to do a little happy dance!
Marzipan Kathleen, I just buy tesco's own because that's where I shop. I love marzipan. I was looking at the white in Hobbycraft yesterday nanny, glad I didnt pick it up now.
Jo I didn't even notice your flowers were different to your ribbon. All the colours go together lovely.
Morning everyone! Loving the cakes ladies - Jo: those look great - nothing wrong with them at all. Barbara: actually I don't think writing in red would have added anything - I quite like the pink.
Gray - relieved to hear the cake got there in one piece - where's the photo then??? (Yes - I'm all about the pics, no shirking....that doesn't really work but think Megan Trainor!).
Hi Lizzie - yes - the alarm was weird - my sister said hers did that when a spider walked over it - now I'm looking for the "beast" because it has to have been a big one Sounds like you've racked up a few gears then! I also like Tesco marzipan and might go and try to get some later because they keep selling out round my way.
Suzanne - I completely get what you are saying and let me say (Gray and M4rvel cover your ears) - I think it's a bloke thing - lighting and heating, that is. My DH changed the kitchen downlighters to LEDs but the undercupboard ones we can't get in LED form. So for the first few months I had this terrible "clash" going on. I hate it. In fact, I can't do any cake work in the evenings now - because my head is banging by the end of it. He doesn't see the problem. However, if the bills come down (last year for the winter we had combined bills of £900 and both our kids were still at uni then) then I guess we will not be going back.
Well if coughing was an Olympic sport - I'd be on the podium. I am so darn tired. My cough linctus seemed to make it worse! Going to make my sponges for the Little Mermaid cake today and freeze them. I am going to try to model her later - don't laugh - haven't done any modelling since Sophie was 2 when I did Postman Pat for her! (Sophie is 22 now!).
Kathy
Maisie - how on earth did I miss the cake?? No idea - but I can see why you want that tin. Looking very good.
And I missed Nanny saying she was old???? Really??? Rubbish!
Kathy
AWhere did nanny say she was old?? We've seen photos, you don't get away with that sort of nonsense nanny!
Omg Kathy, how big would that spider have to be to set the alarm off!? I suppose on the bright side, he could fight off any potential burglars for you
AI missed loads then!
Thanks Kathy, nanny and tiddy. :-) Yes tiddy nanny said I was ninja-ing. That was me last night, I felt like a ninja for a minute there! But I went from ninja to ninja tortoise in the space of one post! Now I've had a bit of sleep I'm thinking the cakes not finished yet, loads could still go wrong and here I am, feeling all pleased with myself. Shouldn't count my chickens really should I. You could be right about that tiddy, I didn't gave my heating on while Leah was at school yesterday, when I wasn't doing anything I was cold.
Yeah Lizzy nanny said she was old. She said it yesterday but I didn't even dignify it with a response. She doesn't look at all old, her skin is beautiful and hardly any wrinkles. I'm well jell!
I know Lizzy- to be honest I think it scares me more just thinking about it. Anyway - off to do some chores but thought I would share this as if any of you are like me and need to shift a few pounds and have done Slimming World too - then this will be an amusing few minutes. Another Let it Go tribute:
Hope that worked!
See you all later!
Kathy

My ninja tortoise cake. :-D
AThanks all for grey/green cake comments.
Yes tidds, I had 6 small logo's and a large one for the middle, I cut around the big logo for the middle abit tricky but I managed it ok.
Lizzy, you, not neat? Kidding me or what? We're seen your cakes don't forget.
Just yours now maisie, hardest part is done, plain sailing now, should be fab.
Gotta be honest I wouldn't practise on a proper cake with airbrushinge until I know it looked perfect, I airbrushed the board last week and was distraught it was the wrong pink, so I quickly dusted it with Antique silk and it was fine, defo need abit of practise with it.
ALove the cupcake maisie, it's one cake i havnt tried to make yet, got the tin, just not an order for one.
Ta maisie, makeup/ grout is a wonderful invention, does wonders for the wrinkles.
Ok, ok, maybe not so old, definitely mature! At least I can thank my mam for one thing, she gave me good skin, lol.
Lizzybug87 – Thanks for the marzipan tip, Tesco’s marzipan it is! J Wow, 3 cakes in a week!
Tiddylicious – Thank you :) I’m not the best at painting so I’m not expecting too much! Ha ha. Hope your neck feels better soon.
Hi Kathy, glad your alarm was just a glitch! Sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well. Looking forward to seeing your mermaid :). Ha ha thanks for the link… “I wish that biscuits were syn free” hee hee
Maisie – Love love the cupcake :)
Have a good day everyone!
Kathleen
AWhTve I missed? Lizzy said she's not neat? Eh?! Your cakes are gorgeous Lizzy!
Thanks nanny and tiddy. It was thrown together, a bit last minute (for me) so that's where the ninja came from. Still slow for most peoples "last minute" hence the tortoise.
You should make one nanny, they're easy. Soon as I made one everybody wanted one.
Lmao nanny, only cakey peeps would know "distraught" cos you got the wrong colour is not an exaggeration! :-D Are those edible images easy to put on?
AYes maisie, they come on a piece of plastic, not sure what everyone else does but I slide my pallette knife under them, then carefully cut around them.
