ABlimey, I've missed loads!

Jean I was on the cake decorating company website earlier and it said at the too of the page free P&P on orders over £25 so I think it's automatic.

Gray that cake is brilliant! I love it. I wish I could paint like that. I can't even colour in (in a book) without going outside the lines!

Roxy I'm pretty sure I've got that book. If you'd like it you're welcome to it. I've read it once, it's just dumped somewhere gathering dust now.

Sugarluva I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like Oreos!

Cake looks yummy Jean, can't wait to see it finished. Maybe your husband knows it's for him and he's having private fun at your expense?! :-D

Gotta go, sorry if I've missed anyone. Busy, busy, busy!

Chezza- When I fell in love with cake decorating I knew I wanted it to become a business (before I knew how tough it was to get business from it LOL) but I wanted to get to the point where my fondant cake covering was as perfect as possible and that I'd made at least one tiered cake. When I achieved those skills I started the business.

The photos from CI are fabulous- Sian, Barbara, Marvel and Tiddy you guys look fabulous and I can imagine how wonderful it must have been to see everyone in person.

The cakes at the show are stunning! Tiddy, was the heart one with the word 'crazy' on it an actual entry?

Hubby's cake is out of the oven. It is Paul Bradford's recipe, tweaked a little, and boy is it yummy! If I didn't stop eating the batter there wouldn't have been any left for his cake. Because I wasn't sure how much rise there would be in the cake, I filled the pan to 2/3 full or a little over and this is what I got.

I've been a bit silly, because I forgot that I am still torting and filling, so might have to chop some of hte top off so the cake isn't too high (It's going to be a ferrari). If the batter is anything to go by, I can't wait to try it on Saturday!

Jean,  what size tin is that you are using?  Did you just use the ingredients as listed or did you scale them up?  I have to make a cake for my Debbie Brown course on Monday and was going to try this one as PB says its good for carving.  Thanks

AMaisie I'm actually not a fan of Oreos normally myself. But these cupcakes are delicious, so chocolatey.

Oh and whilst I remember, do you, or anyone else, have a good chocolate mud cake recipe you wouldn't mind sharing? Pwetty pwease? :D

So whoever it was that suggested oreo cupcakes thank you! They've shot to the top of my favourite flavours list now.

Is that the cupcakes with Oreo on the base? What flavour cupcake did you do in the end? I think a couple of us suggested Oreos about the same time - I could just eat one now!

A quick question - how often do people "feed" their xmas cakes with alcohol? I've been feeding mine once a week with a tbsp of brandy and so far I think it's had four "feeds". I read something that said putting too much alcohol in afterwards could cause the cake to crumble when cut. I can't remember what I've done in the past, so I'm possibly overthinking it because I don't think I've ever had a cake that's crumbled. Making my xmas puddings later this week, so soaked more fruit in special sherry (it's so special, I'm not sure there'll be any left by xmas, ooops!)

I feed mine about once a week same as you for about 4 weeks. I would think over doing it would make the cake go "pudding-like" rather than crumbly.

AYes I've got a delicious mud cake recipe sugarluva. I'll PM you, later when Leah's in bed unless I get five minutes before.

Sockmonkey I don't usually make my cakes too far in advance, I always mean to but it's usually December by the time I get round to it. I feed them a couple if times a week then, I don't usually pay much attention to how often, I've always thought more is better, never heard of too much making them crumbly. I've never made a Christmas pudding! That's terrible isn't it?! I'd love to have a go though, Mmm, I love Christmas pudding.

Roxy I found that book on my bookcase. (Sounds daft but I've more books scattered everywhere else than I have in my bookcase) :-) it says 2011 revised edition on the front.

Maisie, LOL if he is still here tomorrow I will kick him out sharpish!

Siany, I used my smallest sheet tin- 9x13. I made the full recipe by paul- no scaling up or down because it was flippin difficult to figure out how to translate batter for a 10" round into a 9x13 sheet. I used roughly 2/3 of the mixture and it reached the top of the tin so it is 3" high. I added vanilla essence (2-3 tsp I think- didn't measure, just poured!!) to the recipe (that, and the fact that I only had caster sugar rather than golden caster, was the only tweak I made!) because I felt it needed it. Can't wait to see what you do in the cake class.

