How Do They Do That?

I've recently seen wedding cake cookies with the bride and groom names and the date of the wedding printed on each one.
I've been trying to figure out how they do that and so perfectly.

I do use frosting sheets to print photos and stuff so i would know how to tell for that but it didn't look like it.

It looked like it was stamped on but there doesn't seem to be anything out there that gives the ability to interchange letters and fonts for each specific occasion.

I've been asking and searching and emailing.... but no one seems to know how it's done without printing onto frosting sheets. Can someone help?

I have been wondering the same thing myself. Maybe somebody can link us to that topic.

There have been a few threads about this, try and search for Sweet Art

This is the companies website though

www.sweetart.com/jetspecs.html

It's a great machine, but the colors aren't very vivid, red in particular

Thank you so much but i still don't think that that is what was used. If you can see in the pics, it was put onto different shapes of cookies including the purse and wedding cake cookie. There's gotta be some stamping going on here.

luv2bake....there is no edible paper involved in the Sweet Art machine, it is like stamping. This would be great for someone specializing in edible products, but I think most of us will have to stick to edible images.

I understand there is no paper and thank you for responding.
I took a look at the video demo they provide and it's pretty similar to using frosting sheet except it prints directly on the cookie.
BUT, i don't see how something like that can print onto odd shaped cookies like the purse or wedding cake.

Hmm, good question. There must be some sort of set-up. Give them a quick email and let us know what you find out. It looks like a neat system to have.

You could try to use a stencil......by making your own with the scrapbook hole punchers. Place it over your cookie and brush on your color just like painting a stencil on anything else. I don't think there will be many font choices but you will have the exact same print on each cookie. Good luck!

Hi
I was going to suggest a stencil also. If you look at my photos the cookie with "its a girl" and "Happy Birthday" are done with a stencil. It would probably look better if you stencil in solid and with a dark color like black to get the stamped effect. These stencil I bought ready but I also cut my own. I will try to cut one on my cricut personalized tonight and get back to you to see if it works. Also could it be an edible image?
Anyway, I would like to know also cause I am going to make so wedding cake cookies for a friend in August and would like to personalize them also. I was going to use an edible marker but this would be alot easier.

I started that original thread as I saw those exact same cookies and loved the idea. Taniabanana is right - that is done with a SweetArt machine. You can put any size/shape cookie under the inkjet and it will work. You just have to make a template to set under it so that you know exactly where the ink will end up. This is a cool machine. Out of my price range, but so cool!

Interesting to hear about the colors not being vivid. Glad Taniabanana brought that up! That's not good to hear that for that amount of money. icon_sad.gif

amifsud, i you can let me know how you make your own stencils, i'm interested to hear. To order custom stencil for each order received is just ridiculous.
No, they're definately not edible images as i already work with them and would know how to recognize it.
Thanks you all. I guess it's not doable unless willing to spend a fortune. How much is the sweetart, by the way?

Hi Luv2bake6,
I came home and cut a couple of names with my cricut. They came out good, the only problem is that 1/4 inch is the smallest it cuts, which is ok it still fits on the bottom of a 3 tier cake cookie cutter, and when it cuts for instance the "a" it cuts the middle out so I would have to probably cut it as a double stencil to fill that area in. When I do my own stencils I just use mylar and an exacto knife, these would be very complicated to cut cause they are so small. I will take a photo of the stencil I cut with the cricut and try to attach it. Sorry the picture is not too clear but I could not get the glare out. Under the stencil is where i used the ready made stencil with black food color. hope this helps. I could not get it to attach if you want to email me your address and I wil sent the pic.

Yeah, the colours are a bit of a pain, they tell me it's to do with the colors allowed by FDA, but that doesn't make sense when i can get a bright red from Americolor gels! It does use just 1 color cartridge and one black unlike my canon which uses three seperate colors and black which probably makes a big difference.
TracyLH is right too about setting up the templates, you can also print on cakes as the print arm lifts to different hights. It can sometimes be very frustrating getting the template right, but once it's set, it's fine.
I have one, so feel free to pm me if you need any further info icon_smile.gif

Taniabanana - I have been waffling back and forth and back and forth about trying to find one used. If I ever get more serious, I may well tap you with a few questions. A few for now though - is the black a nice deep black? That is likely the color I would use the most. How well does it work if you don't use it every week? Thanks So much for your help!

Amisfud - Thanks for the stencil ideas! I can't find the "It's a girl" or "Happy Birthday" cookies in your profile, so I must be blind! I'll try again later after I have had some caffeine. icon_lol.gif

Well I'm just going to jump right in here and ask a similar question -- how do they do these cookies? Is it rice paper or what computer program did they use? http://www.manhattanfruitier.com/scripts/WebObjects.dll/Manhattan.woa/wa/NavigationAction/displayProduct?name=Academy%20Awards%20Cookies&aff=29E2E&utm_source=delivra&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2009+-+Oscar+Cookies

No Problem TracyLH, happy to help. The black is pretty deep, especially on a white background. You do have to make sure the arm is at the right hight or the image maybe a little fuzzy. I bought mine as a reconditioned unit I think it was about $1,000 cheaper. I don't use it every week, I just take the cartridges out and store them in an airtight container while not in use. I clean the heads etc with vodka before every use which helps with the colors. I have even printed directly onto an uniced cookie and it worked pretty good.

Amisfud - Good Grief! I saw those - I even had left a comment on them! icon_redface.gif I was looking for two different thumbnails. Thanks for pointing it out! icon_redface.gif (BTW - again... great cookies!)

Taniabanana - Excellent info! Thanks SO very much! This is excellent info should I ever find a used one and decide to bite the bullet.

Do you have a separate computer just set up for this like they show on the site or do you just use your home computer? I am trying to see just how much infrastructure this bad boy needs. Thanks again!

Do you have to use their software? I have the software from kopykake that i use to print on frosting sheets. Would that suffice?

Kopykake software should be fine for the images, but you have to have their software and drivers to actually get your pc to talk to the printer

Just to show what it can do, these cookies were printed directly on the white icing. (The heart on the T shirt was hand iced)

WOW. I love cake central - finally I have an answer to my question. I have been researching and trying to find out how these cookies were made and no one seemed to know. Spooky, but I was just thinking about posing this question on cake central, and opened up this thread and the question was there......twilight zone! LOL. I am so thrilled that I know now how these cookies get printed....
