AAw thanks petitecat, I didn't like it when I first did it as think it should of been a taller bit on the top. Still that was nothing compared to the squares on the rubbix cube and the sticky uneven mess it was!!

AJo, and by the way the ribbon is just perfect! I have never made one! Nothing sticky looking about the cube at all so whatever you did has worked. Fab job on both cakes!

AThanks for the tips Siany01 and Spireite - I'll check out Delia!

Petitecat I suppose as I've done a few lemon cakes it didn't think the poppyseed element would make too much difference - but you've def made me aware for the future to think carefully if there are any random flavour options - I suppose I can always say to the customer they're the first to request x flavour and I'd be happier trying it out before I agreed! I did that when I was asked for my first gluten free cake. Thanks for making me think tho!

AI have a question tho - I use one of Zoe Clark's recipe books a lot and she always says to cut the crusts off a cake - do people generally do this? I always thought that if the cake had enough of a crust on it that you'd want to cut it off then you'd over baked it! Would be interested to see what people think!

AMiapie, I used to offer to make untried recipes before, but the veterans on this thread convinced me otherwise! You just never know how people will react to a cake that doesn't quite meet their expectations! Do let us know how you get on with the Delia recipe :)

I'm looking for a new recipe for a choc cake suitable for carving. going to tryout Jane Hornby's wedding choc cake. I'm hoping its not crumbly like my mudcake, crumbs everywhere!

Must sign off now, night night cakers!

AHi everyone,

I haven't gone on my holidays yet Jo (15th November!) , just been so busy I haven't had time to come on here much. Your cakes are lovely, nothing wrong with that bow.

Welcome back Kelsey, hope Rome was amazing. Looking forward to pics.

Hope your Halloween cake is going OK tiddy... And your naughty castle. That was the way I was going to make the turrets (the pic Kelsey posted) when I got asked for the castle cake. I bet it'll look great when it's done.

What else have a missed...

Oh welcome Miapie (my phone really doesn't want to spell your name btw).

Ok I promise to try and keep up again now. Night all x

AThank you for all the birthday wishes ladies, I've had loads of lovely pressies and just been out for a beautiful Italian. I'm stuffed and ready for bed - last week of work then it's half term yeah.

Love the cakes Jo they're fabulous as always. How do you get your lettering to look so good, do you use just normal sugar paste, I have the funky tappits but really struggle using mine they're so frustrating.

Hi Jo!  I love your cakes too.  Bows elude me and I love yours.  I love the 40 cake - a really great concept, lovely.

Re the lemon and poppyseed - I bought poppyseeds for some cupcakes but they were for a work "thing" and I didn't know how they would taste so decided against.Good to know about the milk tip Sian.  So I guess I'm with the "don't do it unless you know what it tastes like" camp.  I can, on the other hand vouch for lemon and ginger.  They went down a storm.  Just some small chopped pieces of crystallised ginger running through the sponge and a mascarpone topping with some more ginger and lemon zest.

Sugarluva - will you be in the States for Black Friday????   Can't think when it is - but if you are - you lucky thing!  I was there last year for a minor "black" Friday in September and the prices were amazing.  We bought loads of Ralph Lauren tops and shorts for under £100.  You're going to NY?  Are you going to Woodberry?  I'm afraid I love shopping over there and even though I love to sightsee, I love to shop in equal measure!

Tiddy - can't wait to see your cake.  Did you see that golf bag on the PB site the other day........??  Looked rather like yours!

Morning cakey folks!

Tiddy, very excited to see the epic cake!

Loubee, I have tapppits and I used to struggle as well! I always use gumpaste rather than just plain SP. I roll to the appropriate thinness, press the tappit onto the gumpaste, lift then 'clean' the tappit of the unwanted gumpaste, rub my finger on the edges of the tappit letter so that it doesnt have rough edges when it comes out, then leave it while I work on the next two tappit letters. This way, the gumpaste hardens a bit while in the tappit and it's easier to tap out. I then 'tap' it out. I think another way is to leave the gumpaste to harden a bit after rolling, then press the tappits on and tap out straight away.

There are plenty of youtube videos on this as well which might be worth a look :)

Jane Hornby's recipe is the one I use all the time. It cuts beautifully. You do get a crust on the top though (I think it's the high sugar ratio) so I usually scale the recipe up a bit to get the depth I need after trimming.

Thanks for the advice! Oh good. Not a lot of crumbs then? What's the taste like? It got raves on bbcgoodfood! I'm hoping it's like Paul Bradford's choc cake- I watched him carve it and it's fantastic- hardly any mess and it's supposed to be quite tasty. People have had problems with baking it though so I thought I'd try Jane's first.

AJo , loved both cakes but esp the 80's theme. Glad you had a good birthday Loubee. Welcome Miapie, good to have you here. How about a sneak peek, of "work in progress" Tiddy? Start dropping big hints for a new tablet for the upcoming birthday Barbara. Isn't there a new iPad out so maybe there are some second hand ones around? I had my "play day" yesterday. I didn't get as much done as I wanted but at least got the centre for my next David Austin rose done to drying stage. Has anyone made Lisianthus? Also delved through all my impression mats to see if I had anything suitable for the silver skull I posted the pic to the other night.