Sock Monkey- I am a fruit cake virgin, but for years helped my mom make them. She 'bathed' the cakes after they were cooled in brandy- put the brandy in a big roasting tin, dunked each side of each cake in the brandy, then wrapped in plastic. She only did this once for each cake.

Tiddy, thanks for the code!! So handy right now. Ooooh bake drop- which one did you choose?

Sugar, don't know if Paul's cake is a mud cake but you could try that. So far, so delicious!

ASugarluva I was going to put it in the bakers clan but it's already on there. Tiddy's put the link on there, it's the one I use too. Gray's put a white chocolate one on there too, looks yum! I always have a problem with cracking on the top or it splitting when I tort it but they're common problems with mud cakes i think. I haven't tried it since I've had my agbay or bake even strips tho. Maybe I should.

Sockmonkey yes it is the one with a whole oreo in the base. The cupcake is chocolate flavoured too and I'm going to make the frosting with crushed Oreos in tomorrow as well - with a mini oreo on top!

AQuick question about the mud cake, if I bake in a 9 inch round tin as suggested how high do they normally rise to? Thanks! Sounds delicious.

I thought more was better too, but then Googled it. That was probably my mistake. I've never heard about crumbling cake until now, so maybe it's just someone talking rubbish. I'll probably cover them early-mid December because one needs to go to my mother-in-law before xmas day. I made Delia Smith's xmas pudding two years ago, which was super rich, but very nice. I'm trying Nigella's this year which has this special sherry (tastes like a cross between treacle and sherry) and vodka.

I'm just imagining bathing in brandy now. Sounds lovely... Like Cleopatra, but boozier.

Catsmum I have looked at the lindy smith spacers they are 10cm longer than mine so I might get them soon, I think the cake shop I go to now and again sells the long ones and I have some gift cards that Mr Roxy got me a while ago to spend there so I will try there first.

I only have the free videos on the PB site so can't watch the car video. I have downloaded a blue print type picture of the batmobile, it has a view from the side , top, back and front but are all on one page I would love some advice on how to do it to scale. Also do you start by cutting the side shape first or use the top template to cut first?

Petitecat thanks for the sizes of the tin I will have a look through mine and see which will work best. I posted a code for the cake decorating company a couple of days ago but it was for 20% off not delivery, the code was   ilovecakedec  not sure if it is still valid though.

Oh Siany  how exciting can't wait to see you kittens cake and your Cinderella cake Catsmum.

Awww Maisie that's so nice of you I wouldn't feel right taking it off you though and you never know one day you may need it. I have reserved it from the library. How do you find the bake even strips Maisie I've used towels a few times.

Grey I have just ordered the mini mat from the cake decorating company and with the 20% of it was only £10.10 with 1-2 days delivery.

Chezzabelle I have also been looking at the mat for ages and have just decide to buy the mini mat to see if I like that before paying out for the bigger one, the small one can then be used for small projects and to keep petals etc from drying out when doing flowers.

Uk bakers clan is a webpage that Tiddy set up for us, we can chat on there if we want but tend to do that here and it has sections for recipes, hints and tips favourite sellers etc, we can all go on there and add recipes so they don't get lost on here in all the chat and the info is all there when anyone needs it. The Name UK Bakers clan name actually came from this picture that Gray drew of us all a while back

ASugarluva I've alwYs made it in an 8 inch cos I haven't got a 9. In the 8 it's probably three inches tall plus dome.

My bake even strips are homemade, my mam made them from an old towel, someone on here gave me that idea, can't remember who and it works really well.

Cinderella cake? Must've missed that, can't wait to see it tho Lynne. And the kittens cake Siany.

Lovely bake drop tiddy, I love their name. :-)

Roxy if you change your mind give me a shout or PM me. It's no good to me and I'd rather somebody else get some use out of it.

I'm a but snowed under with this flippin castle but I've been playing with a new pan this evening and I love it so wanted to share with you! Asda are selling a shallow veg roasting tray for Xmas, it's about 14" by 10" with good strong rolled edges, an 8oz Victoria sponge recipe bakes a good layer with no Contortioning in the oven and takes 25 mins so in an hour I have 4 10x14" layers made! Great for carving something big :-)
