I'm doing a cake for my co-worker's 30th birthday. His favorite movie is The Karate Kid (LOL!) and I thought it would tie in nicely with the sort of "80's Kid" theme of his birthday.

Problem is...I've never seen the movie myself!

Other than trying to recreate Ralph Macicio, I'm not sure what to!

I'm a newbie caker but have basic buttercream and fondant skills. Something sculpted might be out of my league, though I'm willing to give anything a shot. Even an ugly cake can taste good, right?

TIA!

Ooo! How fun! Well, the first two things that spring to mind are the famous "crane" pose, and the tree design that Daniel-san wears in the tournament at the end. Either could be done fairly easily as a frozen buttercream transfer, I think.

Here are some pics I pulled off the net quickly:

Have fun and good luck!

You could do a 3d figure of Daniel doing the "crane" pose & maybe hold it onto the cake w/ a toothpick (since he's standing on 1 foot). Cute idea! icon_razz.gif

Thanks for the ideas. I'll make sure to post pics next week!

I like the idea of the bonzi tree on top (out of fondant/gumpaste maybe) and then maybe as a border around the base/middle of the cake you could use a black belt?

Try a Google Image search, lots of Karate Kid there. Thats where I usually start looking for ideas.

Here's a link to a t shirt that might work for your cake. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://media.80stees.com/images/products/Karate_Kid-Sun-T.jpg&imgrefurl=https://www.80stees.com/products/Vintage-Karate-Kid-T-shirt.asp&usg=__S5clfGC28GKhIiUVhmfYsO7AoFQ=&h=391&w=500&sz=14&hl=en&start=30&tbnid=mhtkWo9OZfUV-M:&tbnh=102&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3DKarate%2BKid%26start%3D20%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D20%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

There is a great poster that I would use for an edible image if I were making that particular cake.

Good luck, sounds like a fun project.

I think it would be cool to incorporate different parts of the movie on the cake. For example, you could have the Bonzai tree, have a little fly with chopsticks next to it (becaue he learned to catch a fly with them), and maybe have a part of a privacy fence with a little paintbrush next to it (his teacher made him paint his fence to learn fighting technique). I don't know, just some ideas.... Good Luck!!!