Just been on the news that Linda Bellingham died yesterday. So sad. She had already decided no further treatment but wanted to have Christmas with her family.

Taste is gorgeous. Very rich, dark and chocolatey. I did it for one of the tiers on my nephew's wedding cake and the chef at the venue sent out his complements on how it had turned out and cut.

I think we miss black Friday. Am I right in thinking it's the Friday after Thanksgiving? We leave just before Thanksgiving unfortunately so I'll miss all that as well. I'll be in Iceland by then Hehe.

I am looking forward to doing a bit of shopping though, probably more on the hunt for baking stuff I can't get over here more than anything else!

Looking forward to seeing your cakes Tiddy, hurry up with pics!

AMorning all. :-)

So much to catch up on, I don't know where to start!

First of all, apologies to roxy, I think I called your mams dog a cat! In my defence I was demented with toothache tho. It's still bad but not half as bad as it was, thanks to everyone who was asking. :-)

Hope everyone who was poorly and their kids are better now. How's your mam Lynne? My mam was asking after her yesterday.

M4rvel your medal cake was beautiful. I really felt for you when you were having problems and so disappointed...... Until I saw it! It's lovely! I know what you mean tho, if it was giving you a lot of trouble and not going how you want it to you'll never be happy with it. I can only echo what everyone else said, the recipient would never be able to buy something like that off a shelf, it's unique and personal and I bet they were delighted.

Lmao at Kathy (I think) being careful with her grammar cos there's a teacher about! :-D

Wow jo your eighties cake is wicked! I can imagine the Rubik's cube gave you trouble but it turned out really well. My favourite bit is the tape and I love the way you've put twister on the board. That's probably my favourite cake of yours now, I love it. I've got a huge soft spot for all things eighties, I grew up in the eighties, bad clothes (rara skirts, skin tight bleached jeans, shoulder pads and bat wings!), bad hair (mullets for the boys, perms for the girls, banana clips and half a tin of hairspray!), atari's, Walkmans, neighbours, blimey, I'm getting all nostalgic now. Who else used to tape the charts on a Sunday, poised with your finger over the pause button to press it right at the end of the song before the dj started talking?!

I know I've missed stuff but my minds gone blank a minute so I'll go and have another look.

Oh, who asked about partyanimalonline? I use them all the time, good prices, quick delivery. :-)

:-D Thanks Maisie - and everyone who wished me well....positive thinking does help!  I've just got home and I am so pleased to tell you that  I have been told it's all been "got" - yayyy!  I just can't explain the relief.  As somebody said - it's the 'not knowing' if it had been removed successfully that is probably worse than that initial shock of being told the "c" word.   I've got to go to work in a few minutes but I feel like I want to shout to everyone!!!   I also heard the news about Lynda Bellingham before I left for the hospital - made me feel very sad.

You are right Maisie - I am a grammar freak - and I realised what I had done in my reply to teacher!  Lol.  Don't want you all thinking I let my standards slip when I'm on here!

Oh Tiddy that's great news about the balls!  I'm planning a halloween cake.........and I'm gonna use my airbrush for the first time!!  If I make a pig's ear of it you won't know about it (because you will all  have forgotten!  Lol) but if it turns out reasonable, I'll post some pics.

Lynne - I am going to check out that recipe - hopefully can find it on line.

Well, I'm off to work now and will check back with y'all later!

Have a lovely Monday everyone!

AMorning!

Hello Siany and Kelsey  Where's your photos Kelsey?

M4rvel, I thought your cake was really nice, and everyone is right, the overall image is what people see. I really disliked the windsurfing cake I did a few weeks ago but the recipient just saw the good stuff. I did lol at your 'jolly good bo**ocking' though - how posh are you when you swear?!

Maisie, glad your tooth is a bit better. Have you made an appointment to see anyone yet?

Roxy, that's great news about your mum's dog. Well, it's better news than renal failure anyway, so yay!

Tiddy, has your hubby stopped giggling at his little joke yet? :-D I keep finding mine reading the thread. It does make me laugh.

When are you off Sugar? Sooo jealous!

Cakes are all looking fab - Jo, love the 80's theme :-)

I've got a fun day of quotes (hopefully I'll be cleared to work again soon!), cleaning, and a bit of decorating (the room kind, not cakes). I do need to re-do my dummy cakes again at some point though, as our utility room (the one we had specifically built to store dummies safely as they were getting ruined in the loft) is damp, and they've all melted. To channel M4rvel, I'm jolly pi**ed. This is especially irritating as I had the offer of a free stand at a wedding fair yesterday which I had to turn down. Not only did I not have any dummies, but I can't bake for people at the moment so I'd have just been there with leaflets saying to people 'no I am good, honest' :/

Hello all again

Kathy, I'm so relieved for you! What a weight off your shoulders! I'm a grammar freak too, although I know I get it wrong when I'm speaking and sometimes even when writing. I can't speak english as well as I write it (can't correct my tongue!!). I once corrected one of my daughter's english papers. I was appalled that her standard had slipped so much- I made so many corrections. I was also a bit surprised that she used the phrase 'would of'. I thought, what on earth is she thinking? It turns out I had corrected her friend's paper, which she happened to have on her desk... whoops. We printed out a new copy of the paper, exactly as it was written and I asked my daughter not to tell her friend what I'd done :O
