AHmm, I wonder if I could get away with doing a couple with some cheapy paste. I want to build my portfolio. I suppose on a couple I could reuse the base iced cake and just change the decor, as in do one side and then turn it and use the otherside, for pics only the front needs to look good doesn't it.

I do recall you saying you get wholesale. How do you go about getting that if you don't mind my asking?

yep you could do that! but add gum trag lol

If you are a registered business you can then get wholesale prices with most places. I have a bookers cash and carry local and also get trade prices at culpitt and a few others :-D

AOh ok, thanks. I will be registered next week hopefully, it says 5 working days but we are over that now :/

Yeah, I will add gum trag. I want to have a play with gelatin bubbles and I want to do some other things but don't want to have a ton of cake to eat.

AHi Newstreet, great news for your family. Hope after a few days you might be able to relax a little and sleep normally.

I've spent the day making a birthday cake for a friend, not decorated just choc overload with cigarillos. Same recipe as you Newstreet, always works perfectly, just have to adjust timings.

Then working on nappy (diaper) cake and thought I would try the Lindy Smith recipe as it has to be carved. I made an 11" square and it isn't deep enough for a bag so will have to do another cake tomorrow. Luckily this is just for a friend so no deadline but thought I should mention depths.

AHi Newstreet, m

Original message sent by petitecat

I don't subscribe to P Bradford, money is too tight at the moment but would love too.

Er actually I thought it would be a Ferrari car, not a formula 1 ferrari car! Yes I've been mulling sizes. The £27 is for a 7x11" cake so not a big cake at all. So do you think if this was a ferrari enzo (just in case that is what they want), this is still too small?

The £27 is for the following: cake, SMBC, ganache for the cover, SP, board, cake card, box + shipping, gas and elec, ribbon, adding edible image brings it up to £31.00  Do you think I left anything else out? How much do you charge for gas and elec?

I'll work out a price for a bigger cake using my 9x13 pan, from the charts I've seen that's supposed to feed 20 comfortably.

I think you will be surprised (I was) at how much cake is left after carving. I add on about £8 for sundries including electricity - no idea of this covers but my cake was in for over 2 hrs today! I would just offer a simplified version. A 6 yr old will just look at the initial impact.

Yes, it was definitely 'scented' she said.

However, it wasn't a genuine enquiry...  it was an acquaintance saying "how much would YOU charge for this cake?" - as in, she's at a wedding and couldn't believe the price!  I didn't realise that at first though.

I gave her a 'ball park' figure.

When she told me what the groom's mother paid for the cake, I nearly fainted.  EXACTLY four times what I quoted (and I wasn't being cheap because I know her!!)

Oh how the other half live!!!

ABlimey, that was hard! I'm really pleased with it, I know where the mistakes are and I'm worried about the wet SP at the back but as long as it's intact in the morning I'm really pleased. I shall never make one again.

Thankyou all so much for your help (here and on the UK clan) and sorry if I've done your heads in (I've done my own head with it too!).

G'nite everyone. :-)

ABtw I did see the air bubble but only after I'd taken the photo and put my phone on charge upstairs. I popped it but I'm too tired to go all the way back down to take another photo so I'll take one in the morning. Night night. :-)

Good morning all.

Wow Maisie, your cake's turned out fabulous. Those pebbles look so real...

Siany, you could try covering your dummies with cling film so that you can use up the excess on cakes. You'd have to cover it pretty tightly though, because when I tried it the cling film was loose and it was a nightmare. Otherwise any leftover SP can just be used for other dummies.

AMaisie your cake is flipping awesome!!! You should be so proud of yourself.

Petitecat I'm nor so bothered about using it on cakes but if I could re use it on other dummies so I could get a few out of it I would be ok with that.

Catsmum, do you wrap the edges of the tin. The recipe called for that and I wasn't too sure what they mean!!

AMorning all. :-)

Thanks Jean. Nanny, Siany and newstreet. :-D Yes I am pleased with it tbh. It's not an exact replica of any chest I've seen but I like it. I had more decorations but I didn't want it to look to cluttered and detract from the eggs. It's still in one piece this morning but the back piece of SP is still soaking wet. The other three have pretty much dried out so I don't know what happened to the back piece. Never seen anything like it.

Newstreet it probably means bake even strips or even newspaper (my fruitcake recipe says to tie newspaper round the tin). I used a cut up tea towel, soaked in cold water and tied around the tin for this cake because it was so big. Somebody here, can't remember who, told me to do it. Worked too, it wasn't over cooked on the edges at all and it was a 15x11 tin.

AJust wanted to show you what I meant about the SP. The bottom bit is the first piece that went on, the top bit is the overlap from the piece I put on to cover the edge that's visible from the front. Ignore the curved edge, I couldn't trim it without pulling the underneath SP off. Leaving it like that was the lesser of two evils. Sorry to keep on about it but I'm hoping someone knows what's happened. If I don't know what's happened I can't prevent it next time.

Wow - Maisie I've just seen your cake - it's brilliant!!  I love it and I don't even know what it is!  You so should go do this all the time.....

Jo - what a lovely couple you look - beautiful.

Now playing Russian roulette with my washing.....should I hang it out....should I put it in the dryer....is it gonna rain while I'm at the Asda....???  So many questions and so many young people still in their beds who could take care of this for me!:x  (Methinks a noisy stint at the dishwasher is called for).

Morning everyone, have been reading for about twenty minutes now to catch up. From what I can remember,

Newstreet brilliant news about your daughter I'm so pleased for you and the family.

Relznik beautiful cake glad it all worked out in the end.

Victoria beautiful painting I have watched that done by Stephanie Weightman but have yet to try it, she makes it look easy but I don't think I could do something as lovely as yours. I have her book on reserve at the library but I am still waiting for it.

Nanny her is the site that sells the Stephanie Weightman painting pages and dvd to learn the painting, I actually have the spring pages but haven't tried yet, they are practice pages that you paint over and then clean and use again, like when you were in school and had to go over the letters to learn how to write them.

http://www.cakecrafting.co.uk/section.php/94/1/stephanies_painting_pages

She also has a book available on amazon or you could try the library

Maisie Wow your chest cake is amazing you should be really chuffed with that that, the eggs look fab, and you said you couldn't do it, well done you.;-D

Sorry to anyone I've missed it's not you my fault you lot chat to much

No nanny another thing on my never ending things to learn list, I actually got the painting pages free with an order from her site, I think I have the spring ones and I think I got the christmas snowman ones for £3 with another order. I seriously need to stop buying stuff and go through what I have and use it.
